Introduction: Denial of pregnancy remains a phenomenon little known to healthcare professionals. Yet its repercussions are far from negligible. The aim of this study was to assess whether denial of pregnancy has an impact on the infant's development., Patients and Method: This prospective study included 51 full-term infants born in Nancy Regional Maternity Hospital between 1 January 2009 and 30 June 2015. In this study, the development of the children was followed longitudinally. We collected data during the neonatal period, at 9months, and at 2years of age from the infants' file and standardized medical certificates, and current data through a telephone questionnaire. Three fundamental aspects of the infants' development were analyzed: height and weight growth, psychomotor development, and the existence of pathologies. Given that this was a preliminary study aiming at exploring facts, no statistical tests were carried out., Results: The rate of denial of pregnancy was one birth in 300 during the study period. These infants showed proportional intrauterine growth restriction, which leveled out later, with their height and weight growth normal by month 9. The full-term perinatal mortality rate was 5%. The infants showed no sign of increased morbidity; 20% of them presented with delayed psychomotor development at 9months of age, with an increased impact as they grew older. The rate reached 30% after 24months, half of which were language disorders., Conclusion: The results of this preliminary study point out the need for thorough monitoring of these infants throughout infancy., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Masson SAS. Introduction: By the end of 2011, 275,000 children in France were included in the Aide sociale à l'enfance (ASE, Child Welfare System). Half of these children were entrusted to public care. There is limited data on these children. The MDPH (Maison départementale des personnes handicapées) is an administrative body assisting in the care of disabled children, through material, financial, and human means. Analyzing MDPH medical records can provide medical information about these children. The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics of children left to the ASE with a record at MDPH in Bouches-du-Rhône., Methods: We extracted administrative data from two registers, the ASE register and the MDPH register. The MDPH medical files of each patient were analyzed and their medical information was coded: gestational age, deficiencies, and pathologies., Results: In Bouches-du-Rhône, 2965 children were entrusted, 506 (17%) of whom were known by the MDPH: 30.6% of the entrusted children known by MDPH were taken into foster care and 48% were in residential group homes. Half of the MDPH notifications concerned a referral to a school or medico-social institution. By analyzing the medical data, we observed an average of 2.1 deficiencies per child. The types of deficiencies were distributed as follows: 35.9% were psychological deficiencies, 26.4% were speech deficiencies, and 21.6% were intellectual cognitive deficiencies. The most common pathology was mental and behavioral disorder (71% of diagnoses)., Discussion: The MDPH notification rate in children entrusted to public care was seven times higher than in the general population. Overall, explaining the relation between child abuse and neglect and disability is difficult. The psychopathology of these children is complex. Background: Studies conducted on mild intellectual disability (MID) in children are infrequent and the prevalence rates vary widely. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of MID in children in a French county (Isère), to describe the clinical signs and associated comorbidities, and to specify the aetiologies of this disability., Methods: The target population was comprised of the 15 100 children born in 1997 residing in Isère County, France, in 2008. Our goal was to find the children in this group with MID diagnosed between 9 and 13 years of age. MID was defined as an overall IQ score of between 50 and 69 [International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision (ICD-10)]; this definition was adjusted for the study by integrating confidence intervals so that the risk of IQ measurement relativity and possible discrepancy of scores could be taken into account. Children were identified through an administrative data source designed to assist disabled persons that contains health information, and an educational data source. Parents who agreed to let their children participate responded to an in-depth questionnaire on their child's medical and academic history. A genetic investigation was proposed for those children whose MID had an unknown aetiology., Results: The preliminary selection included 267 children, resulting in a prevalence rate of 18 per 1000 (CI [15.6; 19.9]), within the expected mean. Of these 267 cases, 181 families agreed to participate in the study (68%). MID more often affected boys [male gender ratio = 1.4 (CI [1.2; 1.6])], low socioeconomic groups, and families with a history of intellectual disability. The clinical signs and comorbidities associated with MID were very frequent, with 54% spoken language disorders and 10% pervasive developmental disorder. Only 9% of the children had undergone a genetic investigation before the study. The known aetiology rate for MID was 19% among all the children who had had genetic tests performed., Conclusion: MID is an important public health issue based on its prevalence. The associated clinical signs and comorbidities may be warning signs of MID in case of learning difficulties. Purpose: The hypothesis that the linguistic deficit presented by children with specific language impairment (SLI) is caused by limited cognitive resources (e.g., S. Ellis Weismer & L. Hesketh, 1996) was tested against the hypothesis of a limitation in linguistic knowledge (e.g., M. L. Rice, K. Wexler, & P. Cleave, 1995)., Method: The study examined the influence of the argument-structure complexity of a target sentence on the production of grammatical morphemes in French children with SLI compared with younger children matched for grammatical level in production (GL) and children of the same chronological age (CA). A sentence production task was used where the target sentences varied in terms of argument complexity and length., Results: The results indicated that children with SLI used articles and auxiliaries in obligatory contexts significantly less often than both the GL and CA control groups: More complex argument structures elicited the highest number of grammatical morpheme omissions; this effect was larger in children with SLI than in the GL group and was independent of the length of the sentences, which failed to show any influence on the production of grammatical morphemes., Conclusion: These results support the hypothesis that grammatical-morpheme deficit in SLI depends at least in part on limited processing capacities.

Background: Early detection of specific language impairment and dyslexia in children is an important public health problem. Longitudinal studies are needed for the distinction of real impairments from simple transitory delays., Methods: Teachers filled a 29-item questionnaire on language and behavior for 695 children aged 3.5 years. Four years later (at second grade of primary school) the same children were evaluated for reading and writing. Statistical analysis focused on the relationships between teacher's early observations and reading delay 4 years later. Associated factors were age, sex, educational level and bilinguism of the parents, and area of the school., Results: The delay in written language acquisition (8.5% of the children) was significantly associated with low educational level (but not bilinguism) of the parents and to the area of the school. In univariate analysis, most of the teacher's early negative assessments were significantly related to reading/writing delay, with the exception of some behavioral problems. However, when the effect of associated factors was taken into account only a few items, mainly concerning language expression, remained significantly associated with later reading/writing delay., Conclusion: These data show a major role of associated factors (educational level of the parents, area of the school) in reading delay, and help to select specific teacher's observations for an early prediction of this delay.

The aim of this study was to identify risk factors for self-injurious behaviours (SIBs) in children with autistic disorders. The occurrence of SIB was examined in comparison with the following variables: chronological age, sex, adaptive skills, speech level, associated medical condition, degree of autism and parental social class. The subjects were 222 children aged under 7 years and all of them fulfilled the ICD-10 criteria for infantile autism. Retrospective data were collected on demographic characteristics and medical condition. Children were assessed in terms of speech, degree of autism and adaptive skills in communication, socialization and daily living skills domains. Results indicated that 50% of the children experienced SIB and 14.6% had severe SIBs. Lower chronological age, associated perinatal condition, a higher degree of autism and a higher daily living skills delay were risk factors of SIBs but parental class, sex and epilepsy were not.
