Aim To examine the engagement of French registered nurses with the Ministry of Health's initiative to spur scientific inquiry in the community. Background French nursing research has suffered from a lack of dedicated funding. Positive signs of change have recently appeared, with the launch of the first national public funding programme dedicated to nursing research. This initiative, begun in 2010, was launched by the French Ministry of Health. Through this initiative, 149 registered nurses, serving as principal investigators, and their teams submitted research proposals between 2010 and 2011. The administrative guidelines of the funding programme are clearly oriented towards producing quantitative and exogenous nursing research. Method A cross-sectional analysis of 149 nursing research projects submitted during the first and second years of a French national funding programme for hospital-based nursing research was conducted. Research proposals were included in the analysis whether they received funding or not. Data collection took place in 2011. The categories used in the analysis were the following: (1) the socio-demographic data on the registered nurse principal investigators, (2) the research teams and (3) the research proposals (methodologies, bibliography, focus of the research, output, the status of the research proposals). Results This study highlights the presence of methodological homogeneity among the research proposals submitted for funding. Clear tendencies were towards interventional and quantitative studies and those with an exogenous factor research objective. Between 2010 and 2011, 25 projects were funded out of 149 submitted. They were mostly quantitative and/or focused on the exogenous factors in patient care. Conclusion The socio-political context of a funding programme designed to encourage nursing research has had an implicit influence on the type of research to which French nurses have committed themselves to and the scientific positions with which these nurse researchers align themselves. International Nursing Review Background: France is currently implementing a number of reforms to the healthcare and education systems. Within this context, a comprehensive reform of undergraduate nurse education was launched in 2009, bringing nurse education closer to the higher education environment. It is likely in future to move from being vocational towards becoming an academic educational programme. Aim: In this paper, the 2009 reform of the French pre-registration nursing curriculum will be analysed in light of the European framework. Process: The pedagogical approach, methods and content of nursing education in France are undergoing an in-depth reorganization. The main innovation that the reforms introduce is a competency-based approach. France is joining the group of countries that require first degree-level entry to the nursing profession. Conclusion: There are still many unanswered questions regarding the competencies and qualifications required by both the academic and clinical educators many of whom have not been previously involved in research or publications. The future status of nursing science is unclear, as is the way in which the nursing profession will be able to retain control over its educational mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nurses have largely contributed to the national effort to fight the Covid-19 crisis, but have also been strongly affected by its consequences. This observation, reinforced by the recent recommendations of the World Health Organization's report on the situation of nurses in the world, underlines the need to initiate changes in the nursing field in France without delay., (Copyright © 2022. France needs to meet numerous public health challenges and maintain universal cover for its population. It is nevertheless surprising to observe that the development of nursing leadership, which is an effective strategy in numerous other countries, is not a priority in France. An assessment of the impact of advanced practice will be presented to the French parliament in 2021. Advanced practice nurses must make use of this opportunity. Indeed, this assessment is likely to come with major challenges in terms of the reorganisation of the healthcare provision following the implementation of this new function. Following the publication of the regulatory framework by the relevant ministries, the summer of 2018 was very busy for the university teams intending to offer, from September, an advanced nursing practice course. The training programme selected mainly follows on from existing initial training programmes but there are also a number of aspects which are particularly innovative in the nursing pathway. Setting up this training requires a change in social representations, still a source of challenges. Managing the Transition From Nurse to Advanced Practice Nurse: Qualified nurses who go on to undertake further training often find the transition difficult. This phenomenon has been studied more specifically in the field of advanced practice nursing. As France prepares to train and deploy state registered advanced practice nurses, it is essential to incorporate the learnings arising from research, in order to facilitate their training programme and their integration into their first role. Introduction : many structured educational programs, using the concept of self-efficacy, have been studied in English-speaking countries. Background : tools were developed in English to assess this concept along with treatment adherence. However, there seems to be no French version of these tools in scientific literature. Aim : to adapt the tools to the French language and to test the psychometric properties of the Self-Efficacy for Diabetes Self-Management (SEDM) and the Diabetes Self-Management Profile (DSMP). Methods : a cross-cultural adaptation of the SEDM and DSMP in French was performed. The psychometric properties were tested in a pilot study that took place between January 1st and December 31st, 2015. Results : Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of SEDM in French was 0.84, test-retest reliability 0.80 and sensitivity to change was moderate. The Cronbach’s alpha and sensitivity to change of the French DSMP were low, and the test-retest was 0.71. Discussion and conclusions : the first results of the psychometric properties of French SEDM were rather encouraging. The use of the French version of DSMP seems compromised in terms of psychometric properties and the opinion of the participants.

Background: The development of nursing research capacity and interactions with cultural and structural issues is at various stages throughout Europe. This process appears to be remarkably similar irrespective of the country. Sweden has developed this capacity since the 1990s, whereas France is experiencing a transition. Nevertheless, knowledge about how nurses conceive their learning about nursing research and transitioning toward being researchers is scarce., Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore French and Swedish RNs' conceptions of research education and educational passage toward research and to describe how learning research contributes to the understanding of their norms and practices., Design: A phenomenographic approach was used to understand and describe the qualitatively different ways in which French and Swedish RNs conceive research and its apprenticeship., Settings and Participants: A purposive maximum variation sampling of five French and five Swedish Nurse Researchers with PhDs., Methods: Individual in-depth interviews conducted in France and Sweden between November 2012 and March 2013 were analysed using phenomenography., Findings: The analysis revealed one main category, "Organisational factors to sustain individual apprenticeship". Three descriptive categories have emerged from the data and its variations amongst French and Swedish nurses: (1) entrance into research--modes of commitment; (2) nurses' engagement--the need for dedicated support; and (3) research as the means to resolve nursing situations., Conclusions: This study demonstrates how registered nurses have integrated nursing and researcher roles following different efficient paths. In France, certified nurse clinicians have been working in various fields of activity for a number of years. Recent political decisions aim to create the role of nurse clinician specialised in oncology as well as advanced nursing practice. In this context, an explanation of the terminology and the history of this domain is necessary in order to shed light on the ongoing discussion process.

There are two types of training programmes open to nurses to enable them to become a nurse clinician: certification-based programmes and masters degree. Based on the clinical nursing raisonning, these training courses enable professionals to develop their knowledge in nursing sciences and their expertise, notably in the framework of complex care pathways.

In France, the nursing profession still struggles to publish its professional work and nursing research is in development. Increasing the number of publications is a major area of focus for nurses in France. Working in this direction requires the integration of some fundamental rules which will enable the novice author to successfully submit their papers.

To promote the publication of nursing writing, two professional associations organise awards to which students can submit their final year dissertations. The publication of this work helps to promote practices and encourages young professionals to publish.

Experimental studies potentially produce scientific evidence. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to pay particular attention to three elements essential for the validity of the study: randomisation, manipulation and control.

Maximal exercise test with gas exchange measurement evaluates exercise capacities with maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2) max) measurement. Measurements of lactate (L), lactate/pyruvate ratio (L/P) and ammonium (A) during rest, exercise and recovery enhance interpretative power of maximal exercise by incorporating muscular metabolism exploration. Maximal exercise test with gas exchange measurement is standardized in cardiopulmonary evaluations but, no reference data of blood muscular metabolites are available to evaluate the muscular metabolism. We determined normal values of L, L/P and A during a standardized maximal exercise and recovery in 48 healthy sedentary volunteers and compared with results obtained in four patients with exercise intolerance and a mitochondrial disease. In healthy subjects, L, L/P and A rose during exercise. In 98% of them L, L/P or A decreased between the fifth and the fifteenth minutes of recovery. In mitochondrial patients, VO(2) max was normal or low, and L, L/P and A had the same evolution as normal subjects or showed no decrease during recovery. We gave normal L, L/P and A values, which establish references for a maximal exercise test with muscular metabolism exploration. Recent reforms demonstrate a will to define what advanced nursing practices should consist of in France. The United States developed this concept some time ago, notably in the field of mental health.

The concept of quality of life in healthcare, a complex definition. The assessment of quality of life occupies a central place in the field of healthcare. Extensive research was carried out into the subject during the 20th century. Ojectifying a subjective and multi-dimensional concept remains a difficult task. Several societal, economic and epistemological factors must be taken into account.

Research enables the nursing profession to develop its nursing practices. From an international point of view, France has fallen behind in this field. There exist several international and European structures devoted to research which provide French nurses with high quality tools.

Evolutions in nursing practice in France and the health characteristics of the population call for a promotion of expertise development. While reflections as to the relevance and the means of transposing the concept of advanced practices in nursing care continue on a national level, a specific master's degree for nurses has been available since 2009.

Child care nurses, just like other nursing specialities, are involved in a descriptive as well as a prospective reflection of the contribution they make in the area of healthcare. A look back at this nursing speciality provides a better understanding of the issues involved and opens up the perspectives of this reflection.
