Abstract

The article discusses a study which undertook an examination of two formes brèves narratives françaises, the sixteenth century nouvelle, as observed in Marguerite de Navarre's "Heptaméron and the modern poème en prose, as recorded in Charles Baudelaire's "Spleen de Paris." It attempts to address several questions, such as the types of characteristics the storytelling forms share and in what respect do they differ. The article also describes how failed human relationship summarizes Baudelaire's poem.

Abstract

The article presents the book "The Skin of Dreams," by Raymond Queneau, translated from the French by H.J. Kaplan. In his concern with violence and disorder Queneau shares same of the central preoccupations of those who have been admired in Paris, France. Argot and inflated diction are regularly juxtaposed for comic effect. "The Skin of Dreams" is wonderfully fresh, for Queneau writes to one simple end, the ironic and comic portrayal of a world bankrupt in actuality and in dream. This book has a unity and intensity not usually present in the English novella, but in the great tradition of the French nouvelle.
