Wetland buffer zones (WBZs) are riparian areas that form a transition between terrestrial and aquatic environments and are well-known to remove agricultural water pollutants such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). This review attempts to merge and compare data on the nutrient load, nutrient loss and nutrient removal and/or retention from multiple studies of various WBZs termed as riparian mineral soil wetlands, groundwater-charged peatlands (i.e. fens) and floodplains. Two different soil types ('organic' and 'mineral'), four different main water sources ('groundwater', 'precipitation', 'surface runoff/drain discharge', and 'river inundation') and three different vegetation classes ('arboraceous', 'herbaceous' and 'aerenchymous') were considered separately for data analysis. The studied WBZs are situated within the temperate and continental climatic regions that are commonly found in northern-central Europe, northern USA and Canada. Surprisingly, only weak differences for the nutrient removal/retention capability were found if the three WBZ types were directly compared. The results of our study reveal that for example the nitrate retention efficiency of organic soils (53 ± 28%; mean ± sd) is only slightly higher than that of mineral soils (50 ± 32%). Variance in load had a stronger influence than soil type on the N retention in WBZs. However, organic soils in fens tend to be sources of dissolved organic N and soluble reactive P, particularly when the fens have become degraded due to drainage and past agricultural usage. The detailed consideration of water sources indicated that average nitrate removal efficiencies were highest for ground water (76 ± 25%) and lowest for river water (35 ± 24%). No significant pattern for P retention emerged; however, the highest absolute removal appeared if the P source was river water. The anther smuts of the genus Microbotryum are known from host plant species belonging to the Caryophyllaceae, Dipsacaceae, Lamiaceae, Lentibulariaceae, Montiaceae, and Primulaceae. Of these, the anther smuts on Caryophyllaceae, in particular on Silene spp., are best known because they include model organisms studied in many disciplines of fungal biology. For Microbotryum species parasitic on Caryophyllaceae, a high degree of host specificity was revealed and several cryptic species were described. In contrast, the host specificity within Microbotryum pinguiculae occurring in anthers of different Pinguicula species (Lentibulariaceae) has not been investigated in detail until now. The anther smuts on Pinguicula alpina, P. villosa, and P. vulgaris, on which M. pinguiculae was described, were analyzed using nuc rDNA ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 and nuc rDNA 28S D1-D2 sequences and morphology to determine if they belong to one polyphagous species or rather represent three host-specific species. The results of the morphological investigations revealed no decisive differences between the anther smuts on different Pinguicula species. However, genetic divergence and molecular phylogenetic analyses, which split the specimens according to host plant species, supported host specificity of the anther smuts on different Pinguicula species. Accordingly, in addition to Microbotryum pinguiculae s. str. on Pinguicula vulgaris, M. alpinum sp. nov. on P. alpina from Europe and M. liroi sp. nov. on P. villosa from Asia are described and illustrated.

Context: Sex steroids play a central role in breast cancer development., Objective: This study aimed to relate polymorphic variants in 36 candidate genes in the sex steroid pathway to serum concentrations of sex steroid hormones and SHBG., Design: Data on 700 genetic polymorphisms were combined with existing hormone assays and data on breast cancer incidence, within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) and the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) cohorts; significant findings were reanalyzed in the Multiethnic Cohort (MEC)., Setting and Participants: We analyzed data from a pooled sample of 3852 pre- and postmenopausal Caucasian women from EPIC and NHS and 454 postmenopausal women from MEC., Main Outcome Measures: Outcome measures were SHBG, testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEAS), androstenedione, estrone (E1), and estradiol (E2) as well as breast cancer risk., Results: Globally significant associations were found among pre- and postmenopausal women combined between levels of SHBG and the SHBG gene and between DHEAS and the FSHR and AKR1C3 genes. Among postmenopausal women, serum E1 and E2 were significantly associated with the genes CYP19 and FSHR, and E1 was associated with ESR1. None of the variants related to serum hormone levels showed any significant association with breast cancer risk., Conclusions: We confirmed associations between serum levels of SHBG and the SHBG gene and of E1 and E2 and the CYP19 and ESR1 genes. Novel associations were observed between FSHR and DHEAS, E1, and E2 and between AKR1C3 and DHEAS.

The stereotype content model (SCM) proposes potentially universal principles of societal stereotypes and their relation to social structure. Here, the SCM reveals theoretically grounded, cross-cultural, cross-groups similarities and one difference across 10 non-US nations. Seven European (individualist) and three East Asian (collectivist) nations (N=1,028) support three hypothesized cross-cultural similarities: (a) perceived warmth and competence reliably differentiate societal group stereotypes; (b) many out-groups receive ambivalent stereotypes (high on one dimension; low on the other); and (c) high status groups stereotypically are competent, whereas competitive groups stereotypically lack warmth. Data uncover one consequential cross-cultural difference: (d) the more collectivist cultures do not locate reference groups (in-groups and societal prototype groups) in the most positive cluster (high-competence/high-warmth), unlike individualist cultures. This demonstrates out-group derogation without obvious reference-group favouritism. The SCM can serve as a pancultural tool for predicting group stereotypes from structural relations with other groups in society, and comparing across societies.

Over the last four years, a community of researchers working on Grid and High Performance Computing technologies started discussing the barriers and opportunities that grid technologies must face and exploit for the development of health-related applications. This interest lead to the first Healthgrid conference, held in Lyon, France, on January 16th-17th, 2003, with the focus of creating increased awareness about the possibilities and advantages linked to the deployment of grid technologies in health, ultimately targeting the creation of a European/international grid infrastructure for health. The topics of this conference converged with the position of the eHealth division of the European Commission, whose mandate from the Lisbon Meeting was "To develop an intelligent environment that enables ubiquitous management of citizens' health status, and to assist health professionals in coping with some major challenges, risk management and the integration into clinical practice of advances in health knowledge." In this context "Health" involves not only clinical procedures but covers the whole range of information from molecular level (genetic and proteomic information) over cells and tissues, to the individual and finally the population level (social healthcare). Grid technology offers the opportunity to create a common working backbone for all different members of this large "health family" and will hopefully lead to an increased awareness and interoperability among disciplines. The first HealthGrid conference led to the creation of the Healthgrid association, a non-profit research association legally incorporated in France but formed from the broad community of European researchers and institutions sharing expertise in health grids. After the second Healthgrid conference, held in Clermont-Ferrand on January 29th-30th, 2004, the need for a "white paper" on the current status and prospective of health grids was raised. Over fifty experts from different areas of grid technologies, eHealth applications and the medical world were invited to contribute to the preparation of this document.

Epidemiological studies have identified osteoporosis as a disease of significant public health impact and have delineated numerous potential risk factors. Nevertheless, it has proven difficult to establish preventive strategies for several reasons. First, there has been no final agreement on the definition of osteoporosis, which has hampered efforts to characterize the magnitude of the problem as a whole. Secondly, as osteoporosis is a multifactorial chronic disorder, effective programs for risk assessment and intervention depend on the development of complex disease models. In summarizing the contributions of epidemiological studies to the current understanding of osteoporosis this review intends to outline the scientific background for the European Vertebral Osteoporosis Study (EVOS) and its successors.

Biochemical markers of bone turnover have been shown to provide valuable information for the diagnosis and monitoring of metabolic bone disease. However, these dynamic indexes are influenced by a number of factors that need to be clearly identified to improve their clinical usefulness. To evaluate the contributions of anthropometric, life style, and environmental variables on bone turnover, biochemical markers of bone metabolism were determined in a population-based sample of 580 adults, aged 50-81 yr (297 men and 283 women). Subjects were recruited during 14 consecutive months within the framework of the European Vertebral Osteoporosis Study. Serum total and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (S-BAP), serum C-terminal propeptide of type I collagen, and serum osteocalcin (S-OC) were measured as bone formation markers. Urinary total pyridinoline and deoxypyridinoline were included as bone resorption indexes. In females, serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 were significantly higher (P < 0.01) in summer (May-September) than in winter (October-April), whereas no significant differences were found in males. In both sexes, no seasonal changes were seen in serum PTH. In males, serum total alkaline phosphatase (P < 0.01), S-BAP (P < 0.001), and S-OC (P < 0.05) were significantly higher in winter than in summer. During the same period, females had higher values of S-BAP (P < 0.05), S-OC (P < 0.01), and urinary pyridinoline and deoxypyridinoline (P < 0.001, respectively). Univariate analyses of the effects of life style habits on markers of bone metabolism revealed that in females, regular alcohol consumption and current smoking led to a suppression of markers of bone turnover, whereas in males, only alcohol intake was associated with such changes. In contrast, physical activity was associated with higher levels of bone formation markers and reduced levels of bone resorption indexes in both sexes. As shown by multivariate regression analyses, seasonal variations accounted for more of the variability in most biomarkers (up to 12%) than any of the other anthropometric or life style factors except age. This effect may be attributed to subclinical vitamin D deficiency during the winter period, which is common in countries of the northern hemisphere. We conclude that seasonal variation contributes significantly to the biological variability of bone turnover and needs consideration when interpreting the results of bone marker measurements.
