Abstract: In intermittent rivers, characterised by a specific hydrological behaviour, sediment–water column interactions may influence water quality during low flows. The main objective of this work was to assess the extent of anthropogenic pollution (organotins, faecal indicator bacteria and nutrients) in the river sediment of an intermittent river and its impact on the downstream water bodies: The Vène River, main tributary of the Thau lagoon. We first investigated anthropogenic pollution from water and sediment samples collected in situ along the river course (1.5km); then, during laboratory experiments, we assessed the survival of faecal bacteria and quantified the degradation rates of organotins on the same sediments. The results indicate the presence of anthropogenic pollution all along the study reach. The waste water treatment plant effluent is a direct pollution input source for anthropogenic pollution. The sediment data points to an urban drainage ditch as a secondary point pollution source while the organotins data highlights the presence of other diffuse sources, specific to this substance. The results of the laboratory experiments show that both faecal bacteria and organotins may persist in the river sediments for up to two months in summer and even longer in winter. This indicates that sediments may, under favourable conditions, become important pollutant stores which may later be released and transported to the Thau lagoon during floods. Application of Chemcatcher® to monitor organotin compounds [monobutyltin (MBT), dibutyltin (DBT) and tributlytin (TBT)] in sea water has been little developed. Prior to the measurement of the time-weighted average water concentrations (TWAC), a calibration step is required to determine sampling rates (Rs) which is usually assessed in a flow-through laboratory pilot where experimental conditions are well controlled. This paper investigates the effect of the water matrix (tap water vs real sea water from the harbor of Port Camargue in France) and organotin concentrations on the uptake rates of organotin compounds. Laboratory calibrations provided sampling rates in the range of 66–225 mL.day−1 in high concentration (usually used for laboratory calibrations) and in the range of 30–56 mL.day−1 at low concentrations (environmental range). When the tank is filled with real sea water, sampling rates were found to be in the range of 38–177 mL.day−1. In order to demonstrate the efficiency of Chemcatcher® in real conditions, in situ calibration was done in the harbor of Port Camargue. This calibration has been done in order to replicate environmental conditions: compounds concentrations, hydrodynamic and water matrix effects. To compare the impact of calibration procedures on TWAC determination, Chemcatcher® was deployed in the harbor of Port Camargue and spot sampling was performed to monitor the concentrations of organotins in water throughout the exposure period. Results obtained using the field Rs determined by in situ calibration were more reliable. In this case, TWAC is in agreement with spot sampling concentration. Abstract: Urdaibai was declared a Biosphere’s Reserve by UNESCO in 1984. Because we observed a high prevalence of hermaphroditism in mussels sampled in Urdaibai in March 2004, we started the present research work in order to determine the presence of endocrine disruptors (EDs) in sediments and to study possible EDs effects on mussels and oysters using gonad index and vitellogenin (VTG)-like protein levels as biomarkers. Samples were collected at five localities in April 2007 and 2008, and in October 2007. Estrogenic hormones were not detected in sediments and levels of bisphenol A and organotin compounds were very low. Alkylphenols were found at moderate levels and showed a time-dependent decrease. Phthalates were found at levels up to 8000ng/g. High prevalence of oocyte atresia and necrosis occurred in mussels sampled in April. Retarded gametogenesis was observed in an oyster population from a shipyard. Hermaphrodites or alterations in VTG-like protein levels were not found but the high prevalence of histopathological alterations in oocytes is of concern. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
