The fundamental pioneering ideas about student-centered, inquiry-based learning initiatives are differing in Europe and the US. The latter had initiated various top-down schemes that have led to well-defined standards, while in Europe, with its some 50 independent educational systems, a wide variety of approaches has been evolved. In this present paper, we portray a European bottom-up initiative, "PATHWAY to Inquiry Based Science Education," to define a basis for learning initiatives and to meet current challenges to access learning, to share knowledge and establish competences in learning communities. Our approach was designed to act as bottom-up catalyst by mobilizing teacher communities to (further) foster inquiry. Of a sample of 10.053 science teachers from 15 European countries (incl. Russia), about 5060 provided empirical support for our teachers' professional development initiative. The response pattern portrayed teachers' preferences and pointed to potential needs in professional development (PD) efforts. On average, our sample reported an altogether 11 years' period of teaching practice in general but just 2-3 years of experience in inquiry-teaching. In the view of that, consequences for professional development (PD) initiatives are discussed.

Considerable progress has been made in breast cancer treatment in Europe over the past three decades, yet survival rates for metastatic disease remain poor, underlining the need for further advances. While the use of predictive biomarkers for response to systemic therapy could improve drug development efficiency, progress in identifying such markers has been slow. The currently inadequate classification of breast cancer subtypes is a further challenge. Improved understanding of the molecular pathology of the disease has led to the identification of new targets for drug treatment, and evolving classifications should reflect these developments. Further ongoing challenges include difficulties in finding optimal combinations and sequences of systemic therapies, circumventing multidrug resistance and intra-tumor heterogeneity, problems associated with fragmentation in clinical trials and translational research efforts. Keratinocyte-derived skin cancers comprise basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, its precursor actinic keratosis, and Bowen's disease. Historically, this group of neoplasms has been subsumed under the term non-melanoma skin cancer. However, the term non-melanoma skin cancer can be misleading and lacks precision. Therefore, more precise and reasonable terminology, valuing the relevance of keratinocyte-derived cancer, appears pertinent to meet its clinical and scientific significance. A group of experienced dermato-oncologists initiated a consensus approach to promote the use of the term "keratinocyte cancer" instead of "non-melanoma skin cancer" when referring to carcinomas and their precursors that are derived from keratinocytes. The vote among members of the consensus group indicated unanimous agreement on the consistent use of the term "keratinocyte cancer" instead of "non-melanoma skin cancer". International delegates also voted in favour of the revised terminology. The more precise and, by means of etiopathogenesis, correct term "keratinocyte cancer" should be consistently used for malignancies originated from keratinocytes. This is expected to have a positive impact on patient-physician communication and gives better justice to this important group of keratinocyte-derived cancers.

Background: A 70-gene signature was previously shown to have prognostic value in patients with node-negative breast cancer. Our goal was to validate the signature in an independent group of patients., Methods: Patients (n = 307, with 137 events after a median follow-up of 13.6 years) from five European centers were divided into high- and low-risk groups based on the gene signature classification and on clinical risk classifications. Patients were assigned to the gene signature low-risk group if their 5-year distant metastasis-free survival probability as estimated by the gene signature was greater than 90%. Patients were assigned to the clinicopathologic low-risk group if their 10-year survival probability, as estimated by Adjuvant! software, was greater than 88% (for estrogen receptor [ER]-positive patients) or 92% (for ER-negative patients). Hazard ratios (HRs) were estimated to compare time to distant metastases, disease-free survival, and overall survival in high- versus low-risk groups., Results: The 70-gene signature outperformed the clinicopathologic risk assessment in predicting all endpoints. For time to distant metastases, the gene signature yielded HR = 2.32 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.35 to 4.00) without adjustment for clinical risk and hazard ratios ranging from 2.13 to 2.15 after adjustment for various estimates of clinical risk; clinicopathologic risk using Adjuvant! software yielded an unadjusted HR = 1.68 (95% CI = 0.92 to 3.07). For overall survival, the gene signature yielded an unadjusted HR = 2.79 (95% CI = 1.60 to 4.87) and adjusted hazard ratios ranging from 2.63 to 2.89; clinicopathologic risk yielded an unadjusted HR = 1.67 (95% CI = 0.93 to 2.98). For patients in the gene signature high-risk group, 10-year overall survival was 0.69 for patients in both the low- and high-clinical risk groups; for patients in the gene signature low-risk group, the 10-year survival rates were 0.88 and 0.89, respectively., Conclusions: The 70-gene signature adds independent prognostic information to clinicopathologic risk assessment for patients with early breast cancer.

Migration from space medicine toward telemedicine services is described by potential application areas in highly populated and remote areas of Europe. Special emphasis is laid upon links between mobile patient monitoring and health care in remote areas. Pilot projects are described for home (mobile) monitoring of newborn infants endangered by sudden infant death (SID) and adults suffering from sleep apnoea. Health care in remote areas is described by the "TeleClinic-project" which will link national nodes for telemedicine services in several European states for the mobile European citizen. Another project describes the future potential of robotics for semiautonomous ultrasound diagnostics and for realtime interaction of remote experts with diagnostics and therapy.
