Approaches are needed to broaden the genetic base and improve earliness and yield potential of large-seeded beans under sustainable cropping systems. The objective of this research was to develop adapted dwarf bean populations having a commercial seed quality and yield suitable for the production in the South of Europe. The original base populations were produced from crosses between genotypes within each Mesoamerica, Nueva Granada and Peru races, and between Peru and Nueva Granada, and Mesoamerica and Nueva Granada races. Visual mass selection for plant performance was practised in the F2 and F3 generations. In the F4 and F5, single plants were harvested under two cropping systems (sole cropping and intercropping with maize). From F4, selection was based on precocity, combined with seed yield and seed commercial type. The F4:7 selected lines from each original population were compared with their parents and five checks at four environments and two cropping systems. Differences among environments, populations, parents and checks were observed for all traits. Under intercropping with maize, there was a 50% reduction in seed yield. Yield of parents and checks belonging to Andean South American races, intraracial (Nueva Granada × Nueva Granada) and interracial (Nueva Granada × Peru) populations, was higher than that of those of Middle American origin. Intraracial crosses within large-seeded Andean South American (Peru race) and Middle American gene pools (Mesoamerica race) did not produce lines yielding more than the highest yielding parent. Genetic diversity within a common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) collection, comprising 343 accessions from the Iberian Peninsula, was examined using six allozyme markers. Two major clusters corresponding to the Andean and Mesoamerican gene pools were identified. Both gene pools were characterized by specific alleles, with the former exhibiting Skdh100, Me100, Rbcs100 or 98 and Diap-1100, and the latter exhibiting Skdh103, Me100, Rbcs100 and Diap-195. Some accessions from both clusters, deviating from these allozyme patterns, exhibited Skdh100, Me100, Rbcs100 and Diap-195 or Skdh103, Me100, Rbcs100 and Diap-1100 allozyme profiles and were considered as putative hybrids.The levels of genetic variation has not been eroded since the introduction of the common bean from the American centers of domestication to the Iberian Peninsula. Instead, obvious signs of introgression between the two gene pools were observed, mainly among white-seeded genotypes. The intermediate forms adapted to the Iberian Peninsula could have emerged from initial recombination between Mesoamerican and Andean gene pools. The Iberian common bean germplasm is therefore more complex than previously thought, and contains additional diversity that remains to be explored for genetic and breeding purposes. Abstract: Due to adaptation to new ecological and manmade conditions, the large diversity evolved in the European common bean germplasm is of particular interest for plant breeding. The knowledge of the genetic relationships within and among races and gene pools and their performance per se will provide bean breeders with a starting point in designing crosses using contrasting and complementary parents to broaden the genetic base within the different commercial classes. A genetic study of seed size variation and protein markers in progeny derived from 16 intraracial, interracial and inter-gene pools European common bean populations was conducted. General and specific combining ability (GCA and SCA) values were significant for seed weight, indicating that both additive and nonadditive genetic effects were involved in conditioning seed weight. Interracial populations showed transgressive values due to the accumulation of large-seeded alleles. Genetic variation inside Andean germplasm, and Chile and Peru races in particular, exhibited useful genetic progress in these populations, providing lines with a large seed size, and so, an excellent market potential. The distribution of incompatibility between both gene pools (Mesoamerican and Andean) of the common bean was explored. Inter-gene pool populations provided lower means of inbred segregants than the mid-parent value. Therefore, a good option it would be select for large seed size according to a recurrent or congruity inbred-backcrossing selection programs. Analysis of allele markers frequencies in inter-gene populations showed segregation distortion with a higher than expected frequency of alleles from the Mesoamerican gene pool, many of which were fixed in the F7 lines. The presence of a great percentage of markers that showed segregation distortion in these populations (87%) indicated that this phenomenon can be amplified by using distance related common bean genotypes. In addition, a high percentage of heterozygotes for the Phs locus (for the seed storage protein phaseolin) was found, which suggest that the Andean homozygous TT could not be expressed in Mesoamerican genetic background due to the action of some form of female specific mechanisms that affected gene exchange between parental germplasm in inter-gene pool populations. The present work provides useful information in the establishment of large seed size germplasm that could have a great deal of interest among breeders and may offer some possibilities to exploit existing variation within and between common bean races. Southwestern Europe has been considered as a secondary centre of genetic diversity for the common bean. The dispersal of domesticated materials from their centres of origin provides an experimental system that reveals how human selection during cultivation and adaptation to novel environments affects the genetic composition. In this paper, our goal was to elucidate how distinct events could modify the structure and level of genetic diversity in the common bean. The genome-wide genetic composition was analysed at 42 microsatellite loci in individuals of 22 landraces of domesticated common bean from the Mesoamerican gene pool. The accessions were also characterised for phaseolin seed protein and for nine allozyme polymorphisms and phenotypic traits. One of this study's important findings was the complementary information obtained from all the polymorphisms examined. Most of the markers found to be potentially under the influence of selection were located in the proximity of previously mapped genes and quantitative trait loci (QTLs) related to important agronomic traits, which indicates that population genomics approaches are very efficient in detecting QTLs. As it was revealed by outlier simple sequence repeats, loci analysis with STRUCTURE software and multivariate analysis of phenotypic data, the landraces were grouped into three clusters according to seed size and shape, vegetative growth habit and genetic resistance. A total of 151 alleles were detected with an average of 4 alleles per locus and an average polymorphism information content of 0.31. Using a model-based approach, on the basis of neutral markers implemented in the software STRUCTURE, three clusters were inferred, which were in good agreement with multivariate analysis. Geographic and genetic distances were congruent with the exception of a few putative hybrids identified in this study, suggesting a predominant effect of isolation by distance. Genomic scans using both markers linked to genes affected by selection (outlier) and neutral markers showed advantages relative to other approaches, since they help to create a more complete picture of how adaptation to environmental conditions has sculpted the common bean genomes in southern Europe. The use of outlier loci also gives a clue about what selective forces gave rise to the actual phenotypes of the analysed landraces.
