Background. The accuracy of predictions of invasive species ranges is dependent on niche similarity between invasive and native populations and on our ability to identify the niche characteristics. With this work we aimed to compare the niche dynamics of two genetically related invasive populations of Vespa velutina (an effective predator of honeybees and wild pollinators), in two distinct climatic regions, one in central Europe and another one in the north-western Iberian Peninsula, and hence to identify uninvaded regions susceptible to invasion. Methods. Niche dynamics and shifts of V. velutina were assessed by comparing the environmental niches of the native and of the two invasive populations, using climatic, topographic and land use variables. We also ran reciprocal distribution models using different algorithms and records from both native and invasive ranges to compare model predictions and estimate which regions are at a greater risk of being invaded. Results. An apparent niche shift was detected in the population of the NW of Iberian Peninsula, where the species is living under environmental conditions different from the native niche. In central Europe, large suitable areas remain unoccupied. The fact that both invasive populations are well established, despite occupying environmentally distinct regions indicates that V. velutina has a high ability to successfully invade different environmental envelopes from those existing in its native range. For example, in north-western Iberian Peninsula the species is now thriving out of its native niche limits. Moreover, the large extent of still unoccupied environmental space with similar conditions to those used by the species in its native range suggests that there is still a large area of central and eastern Europe that can be potentially invaded by the species. Abstract: Vespa velutina nigrithorax, an Asian bee-hawking hornet, has been unintentionally introduced in south-western France before 2004 and is currently widely spreading across the country. Its arrival in northern Spain was reported in 2010. The potential invasion risk of the species is assessed using climatic suitability models. We used eight different modelling techniques within an ensemble forecast framework to show that the invasion success in south-western France could have been predicted using data from the native Asian range of the species, while we further used data from both the native and invaded ranges (including a recently established population in Korea) to better predict its potential invasion range across all continents. Results are discussed in terms of the interest of ecological niche modelling for invasion biology, realised niche of the invasive wasp, potential threats to native entomofauna and economic impacts of this new predator. A particular attention is paid to beekeeping activities that are nowadays already threatened by a wide panel of adversary factors. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Rationale: To provide an overview of the current status of cardiac multimodality imaging practices in Europe and radiologist involvement using data from the European Society of Cardiovascular Radiology (ESCR) MRCT-registry., Materials and Methods: Numbers on cardiac CT and MRI examinations were extracted from the MRCT-registry of the ESCR, entered between January 2011 and October 2023 (n = 432,265). Data collection included the total/annual numbers of examinations, indications, complications, and reporting habits., Results: Thirty-two countries contributed to the MRCT-registry, including 29 European countries. Between 2011 and 2022, there was a 4.5-fold increase in annually submitted CT examinations, from 3368 to 15,267, and a 3.8-fold increase in MRI examinations, from 3445 to 13,183. The main indications for cardiac CT were suspected coronary artery disease (CAD) (59%) and transcatheter aortic valve replacement planning (21%). The number of patients with intermediate pretest probability who underwent CT for suspected CAD showed an increase from 61% in 2012 to 82% in 2022. The main MRI indications were suspected myocarditis (26%), CAD (21%), and suspected cardiomyopathy (19%). Adverse event rates were very low for CT (0.3%) and MRI (0.7%) examinations. Reporting of CT and MRI examinations was performed mainly by radiologists (respectively 76% and 71%) and, to a lesser degree, in consensus with non-radiologists (19% and 27%, respectively). The remaining examinations (4.9% CT and 1.7% MRI) were reported by non-radiological specialties or in separate readings of radiologists and non-radiologists., Conclusions: Real-life data on cardiac imaging in Europe using the largest available MRCT-registry demonstrate a considerable increase in examinations over the past years, the vast majority of which are read by radiologists. Purpose: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are often driven by anaplastic lymphoma kinase fusions and less frequently by alternative fusions such as ROS1 . We describe the clinical characteristics, treatment approach, and outcome for a series of young patients with IMTs and ROS1 alterations., Methods: This was a retrospective, international, multicenter study analyzing young patients (younger than 21 years) with ROS1 -altered IMTs treated in 10 European referral centers between 2014 and 2022. Patients were included in the European pediatric Soft tissue sarcoma Study Group NRSTS-2005 protocol or registered in the Soft Tissue Sarcoma Registry. Primary surgery was recommended if a microscopic radical resection was feasible without mutilation. No standard systemic treatment protocol was available, but several medical options were recommended., Results: A total of 19 patients (median age 8.3 years) were included. Most patients had a biopsy at diagnosis (Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma Study [IRS] I; n = 2, IRS II; n = 1, IRS III biopsy; n = 11, IRS III resection; n = 3, IRS IV; n = 2). Twelve patients received neoadjuvant systemic therapy in first line (four received multiple treatments): high-dose steroids (n = 2), vinorelbine/vinblastine with methotrexate (n = 6), or ROS1 inhibitors (n = 8). After a median follow-up of 2.8 years (range, 0.2-13.4), seven patients developed an event. The 3-year event-free survival was 41% (95% CI, 11 to 71), and the 3-year overall survival was 100%., Conclusion: Outcome for ROS1 -altered IMTs appears excellent. A complete resection at diagnosis was often not feasible, and most patients needed neoadjuvant therapy. Patients who developed a tumor event could be cured with reinitiation of systemic therapy and/or surgery. This approach illustrates a switch in treatment philosophy moving from immediate, often mutilating, surgery to systemic (targeted) therapy as a bridge to more conservative surgery later in the treatment course.

Cardiac computed tomography (CT) and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are routine radiological examinations for diagnosis and prognosis of cardiac disease. The expected growth in cardiac radiology in the coming years will exceed the current scanner capacity and trained workforce. The European Society of Cardiovascular Radiology (ESCR) focuses on supporting and strengthening the role of cardiac cross-sectional imaging in Europe from a multi-modality perspective. Together with the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the ESCR has taken the initiative to describe the current status of, a vision for, and the required activities in cardiac radiology to sustain, increase and optimize the quality and availability of cardiac imaging and experienced radiologists across Europe. KEY POINTS: • Providing adequate availability for performing and interpreting cardiac CT and MRI is essential, especially with expanding indications. • The radiologist has a central role in non-invasive cardiac imaging examinations which encompasses the entire process from selecting the best modality to answer the referring physician's clinical question to long-term image storage. • Optimal radiological education and training, knowledge of the imaging process, regular updating of diagnostic standards, and close collaboration with colleagues from other specialties are essential., (© 2023. Background and Aims: Extracranial malignant rhabdoid tumours are tumours that mainly affect young children and have a poor prognosis. In 2014, the European Paediatric Soft-tissue sarcoma Study Group developed treatment recommendations consisting in intensive dose chemotherapy every 2 weeks using vincristine-doxorubicin-cyclophosphamide (VDCy) and ifosfamide-etoposide (IE) associated with early surgery and irradiation of tumour sites., Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on children treated in France by these new recommendations up to January 2019., Results: Thirty-five patients were identified. The primary tumour was in miscellaneous soft parts for 18 patients, in the kidney for 11 and in the liver for six. The median age at diagnosis was 17.5 months (range 1.2-198.2). Distant locations (metastatic or synchronous tumours) were present in 37.1% at diagnosis. SMARCB1 germline pathogenic variant was detected in 17.1% of patients. Overall tolerance was good, with 87-97% of theoretical chemotherapy cumulative doses actually delivered. The median interval between two courses was 18 days. Surgical resection was performed in 83% (19 R0, 7 R1 and 3 R2) and local radiotherapy in 49% of patients. After a median follow-up of 50.4 months (range 16.5-134.1), the 2-year overall and event-free survivals were 47.6% (95% confidence interval [CI] 30.2-63.1) and 42.9% (95% [CI] 26.5-58.3), respectively. On univariate analyses, localised disease and gross total resection were significantly associated with favourable outcomes., Conclusions: Intensive dose chemotherapy with VDCy/IE can be administrated with no remarkable short-term toxicity, including in infants. However, the outcome remains poor for patients without gross total resection and with metastatic or multifocal disease. Alcohol use disorder which includes alcohol abuse and dependence represents one of the leading risk factors for premature mortality in Europe and it is responsible of over 200 conditions, including neuropsychiatric disorders, chronic diseases, cancers and accidents leading to permanent disability. Alcohol use disorder represents the most common cause of liver damage in the Western world, with a wide spectrum of diseases ranging from steatosis, steatohepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis and cancer. The present clinical practice guidelines by the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (AISF) are focused on the current knowledge about epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of alcohol associated liver disease, aiming to provide practical recommendations on the management of this complex pathological condition., (Copyright © 2019 Editrice Gastroenterologica Italiana S.r.l.
