The article focuses on the 1804 grand tour of France made by American Romantic author Washington Irving. The author considers how Irving's travels for reasons of health and education were part of the accepted ideas motivating Continental grand tours. He argues that Irving's journal and correspondence from his trip depict typical American exceptionalist sentiments of France's civilization and politics. Irving's observations on censorship, social classes, national character, and the vandalism of cultural property and national monuments are detailed.
