The Bages-Sigean lagoon is situated on the northwestern margin of the Gulf of Lion, in the Languedoc region, Southern France. The evolution of this lagoon has been reconstructed through sedimentological and palaeoecological (ostracods and palynology) studies performed on a 29 m-long core. While the age-depth model proposed is based on radiocarbon dates, some inconsistencies require rejecting several ones and using pollinic chronological markers. The base of the core corresponds to a Pleistocene glacial steppic environment characterized by open land vegetation. This unit is topped by fluvial deposits with an estimated early Holocene age, according to palynological indicators. The overlying deposits represent a succession of estuarine and marine facies, following by the progressive set up of a lagoonal environment at ca. 2500 cal. BP. Palynology attests to the human impact on vegetation since ca. 4600 cal. BP through the identification of agricultural activities in the Languedoc plains and the exploitation of Mediterranean and mountain forests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Current contamination levels of selected legacy, currently-used and emerging halogenated contaminants were monitored in marine shellfish along French coastlines. The studied contaminants included polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDDs), 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE), decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE), hexabromobenzene (HBB), 2,2′,4,4′,5,5′-hexabromobiphenyl (BB-153) and perfluorinated compounds (PFCs). BDE-47, BDE-209, BTBPE, HBB and α-HBCDD were detected in 100% of the analyzed samples, whereas BB-153, DBDPE and PFOS were detected at frequencies of 97%, 90% and 55%, respectively. Concentrations were in the pg g −1 ww range and varied as follows: PFOS > BDE-47 ∼ α-HBCDD > BDE-209 > BTBPE ∼ DBDPE > HBB ∼ BB-153. Overall, non-PBDE Brominated Flame Retardants (BFRs) revealed concentrations between 3 and 59 times lower than those of PBDEs. PBDE pattern was dominated by BDE-47, followed by BDE-99 > BDE-100 > BDE-49 > BDE-209 > BDE-154; these 6 congeners represented 94% of the summed ten PBDEs. PFC pattern determination revealed PFOS as the predominant PFC in samples from the English Channel and Atlantic, whereas perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) prevailed in Mediterranean samples. Temporal trend investigations on archived samples from the Mediterranean coast collected between 1981 and 2012 showed a prevalence of PFOS until 1998; PFCAs subsequently increased and became more abundant than PFOS. High levels of PFCAs were observed until 2008, followed by a decrease and stabilization in 2010–2012. Amongst PFCAs, perfluorotridecanoic acid (PFTrDA) and perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnA) were predominant and exhibited similar time trends, suggesting similar sources at the investigated site, home to major industrial activity. Abstract: Many studies based on bioenergetics growth models have investigated the effects of environmental factors on oyster (Crassostrea gigas) growth and physiology. However, most of these models are site-specific and cannot be applied to other culture sites without the re-estimation of parameters or re-formulation of some processes. We aimed to develop a generic growth model suitable for application in contrasting environments, with a constant set of parameters. We tested the oyster-DEB model (Bourlès et al. 2009) for the stimulation of C. gigas growth in different cohorts (spats and adults) at major shellfish culture sites in France, in several years: Arcachon (1993–1994); Marennes-Oléron (2007); Quiberon (1999, 2000, 2001); Brest Harbour (2008); Mont-Saint-Michel Bay (2003); Baie-des-Veys (2002). These different ecosystems offer a wide range of values for the two forcing variables of the model: water temperature (range: 6-24°C) and phytoplankton concentration (annual average: 110–700×103 cell L-1). The validation data (dry flesh mass of C. gigas) were obtained from various growth surveys carried out by IFREMER. The oyster-DEB model simulated the oyster growth dynamics of both spat and adult stages of C. gigas accurately over time at the various culture sites. The model captures: i) the active spring growth; ii) the timing and amplitude of spawning events; and iii) the lean periods (i.e. loss of dry flesh mass) in autumn and winter. The half-saturation coefficient X k is the only model parameter that varied between sites and years. This environment-specific coefficient reflects variability in the food of the oysters: quantitative and qualitative effects of the inorganic material and of the phytoplankton species on the feeding response of C. gigas. With a single set of parameters (other than for X k ), this is thus the first bio-energetic growth model for C. gigas robust enough and of a sufficiently generic nature for the accurate simulation of oyster growth in different Atlantic ecosystems. Abstract: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in the coastal sea surface microlayer (SML), the sub-surface waters (SSW) and the overlying atmosphere in order to investigate the influence of the SML on contaminant enrichment and air–sea exchange. Samples were collected at two contrasting locations of the NW Mediterranean, one urban influenced (off Barcelona, Spain) and another comparatively clean (off Banyuls-sur-Mer, France). Statistical data analysis confirmed the accumulation of PAHs in the SML with respect to the SSW (20. 3±9. 1 vs. 13. 1±10. 0ngL−1 in the dissolved phase; 709±207 vs. 158±111ngg−1 in the particulate phase). This accumulation was higher at the contaminated location (Barcelona station) compared with the more pristine one, with PAH enrichments 1. 5 and 4. 5 times higher for the dissolved and particulate phases, respectively, indicating that the enrichment of PAHs in the SML is dominated by particle transport processes. Aims: This study was carried out to evaluate the presence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and E. coli O157:H7 in shellfish from French coastal environments. Methods and Results: Shellfish were collected in six growing areas or natural beds (B category) and nonfarming areas (D category) from July 2002 to August 2004. PCR detection of stx genes was performed on homogenized whole shellfish and digestive gland tissues enrichments. STEC strains were detected by colony DNA hybridization using a stx-specific gene probe and E. coli O157 strains were additionally searched by immunomagnetic separation with O157-specific magnetic beads. Stx genes were detected in 40 of 144 (27·8%) sample enrichments from mussels, oysters or cockles, 32 of 130 enrichments (24·6%) were from B-category areas and eight of 14 (57·1%) from the D-category area. Five strains carrying stx1 or stx1 d genes and one stx negative, eae and ehxA positive E. coli O157:H7 were isolated from six of 40 stx-positive enrichments. No relation was found between the total E. coli counts in shellfish and the presence of STEC strains in the samples. Conclusions: The STEC strains of different serotypes and stx types are present in shellfish from French coastal environments. It is the first isolation of STEC stx1d strains in France. The French national program on the coastal environment Programme National Environnement Coˆtier (PNEC) represented during the last decade a major support for the pluridisciplinary oceanographic research in the Gulf of Lion. During the second phase of the program, that lasted from 1997 to 2001, the main objective for this worksite was to establish an annual budget of carbon and associated biogenic elements to characterise the role of this region as source and the sink of elements. Rapid environmental changes along the Mediterranean coasts influenced the sedimentary dynamics, shoreline position and human settlements in deltaic areas over the last millennia. An innovative and multiproxy approach using geostatistical modelling was developed to estimate geomorphic evolution and sediment fluxes in deltaic areas, while palaeoecological conditions and environmental changes were assessed from geochemistry and cluster analyses of molluscan fauna. This method was applied to the coastal plain of the Argens River in southern France. Depositional environments of prodelta, delta front, river channel, floodplain, marsh and abandoned channel were identified from the study of facies associations. The late Holocene sediment flux in the Argens River bayhead delta ranged from 15,800 ± 2300 to 52,000 ± 8500 m3·yr−1. The highest rate of sediment deposition between 2500 and 2000 cal yr BP was associated with increased river flooding in southeastern France. A general decrease in subaqueous sediment flux over the past 2500 years was primarily controlled by a decrease in accommodation space and delta slope. From 500 to 0 cal yr BP, a sharp increase in subaerial sediment flux probably due to hydroclimatic change was contemporaneous with a period of high flood frequency during the Little Ice Age. The emergence and worldwide spread of SARS-CoV-2 raises new concerns and challenges regarding possible environmental contamination by this virus through spillover of human sewage, where it has been detected. The coastal environment, under increasing anthropogenic pressure, is subjected to contamination by a large number of human viruses from sewage, most of them being non-enveloped viruses like norovirus. When reaching coastal waters, they can be bio-accumulated by filter-feeding shellfish species such as oysters. Methods to detect this viral contamination were set up for the detection of non-enveloped enteric viruses, and may need optimization to accommodate enveloped viruses like coronaviruses (CoV). Here, we aimed at assessing methods for the detection of CoV, including SARS-CoV-2, in the coastal environment and testing the possibility that SARS-CoV-2 can contaminate oysters, to monitor the contamination of French shores by SARS-CoV-2 using both seawater and shellfish. Using the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), a CoV, as surrogate for SARS-CoV-2, and Tulane virus, as surrogate for non-enveloped viruses such as norovirus, we assessed and selected methods to detect CoV in seawater and shellfish. Seawater-based methods showed variable and low yields for PEDV. In shellfish, the current norm for norovirus detection was applicable to CoV detection. Both PEDV and heat-inactivated SARS-CoV-2 could contaminate oysters in laboratory settings, with a lower efficiency than a calicivirus used as control. Finally, we applied our methods to seawater and shellfish samples collected from April to August 2020 in France, where we could detect the presence of human norovirus, a marker of human fecal contamination, but not SARS-CoV-2.
