Aim: Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is increasingly used to monitor pandemics. In this manuscript, we review methods and limitations of WBE, as well as their online dashboards. Materials & methods: Online dashboards were retrieved using PubMed and search engines, and annotated for timeliness, availability of English version, details on SARS-CoV-2 sublineages, normalization by population and PPMoV load, availability of case/hospitalization count charts and of raw data for export. Results: We retrieved 51 web portals, half of them from Europe. Africa is represented from South Africa only, and only seven portals are available from Asia. Conclusion: WBS provides near-real-time cost-effective monitoring of analytes across space and time in populations. However, tremendous heterogeneity still persists in the SARS-CoV-2 WBE literature.

While the use of pesticides continues to rise worldwide, our understanding of the pervasiveness of associated contamination and the health risks humans may be exposed to remain limited to small samples size, and based on small geographic scales, the exposed population, or the pesticide types. Using our recent mapping of global pesticide use, we quantify three complementary health risk metrics for 92 active ingredients: (i) the pesticide hazard load (PHL); (ii) the population exposure (PE); and (iii) the human intake relative to the acceptable dose (INTR). We integrated these metrics into the pesticide health risk index (PHRI) to assess the standing of 133 nations against the global averages of PHL and PE and the acceptable levels of INTR using data of 2015 (PHRI > 1 indicates a concern). We found that some low-toxicity ingredients have PHL values equivalent to high-toxicity ones, and hence neglecting low-toxicity ingredients may cause biases in risk assessments. The geography of PHL, PE, and INTR show hotspots across the Americas, East and South Asia, and Europe, but with the EU27 countries generally showing lower PHL than other countries possibly due to strict governance on pesticide use. By our measure, about 1.7 billion people (24% of the world population) reside in close proximity to where pesticide applications are greater than 100 kg-a.i. km -2  year -1 ; about 2.3 billion people (32% of the world population) may exceed the acceptable pesticide intake and about 1.1 billion (15% of the world population) may exceed this by 10 fold. We identified 36 countries with PHRI > 1 and 6 countries with PHRI > 5; of these countries, 10 belong to lower-middle and low income economies. Our analyses show that proximity exposure to pesticides may be more widespread than revealed in occupational studies, and therefore assessments of potential health effects over wider scales may be needed., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare no competing interests., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Torquetenovirus (TTV) viremia has been associated with increased mortality risk in the elderly population. This work aims to investigate TTV viremia as a potential biomarker of immunosenescence. We compared levels of circulating TTV in 1813 participants of the MARK-AGE project, including human models of delayed (offspring of centenarians [GO]) and premature (Down syndrome [DS]) immunosenescence. The TTV load was positively associated with age, cytomegalovirus (CMV) antibody levels, and the Cu/Zn ratio and negatively associated with platelets, total cholesterol, and total IgM. TTV viremia was highest in DS and lowest in GO, with intermediate levels in the SGO (spouses of GO) and RASIG (Randomly Recruited Age-Stratified Individuals From The General Population) populations. In the RASIG population, TTV DNA loads showed a slight negative association with CD3+T-cells and CD4+T-cells. Finally, males with ≥4log TTV copies/mL had a higher risk of having a CD4/CD8 ratio<1 than those with lower viremia (odds ratio [OR] = 2.85, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.06-7.62), as well as reduced CD3+ and CD4+T-cells compared to males with lower replication rates (<4log), even after adjusting for CMV infection. In summary, differences in immune system preservation are reflected in the models of delayed and premature immunosenescence, displaying the best and worst control over TTV replication, respectively. In the general population, TTV loads were negatively associated with CD4+ cell counts, with an increased predisposition for an inverted CD4/CD8 ratio for individuals with TTV loads ≥4log copies/mL, thus promoting an immune risk phenotype., (© The Author(s) 2019. Although less frequently than in older women, about 15% of invasive epithelial ovarian cancer may occur in young women, for whom preservation of fertility potential is an important clinical goal. We reviewed the published evidences from the European literature on the role of conservative surgery in women with invasive epithelial ovarian cancer. Three reports were identified from the Italian and French literature; the data were analyzed together with our own experience in terms of relapse rate, relapse in the preserved ovary, survival, and fertility outcome. A total of 152 conservative surgeries were reported: 88 patients with stage IA, 2 with stage IB, 51 with stage IC, 2 with stage II, 3 with stage IIIA, and 6 with stage IIIC. Relapses occurred in 18/152 patients (11.8%) and involved the preserved ovary in 11 cases (7%). Fifty-three pregnancies were recorded with 38 uneventful term deliveries, 2 ectopic pregnancies, 6 spontaneous abortions, 4 terminations, and 2 with unknown outcome. Nine patients (5.9%) have died of disease. These findings confirm that young women with stage I invasive epithelial ovarian cancer may receive a successful treatment of their disease without sacrificing fertility.
