Background: Evidence on the association between smoke-free policies and per-capita cigarette consumption and mortality due to acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in Europe is limited. Hence, we aimed to assess this association and to evaluate which factors influence it., Methods: We performed an interrupted time series analysis, including 27 member states of the European Union and the UK, on per-capita cigarette consumption and AMI mortality.A multivariate meta-regression was used to assess the potential influence of other factors on the observed associations., Results: Around half of the smoke-free policies introduced were associated with a level or slope change, or both, of per-capita cigarette consumption and AMI mortality (17 of 35). As for cigarette consumption, the strongest level reduction was observed for the smoking ban issued in 2010 in Poland (rate ratio (RR): 0.47; 95% CI: 0.41, 0.53). Instead, the largest level reduction of AMI mortality was observed for the intervention introduced in 2012 in Bulgaria (RR: 0.38; 95% CI: 0.34, 0.42).Policies issued more recently or by countries with a lower human development index were found to be associated with a larger decrease in per-capita cigarette consumption. In addition, smoking bans applying to bars had a stronger inverse association with both cigarette consumption and AMI mortality., Conclusions: The results of our study suggest that smoke-free policies are effective at reducing per-capita cigarette consumption and AMI mortality. In the transformative landscape of healthcare, personalized medicine emerges as a pivotal shift, harnessing genetic, environmental and lifestyle data to tailor medical treatments for enhanced outcomes and cost efficiency. Central to its success is public engagement and consent to share health data amidst rising data privacy concerns. To investigate European public opinion on this paradigm, we executed a comprehensive cross-sectional survey to capture the general public's views on personalized medicine and data-sharing modalities, including digital tools and electronic records. The survey was distributed in eight major European Union countries and the results aim at guiding future policymaking and trust-building measures for secure health data exchange. This article delineates our methodological approach, whereby survey findings will be expounded in subsequent publications.

The objectives of the study were to calculate the standardised mortality rates (SMRs) for COVID-19 in European Union/European Economic Area countries plus the UK and Switzerland and to evaluate the correlation between SMRs and selected indicators in the first versus the subsequent waves until 23 June 2021. We used indirect standardisation (using Italy as the reference) to compute SMRs and considered 16 indicators of health and social well-being, health system capacity and COVID-19 response. The highest SMRs were in Belgium, the UK and Spain in the first wave (1.20-1.84) and in Hungary, Czechia and Slovakia in the subsequent waves (2.50-2.69). Human Development Index (HDI), life expectancy, urbanisation and healthcare expenditure had positive correlations with SMR in the first wave (rho=0.30-0.46), but negative correlations (rho=-0.67 to -0.47) in the subsequent waves. Retail/recreation mobility and transit mobility were negatively correlated with SMR in the first wave, while transit mobility was inversely correlated with SMR in the subsequent waves. The first wave hit most hard countries with high HDI, high life expectancy, high urbanisation, high health expenditures and high tourism. This pattern may reflect higher early community seeding and circulation of the virus. Conversely, in the subsequent waves, this pattern was completely inversed: countries with more resources and better health status did better than eastern European countries. Background: The list of genomic loci associated with multiple sclerosis (MS) susceptibility outside the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) in patients of Northern European (NE) ancestry has increased to 103. Despite the extraordinarily high MS prevalence in the isolated Sardinian population, the contribution of genetic risk factors to MS in Sardinia is largely not understood., Objective: The objective of this paper is to examine the relevance of non-MHC MS susceptibility variants in Sardinia., Methods: We examined a log-additive MS-specific genetic burden score (MSGB) using 110 NE-derived risk alleles in a dataset of 75 Sardinian cases, 346 Sardinian controls and 177 cases and 1967 controls from the United States (US)., Results: Sardinian cases demonstrate a heavier non-MHC MSGB load than Sardinian controls and US cases (p = 2E-06, p = 1E-06, respectively). Furthermore, Sardinian controls carry a heavier burden than US controls (p = 2E-14). Our results confirm the limited ability of the 110-SNP MSGB to predict disease status in Sardinia (AUROC = 0.629)., Conclusions: Risk alleles discovered in samples of NE ancestry are relevant to MS in Sardinia. Our results suggest a general enrichment of MS susceptibility alleles in Sardinians, encouraging the pursuit of further studies of MS in this population., (© The Author(s), 2015.)
