The article describes the 1970s in NASCAR automobile racing, when the sport went nationwide due to television broadcasting of races. Richard Petty reigned as the sport's king, but was hotly contested by Bobby Allison, Benny Parsons, David Pearson and Cale Yarborough. Sponsorship by R. J. Reynolds and Winston cigarettes expanded the sport and the 1979 Daytona 500 was telecast in its entirety.
