The vast majority of coastal dunes in Europe have been stabilized by increasing vegetation cover since the mid‐20th century. However, some systems may experience a remobilization phase, generally occurring locally and further propagating alongshore, the drivers of which remain poorly documented. This study investigates the evolutionary paths (stabilization/destabilization/remobilization) from 1945 to 2020 of a 2 km‐long modern coastal transgressive dunefield located in southwest France with a holistic approach (GPR profiles, aerial photographs and LiDAR topographic data). Results show a landward migration of the transgressive dune by approximately 233 ± 7.5 m, through two distinct stages of rapid landward migration from 10 to 23 m/yr (Stage I: 1949–1959 and Stage III: 2000–2021) separated by an approximately 40‐year stage of slow to no migration, but with substantial windward slope deflation (Stage II). The onset of Stage II is due to the fixation of vegetation by human action between 1950 and 1959. The onset of Stage III is hypothesized to be driven by long and sustained upper backshore/dune toe erosion beginning in 1968 due to a massive shoal welding that locally disturbed the longshore drift. It induced a destabilization of the dune and erosion of the vegetation cover over some decades. A non‐synchronization is therefore observed between the start of the perturbation (1968), then the migration (2000), in line with the hysteresis concept of Tsoar (2005). This study shows that almost all of the sedimentary volume of the 1945 dune has been remobilized by translation to shape the dune system in its current form. The 2.2 km dunefield has grown by approximately 673 000 ± 190 000 m3 during the 2005–2020 period. Among this volume, there is a new foredune that was built from 2005 between the upper beach and the transgressive dune (volume in 2020 of about 394 000 ± 68 000 m3). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cuspate forelands or salients occur all over the world in lakes, estuaries and on ocean shores, yet there have been few studies conducted on traveling cuspate forelands (or salients), that is, forelands that migrate or travel alongshore. This paper presents a study of a traveling foreland in the Authie estuary, France, termed the Bec du Perroquet. Historical shoreline changes may be traced from the 1200's AD and the region has experienced both marked intertidal-subtidal accretion extending from the south, and massive erosion in the north since this period. An analysis of aerial photographs from 1947 until the present shows that the original Bec foreland was established at the mouth of the Authie estuary, but gradually disappeared by the 1960's and a new foreland developed in the middle of the northern-central portion of the bay. This foreland was composed of a suite of foredune ridges which have been successively eroded on the northern margin and initiated on the southern margin as the foreland traveled or migrated southwards. As the foreland traveled south, from 1947 to 2009 the northern part of the bay retreated more than 350 m, while mid-bay, the coastline retreated ~ 215 m. As the foreland evolves and migrates, incipient foredunes can develop rapidly (e.g. 18 ridges formed in an 11 week period), while at other times the ridges form slowly and may be eroded and disappear. Two or more foredune ridges may blend into a single ridge over time depending on the initial degree of vegetation cover on the ridge and swale set. Aeolian processes in dune swales are much more important in this system than in typical prograding foredune plain systems due to the sometimes marked lack of vegetation colonization in the swales following foredune ridge development, and aeolian deflation of the swales (along with blowout development) is important particularly when they become open conduits to the beach as erosion of the NW foreland proceeds. The ages of each of the surviving ridges on the foreland in 2009 have been determined, and the evolutionary path of the ridges ascertained. Formerly intact, relatively stable, continuous ridges evolve to erosional knobs, turrets and nebkha over time. Foredune ridges (and swales) can be extremely arcuate to semi-circular in form where the foreland and especially the spit extension are exposed to a wide range of wind directions and where the shoreline trends through an arc of at least 270°. This study illustrates a remarkable cycling of the formation, destruction and reformation (travel) of a cuspate foreland over a ~ 50 + year period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Foredunes are efficient natural coastal defenses acting as protective barriers during storm events. A striking example is the response of coastal dunes along the Aquitaine Coast (SW France) to the 2013-2014 winter, which was the most energetic winter since at least the mid-20th century in most of the NE Atlantic. The aim of this study is to analyze the (partial) foredune recovery from the 2013-2014 winter at Truc Vert beach using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and through the coastal dune internal structure. Geophysical data was compared with semi-monthly DGPS topographic data of the beach, UAV-photogrammetry and Airborne LiDAR surveys of the coastal dune. Three main recovery phases were identified from the 2013-2014 winter: (i) aggradation of the upper-beach and dune front-crest during the post-storm summer; (ii) distinct phases of incipient dune-foot development with dune-crest stability during the following year, and (iii) since 2016, aggradation of both dune-foot and dune front-crest tending towards an equilibrium profile. This study shows that GPR surveys, combined with chronological topographic data, is an efficient tool to provide comprehensive understanding of the beach-dune system evolution at a decadal scale. Foredunes provide many environmental and ecosystem services including protection from wave erosion and flooding hazards during storm events. While the impact of human interventions on the short-term evolution of coastal dunes is reasonably well understood, less is known about their contemporary influence on current wind and sediment dynamics several decades after implementation. The coastal dunes in Leucate (SE, France) have been anthropogenically constructed and are dominated by offshore wind conditions. Since their construction 20 years ago, a distinct variation in their longshore morphology has developed that is inherited from its original construction. The northern part of the dune has a symmetrical profile with a 28° degree stoss slope, 30° lee slope and a single crest. The southern part is asymmetric, with a gentler stoss slope (12°), 26° lee slope, and a double crest. To explore the potential geomorphic impacts of this distinct difference in morphology, several numerical simulations with varying wind speeds and direction were conducted. We used Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to explore the spatial variations of the near surface wind flow, shear stress and aeolian sediment transport. show that for each scenario, near surface wind speed accelerated toward the dune crest on the windward slope of the dune. The maximum wind speed varied with incident wind direction, the highest speeds occurring when incident wind flow was perpendicular to the dune crest. The double crest in the southern section of the dune affected the wind flow by inducing two consecutive speeds-up zones, with a greater maximum wind speed than on the single crested dune. Wind flow separation was observed where a steep lee slope was present (single crested dune), and only during perpendicular winds. This suggests that the shape of the dune and the direction of the wind are key parameters rather than wind speed. The area affected by reversed separated flow was spatially limited and did not extend beyond the dune toe but was below the threshold for aeolian sediment transport. Elsewhere in the lee of the dune, the wind was only deflected by an order of 15° for the oblique winds (310 and 330°), and less than 10° for the perpendicular wind (290°) on the southern part. In these locations, the shear velocity exceeded the threshold, notably on the southern dune, which coincided with the formation of undulating aeolian deposits in the lee of vegetation on the dune crest. The spatial differences observed in wind flow and aeolian sediment transport processes on this human-made dune were directly inherited from differences in their construction two decades ago.
