• Thirty-one pesticide residues were analyzed in 180 agricultural topsoils and 155 earthworms. • The soils (100 %) and earthworms (92 %) contained at least one pesticide. • Both treated fields and nontreated seminatural habitats were contaminated. • A greater number and higher concentrations of pesticides were found in treated areas. • The initial predicted environmental concentrations in soils were exceeded in 22 % of the soils. • A high risk of pesticide mixtures to earthworms was predicted in 46 % of cases. Critical knowledge gaps about environmental fate and unintentional effects of currently used pesticides (CUPs) hamper the understanding and mitigation of their global impacts on ecological processes. We investigated the exposure of earthworms to 31 multiclass CUPs in an arable landscape in France. We highlighted the presence of at least one pesticide in all soils (n = 180) and 92 % of earthworms (n = 155) both in treated crops and nontreated habitats (hedgerows, grasslands, and cereals under organic farming). Mixtures of at least one insecticide, one herbicide, and one fungicide (> limit of quantification) contaminated 90 % of soils and 54 % of earthworms at levels that could endanger these nontarget beneficial soil organisms. A high risk of chronic toxicity to earthworms was found (46 % of samples) both in treated winter cereals and nontreated habitats considered as refuges. This may alter biodiversity, hinder recovery, and impair ecosystem functions. These results provide essential insights for sustainable agriculture and CUP regulation, and highlight the potential of pesticides as agents of global change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To establish national reference levels (RLs) in interventional procedures under CT guidance as required by the 2013/59/Euratom European Directive., Methods: Seventeen categories of interventional procedures in thoracic, abdominopelvic, and osteoarticular specialties (percutaneous infiltration, vertebroplasty, biopsy, drainage, tumor destruction) were analyzed. Total dose length product (DLP), number of helical acquisitions (NH), and total DLP for helical, sequential, or fluoroscopic acquisitions were recorded for 10 to 20 patients per procedure at each center. RLs were calculated as the 3rd quartiles of the distributions and target values for optimization process (TVOs) as the median. RLs and TVOs were compared with previously published studies., Results: Results on 5001 procedures from 49 centers confirmed the great variability in patient dose for the same category of procedures. RLs were proposed for the DLPs and NHs in the seventeen categories. RLs in terms of DLP and NH were 375 mGy.cm and 2 NH for spinal or peri-spinal infiltration, 1630 mGy.cm and 3 NH for vertebroplasty, 845 mGy.cm and 4 NH for biopsy, 1950 mGy.cm and 8 NH for destruction of tumors, and 1090 mGy.cm and 5 NH for drainage. DLP and NH increased with the complexity of procedures., Conclusions: This study was the first nationwide multicentric survey to propose RLs for interventional procedures under CT guidance. Heterogeneity of practice in centers were found with different levels of patient doses for the same procedure. One of the most adopted solutions in developed countries to manage stormwater is detention/retention basins which generate large quantities of sediments that have to be removed regularly. In order to manage them properly, accurate data are needed about their physical and chemical characteristics, particularly on micropollutant concentrations and their associated risk. This work consisted in a two-year sampling of dry sediments from a detention-settling basin. Priority substances, including pesticides, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), alkylphenols and bisphenol A (BPA), were monitored. Different sites in the basin bottom were sampled in order to investigate spatial distribution of the contamination. Results show that the increase of the sediment thickness in the basin was heterogeneous with a maximum of 15 cm after two years. Pesticides and PBDE were, if detected, mainly found in low concentrations from 2 ng/g to 286 ng/g. Conversely, alkylphenols and bisphenol A were always quantified at concentrations varying from 6 ng/g to 3400 ng/g. These high levels suggest that these sediments should be managed with precautions. Spatial heterogeneity of alkylphenol ethoxylates and BPA concentrations was observed, with higher contamination of alkylphenol ethoxylates in anaerobic zones and BPA levels correlated with total organic carbon and in a lesser extent to fine particles., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Image-guided radiation therapy consists in acquiring in-room images to improve patient and mainly tumour set up accuracy. Many devices based on ionising or non-ionising radiations were designed in recent years. The use of such devices is of major importance in the management of patient radiotherapy courses. Those imaging sessions require to clearly define procedures in each radiotherapy department (image modality, acquisition frequency, corrective action, staff training and tasks). A quick review of the different existing image-guided radiation therapy devices is presented. In addition, the results of a French national survey about image-guided radiation therapy are presented: the survey is about both equipment and procedures. A total of 57 radiotherapy departments have participated, representing more than 160 treatment devices. About three linear accelerators out of four are equipped with an image-guiding device. The most common equipment is the CBCT system. Most centres have set up training sessions for the technicians to allow them to analyse online daily images. The management of in-room imaging dose is still under investigation, but many centres use an accounting scheme. While the devices are used to adjust the positioning of patients, in more than half of the centres, the practice had an impact on the choice of clinical and planning target volume margins. Objectives: Rhinoviruses are the most common aetiological agents of colds, but the frequency and the severity of other locations of the infection are not well known. This study describes the clinical aspects and the severity of rhinovirus infections in hospitalised children., Methods: Isolation in culture and a RT-PCR were performed for the detection of rhinovirus in nasal aspirates from hospitalised children from September 1998 to October 2000. A group of 211 children found to be positive for rhinovirus was studied., Results: Rhinovirus-infected children suffered from the following clinical syndromes: 60 (28.4%) upper airway infections, 81 (38.4%) bronchiolitis, 25 (11.9%) pneumonias and 12 (4.7%) acute attacks of asthma. Clinical symptoms were wheezing (32%), ronchi (37%) and 29% of children presented with acute distress respiratory syndrome; 40% of the available chest X-Ray were abnormal. Eight children were hospitalised in the intensive care unit and two children died. Twenty-five children (10.9%) had a nosocomial infection; a dual infection was observed in 19 cases (9%) with the following viruses: RSV (3), influenza (2) parainfluenza (8), adenovirus (2), enterovirus (4); 19 (9%) children had a secondary bacterial infection. Rhinoviruses were detected in nasal aspirates in 112 cases (53%) according to the culture and in the rhinovirus culture-negative samples in 99 cases (47%) according to the RT-PCR assay., Conclusion: After eliminating cases of bacterial or viral dual infections, the clinical aspects of rhinovirus infections in children are the following: upper respiratory tract infections (25.6%), bronchiolitis ou bronchitis (25.6%), pneumonia (6.2%), acute attack of asthma (5.7%). The virological diagnosis according to culture is mainly improved by molecular techniques.
