Background: Severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is known to be associated with poor quality of life and increased risk of death when left untreated., Objectives: We sought to report the 1-year clinical outcomes of subjects treated by tricuspid transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) with the TriClip system (Abbott Cardiovascular) in a contemporary real-world setting., Methods: The bRIGHT (An Observational Real-World Study Evaluating Severe Tricuspid Regurgitation Patients Treated With the Abbott TriClip Device) postapproval study is a prospective, single-arm, open-label, multicenter postmarket registry conducted at 26 sites in Europe, with central event adjudication and echocardiographic core-laboratory assessment., Results: Enrolled subjects (n = 511) were elderly (79 ± 7 years) with significant comorbidities. A total of 88% had baseline massive or torrential TR, and 80% of subjects were in NYHA functional class III/IV. TR was reduced to moderate or less in 81% at 1 year. Significant improvements in NYHA functional class (21% to 75% I/II, P < 0.0001) and Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ) score (19 ± 26-point improvement, P <0.0001) were observed at 1 year. One-year mortality was significantly lower in subjects who achieved moderate or lower TR at 30 days; however, there was no difference in mortality among subjects who achieved moderate, mild, or trace TR at 30 days. In addition to TR reduction at 30 days, baseline serum creatinine and baseline right ventricular tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (RV TAPSE) were independently associated with mortality at 1 year (OR: 2.169; 95% CI: 1.494-3.147; P < 0.0001; OR: 0.636; 95% CI: 0.415-0.974; P = 0.0375). Mortality was not associated with baseline TR grade or with center volume., Conclusions: Tricuspid TEER using the TriClip system was safe and effective through 1 year for subjects with significant TR and advanced disease in a diverse real-world population. Background: Achondroplasia is the most common form of skeletal dysplasia, with serious comorbidities and complications that may occur from early infancy to adulthood, requiring lifelong management from a multidisciplinary team expert in the condition The European Achondroplasia Forum guiding principles of management highlight the importance of accurate diagnosis and timely referral to a centre specialised in the management of achondroplasia to fully support individuals with achondroplasia and their families, and to appropriately plan management. The European Achondroplasia Forum undertook an exploratory audit of its Steering Committee to ascertain the current situation in Europe and to understand the potential barriers to timely diagnosis and referral., Results: Diagnosis of achondroplasia was primarily confirmed prenatally (66.6%), at Day 0 (12.8%) or within one month after birth (12.8%). For suspected and confirmed cases of achondroplasia, a greater proportion were identified earlier in the prenatal period (87.1%) with fewer diagnoses at Day 0 (5.1%) or within the first month of life (2.6%). Referral to a specialist centre took place after birth (86.6%), predominantly within the first month, although there was a wide variety in the timepoint of referral between countries and in the time lapsed between suspicion or confirmed diagnosis of achondroplasia and referral to a specialist centre., Conclusions: The European Achondroplasia Forum guiding principles of management recommend diagnosis of achondroplasia as early as possible. If concerns are raised at routine ultrasound, second line investigation should be implemented so that the diagnosis can be reached as soon as possible for ongoing management. Clinical and radiological examination supported by molecular testing is the most effective way to confirm diagnosis of achondroplasia after birth. Referral to a centre specialised in achondroplasia care should be made as soon as possible on suspicion or confirmation of diagnosis. In countries or regions where there are no official skeletal dysplasia reference or specialist centres, priority should be given to their creation or recognition, together with incentives to improve the structure of the existing multidisciplinary team managing achondroplasia. Background: Treatment resistant depression (TRD) characterizes a subgroup of 10-30% of patients with major depressive disorder, and is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. A consensus treatment for TRD does not exist, which often leads to wide variations in treatment strategies. Real-world studies on treatment patterns and outcomes in TRD patients in Europe are lacking and could help elucidate current treatment strategies and their efficacy., Methods: This non-interventional cohort study of patients with TRD (defined as treatment failure on ≥2 oral antidepressants given at adequate dose and duration) with moderate to severe depression collected real-world data on treatment patterns and outcomes in several European countries. Patients were started on a new treatment for depression according to routine clinical practice., Results: Among 411 patients enrolled, after 6 months, only 16.7% achieved remission and 73.5% showed no response. At Month 12, while 19.2% achieved remission and 69.2% showed no response, 33.3% of those in remission at Month 6 were no longer in remission. Pharmacological treatments employed were heterogenous; 54 different drugs were recorded at baseline, and the top 5 treatment types according to drug classes accounted for 40.0% of patients. Even though remission rates were very low, at Month 12, 60.0% of patients had not changed treatment since enrolment., Conclusions: The heterogeneity of treatments highlights a lack of consensus. Moreover, despite low response rates, patients often remained on treatments for substantial periods of time. Background: Treatment resistant depression (TRD; failure to respond to ≥2 treatments) affects ~20% of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Real-world data could help describe patient characteristics and TRD disease burden, to assess the unmet needs of TRD patients in Europe., Methods: This observational study collected data from adults with moderate to severe TRD initiating a new treatment for depression, according to local standards of care. At baseline, socio-demographic characteristics, medical history, prior and current treatments were recorded. Disease severity, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), functionality and productivity were assessed., Results: Overall, 411 eligible patients were enrolled across seven European countries. Mean (standard deviation [SD]) patient age was 51.0 (10.8) years; 62.3% were female. Long-term sick leave was reported by 19.0% of patients; 30.2% were unemployed. The mean (SD) duration of the current episode was 2.6 (3.9) years. At baseline, mean (SD) HRQoL scores for EuroQoL 5-dimension 5-level (UK tariff) and EQ-Visual Analog Scale were 0.41 (0.25) and 41.1 (18.7), respectively. The Work Productivity and Activity Impairment questionnaire demonstrated mean (SD) absenteeism of 57.0% (44.9%) and presenteeism of 54.7% (29.5%); mean (SD) overall work impairment was 60.5% (29.9%)., Limitations: Key limitations are small cohort size, absence of a control group and generalizability to countries with different healthcare models., Conclusions: TRD patients had a high disease burden, low HRQoL and reduced function and productivity, with a substantial proportion unable to work. The breastfeeding behavior of women is influenced by social, demographic and cultural factors, yet little is known about the influence of migration and acculturation. A systematic search using the electronic databases LIVIVO and MEDLINE (PubMed) was conducted followed by a manual search in the bibliographies of all selected articles. Quantitative studies from industrialized countries, published from 01.01.2014 to 30.05.2018, in English or German were included. A total of 77 studies could be identified; 17 of them met the required inclusion criteria. Migrant mothers, excluding those from Southeast Asia, tended to have a higher breastfeeding prevalence than mothers without a migrant background. In addition, migrant women in Southern Europe, Ireland, and Taiwan were observed to have a longer breastfeeding period, whereas migrant women in Canada and women of non-Scandinavian origin in northern Europe showed shorter breastfeeding duration. Background: The members of the Task Force on Contact Dermatitis and the Task Force on Occupational Dermatoses of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV), of the European Dermatology Forum (EDF), and the members of the UEMS Section of Dermatology-Venereology (UEMS-EBDV) we want to vindicate the fundamental role that the specialist in Dermatology has in the diagnosis and management of Immuno-mediated /allergic Diseases., Objective: In disagreement with the blueprint paper of the UEMS section of Allergology (2013), in which dermatologists are excluded from one of their core activities it was decided to write this consensus paper., Discussion: The skin occupies a crucial place in the broad spectrum of allergic diseases; there is no other organ with such a multitude of different clinical conditions mediated by so many pathogenetic immune mechanisms. Subsequently, dermatologists play a fundamental role in the management of immune-mediated diseases including among others contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, urticaria and angioedema or cutaneous adverse drug, food and arthropod reactions. The essential role of dermatology in the diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive management of immune mediated /allergic diseases which is crucial for patient management is justified from both the academic and professional point of view., Conclusion: Based on the best care of the patient with cutaneous immune allergic disease a multidisciplinary approach is desirable and the dermatologist has a pivotal role in patient management. Aim: Post-traumatic endophthalmitis is one of the most severe complications occurring in 2-17% after open globe injuries. Early intravenous antibiotics may minimise the risk of post-traumatic endophthalmitis. The design of a new study to evaluate the role of an additional intravitreal antibiotic injection in the prevention of post-traumatic endophthalmitis is presented in this paper., Patients and Methods: A prospective, multicentre, randomised controlled study was designed. Patients with penetrating or perforating eye injuries will be included up to the year 2010. The wound closure and IOFB (intraocular foreign body) removal must be performed within 24 hours after the trauma. After grouping into low risk (e. g., metallic IOFB) or high risk patients (e. g., agricultural trauma, organic IOFB) each patient will be randomised for 1) intravenous moxifloxacin only or 2) intravenous moxifloxacin plus intravitreal 1 mg Vancomycin plus 2.25 mg [DOSAGE ERROR CORRECTED] Ceftazidim., Results: 17 European Departments of Ophthalmology have agreed to participate. The rate of post-traumatic endophthalmitis in each group will be statistically compared. The follow-up period of this study will last 6 months., Conclusion: Other Departments of Ophthalmology are invited to join the TEPT.

We report a dinucleotide repeat polymorphism in the 3' area of the mitochondrial control region. The fragments obtained using a new primer set could be reliably separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) using nondenaturing gels. A total of five alleles [(CA)3 to (CA)7] were detected on silver-stained gels. The 90 bp product corresponds to allele 5. Samples from one African and three European populations were characterized. Significant differences could be demonstrated as to the incidence of single alleles and allele distributions in different populations. These differences were found between the three European and one African Bantu population. For specific forensic questions the mitochondrial CA repeat is well suited. Gene diversities in populations of Germany, Hungary, the Russian Federation and Cameroon were 0.36, 0.40, 0.34, 0.52, respectively.
