The lake sediment record was used to reconstruct past vegetation dynamics and human impacts from the middle Neolithic (6500 cal. b.p.) to the Middle Ages (1500 cal. b.p.) around Lac d'Antre in the southern Jura mountains of France. This lake was surrounded by the Gallo-Roman sanctuary of Villards d'Héria, which has been widely investigated by archaeologists and enables a comparison between palaeoenvironmental proxies and archaeological data. Pollen and microscopic charcoal analyses were conducted on a 500 cm sediment core with eleven radiocarbon dates providing the chronological control. In a mixed oak woodland context, the successive development of Taxus, Fagus and Abies were mainly caused by climatic variations during the Neolithic, in which there was weak human impact. The first significant signs of human activity were detected during the Bronze Age from 3900 cal. b.p., followed by an increase of human pressure and woodland clearances during the Iron Age, from 2700 cal. b.p. The occupation of the Gallo-Roman sanctuary was continuous with the Iron Age occupation. All the analysed palaeoenvironmental data indicate that the strongest human impact occurred during the Gallo-Roman period, which matches the occupation of Villards d'Héria previously dated by archaeologists from 2000 to 1700 cal. b.p., 1st to 3rd century a.d. Moreover, there appears to have been a new period of human settlement close to the lake at the beginning of the Middle Ages. The low charcoal accumulation rate (CHAR) recorded during the Bronze and Iron Ages suggests that fire was not the main agent used to clear the dense woods to create new cultivated fields and pastures. A multiproxy approach to a sediment sequence at Lake Saint-Point in the French Jura Mountains gives evidence of a strong coupling between changes in terrestrial and lacustrine ecosystems throughout the Holocene. The early Holocene (11,700–10,200 cal. BP) is characterised by the recovery of terrestrial and lake ecosystems favoured by climatic warming. During the middle Holocene (10,600–6200 cal. BP), the climatic optimum coincided with an extension of deciduous forests into the catchment area, while lake sedimentation is dominated by authigenic carbonates and low detrital inputs. After 6200 cal. BP, the Neoglacial favoured expansion of Abies-Fagus forests and increasing detrital inputs to the lake where ostracod fauna declined and changed in composition. After 1200 cal. BP, human impact was responsible for extensive forest clearings in the catchment area, while the lake basin shows contrasting pictures with increasing detrital input, resuming sedimentation of authigenic carbonates and changes in dominant ostracod species. Orbitally driven climatic variations were the dominant factor of environmental changes until c. 1200 cal. BP. Around 2600 cal. BP, human impact increased and became the major factor in the catchment area and the lake basin from 1200 cal. BP onwards. Finally, the Saint-Point record offers a clear illustration of how gradual changes in insolation or increasing human impact may provoke, even under temperate climatic conditions, abrupt responses in mid-European terrestrial and lake ecosystems, and how differences in the dates of tipping points revealed by proxies suggest specific threshold values depending on the sensitivity of indicators used and on their role in the different compartments of these ecosystems. Abstract: This paper presents quantitative climate estimates for the last millennium, using a multi-proxy approach with pollen and lake-level data from Lake Joux (Swiss Jura Mountains). The climate reconstruction, based on the Modern Analogue Technique, indicates warmer and drier conditions during the Medieval Warm Period (MWP). MWP was preceded by a short-lived cold humid event around AD 1060, and followed by a rapid return around AD 1400 to cooler and wetter conditions which generally characterize the Little Ice Age (LIA). Around AD 1450 (solar Spörer minimum), the LIA attained a temperature minimum and a summer precipitation maximum. The solar Maunder minimum around AD 1690 corresponded at Joux to rather mild temperatures but maximal annual precipitation. These results generally agree with other records from neighbouring Alpine regions. However, there are differences in the timing of the LIA temperature minimum depending on the proxy and/or the method used for the reconstruction. As a working hypothesis, the hydrological signal associated with the MWP and LIA oscillations at Lake Joux may have been mainly driven by a shift around AD 1400 from positive to negative NAO modes in response to variations in solar irradiance possibly coupled with changes in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. Abstract: This article presents a 241cm long sediment record documenting the vegetation history using pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs recovered from the Fénay marsh in Burgundy (Dijon area – France). The pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs (NPP) record largely reflects intensive human influence (clearing, cultivation and grazing) on the surrounding area from the Late Bronze Age and Hallstatt period. La Tène period is marked by drier conditions and a substantial increase in Alnus. During the Gallo-Roman period, high values of Alnus decrease to the benefit of Quercus. In the Early Middle Ages (5th–10th C), the swamp becomes a temporary pond and Cerealia type and Secale are cultivated in this very open landscape. During the Late Middle Ages (13th–15th C), the temporary pond is transformed into a larger and deeper pond, used by the Cistercians for hydraulic power and perhaps as a hemp-retting pit. Abstract: Pollen analyses of three sediment cores performed on the archaeological lake dwellings of Chindrieux and Tresserve (Savoie, France), on the eastern shore of Lake Bourget, enable the reconstruction of vegetation history and human impact during the Bronze Age. Results show a good correlation between lake-level fluctuations and the evolution of anthropogenic indicators. The end of the Neolithic period and the early Bronze Age are characterised by a discreet occupation of the Lake Bourget surroundings, in spite of a warmer climatic condition. The middle Bronze Age, contemporaneous with wetter and cooler conditions, is related to a decrease in pollen of cultivated plants and weed. Farming activities reappear in the late Bronze Age and human impact increases suddenly at the very end of the late Bronze Age. Three anthropogenic phases are clearly visible: a short decrease in anthropogenic indicators and a high lake-level phase occur in the middle of this period of intense farming development. In order to better understand the evolution of past climate-human-environment interactions in the northwestern Alps during the Holocene, we have analysed the lipid content of two cores taken from the sediments of Lake le Bourget (French Alps). By using a specific molecular biomarker of Panicum miliaceum (broomcorn millet) previously defined and a new molecular marker of soil erosion, we demonstrate that the onset of millet cultivation coincides with the onset of major soil erosion in the catchment during the Middle Bronze Age. Although archaeological and archaeobotanical investigations indicate a discrete human occupation of the lakeshores at this period, they also point to a regional change in agricultural practices that deeply affected soils. The evolution of millet cultivation appears in strong connection with climatic variations, estimated in the same cores from the variations in titanium, a proxy of hydrological changes in the region. Social and cultural triggers cannot be discarded at this stage. The Franche-Comte region played an important role in the iron industry since at least the Hallstatt Period, but particularly since the industrial revolution (from the end of the 18th century). The presence of thousands of charcoal kilns in the main forest of Besançon (regional capital) is the subject of this study. The aim was to further our understanding of these archaeological objects, and to characterize the impact of charcoal production on the past vegetation. A geophysical survey (magnetic susceptibility) was conducted on two platforms. Charcoal analyses of 11 charcoal kilns and a regressive approach on the current vegetation were undertaken for comparative purposes. The platforms are modern and seem to have been used several times during a short 250-year period. Based on historical sources and compared with forests used for the iron industry, the vegetation of the forest of Chailluz appears to have been harvested for a variety of purposes, notably the iron industry and domestic use. Tree species used to produce charcoal were correlated with the environmental offering and site conditions but charcoal production seemed to open the forest structure. More light demanding taxa and fewer shade-tolerant species than nowadays have been observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
