ATHLETIC clubs ,VOLUNTEER service - Abstract
The purpose of the article is to explain the differences in public policy for sports clubs among European countries. It uses empirical materials from the 'Social Inclusion and Volunteering in Sports Clubs in Europe' project. The comparison is based on the theory of opportunity structure. The political and institutional context of sports clubs provides opportunities as well as constraints within which sports clubs can act. The theories of welfare state typology are used to explain the differences between sports club policies. The analysis includes England, Denmark, Switzerland, Poland and Spain, which 'represent' five types of welfare state. The analysis shows that there are both significant similarities in the public policy for sports clubs among the five countries, but also differences arising from the type of welfare state that characterises each country in particular. Based on the multi-dimensional framework of Damanpour and Schneider [2006. "Phases of the Adoption of Innovation in Organizations: Effects of Environment, Organization and Top Managers 1." British Journal of Management 17 (3): 215–236], the purpose of this study is to identify the managerial, organizational and environmental determinants of social innovation, depicted in terms of the amount of special initiatives initiated for specific target groups. while considering the initiative's type (i.e. administrative versus technical). A lognormal double hurdle model, on a sample of approximately 5000 voluntary sports clubs (VSCs) from 9 different European countries, indicates significant effects for each level. In particular, positive managerial attitudes and public support through both financial and infrastructural resources are important predictors for a VSC to adopt special initiatives towards a target group. Furthermore, differences between determinants of administrative and technical initiatives are found. These results call for measures in terms of resource support from sports policy-makers at European, national and regional levels, along with the need for VSCs to meet the demands from neglected target groups. • Dedicated and integrated subcooling systems for CO 2 booster plants are analyzed. • A supermarket of 41 kW at low and 140 kW at medium temperature is considered. • Systems are simulated in 282 locations in Europe and 395 in Asia. • R-290 dedicated subcooling offers benefits for warm and hot regions. • Integrated subcooling reduces energy consumption in tempered climates. Energy improvements offered by dedicated and integrated mechanical subcooling systems in CO 2 booster systems for supermarket applications are analyzed here through the use of thermodynamic models close to reality. Using a reference supermarket with 41 kW and 140 kW thermal loads at low and medium temperature, respectively, and considering as state-of-the-art system the CO 2 booster with parallel compressor and flash gas by-pass, it has been concluded that both systems allow to reduce energy consumption. However, its operation is highly dependent on environmental conditions. The dedicated mechanical subcooling system offers annual energy reductions for tempered places from 1.5% to 2.9%, for warm between 2.9% and 3.4% and for hot from 3.0% to 5.1%. The integrated subcooling system obtains reductions between 3.1% and 4.0% for cold regions, from 1.4% to 2.9% for tempered, from 2.9% to 3.4% for warm and from 1.3% to 2.4% for hot regions. Regional income inequality in Latin Europe (France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal) showed a distinctive pattern between 1870 and 1950. Data about population on a decadal basis and Gross Domestic Product (gdp) for 171 regions (84 French
départements , 22 Italianregioni , 18 Portuguesedistritos , and 49 Spanishprovincias ) shows that regional inequality increased from 1870 to 1910 but gradually flattened out thereafter until 1950. Current regional disparities in per-capita income throughout Latin Europe are essentially the result of a long-term evolution that traces back to the origins of modern economic growth. Moreover, this study shows the emergence of the core–periphery pattern that characterizes much of Latin Europe today. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Passive dispensers are the most widely used dispensers to control the European grapevine moth, Lobesia botrana (Denis & Schiffermüller) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), by mating disruption (MD). Although their efficacy is well-proven, efforts are needed to reduce the use of pheromone without compromising efficacy and to allow lower MD costs. For this purpose, two different widely employed dispenser types in Europe against this pest (Ampoule and Rope dispensers) were evaluated in the field to verify their performance (emission rates and efficacy) in relation to weather conditions. Their release profiles were studied by extracting and quantifying the residual pheromone load over time by gas chromatography. Dispensers' performance in relation to weather conditions was then assessed by correlating the daily emission rates with the mean daily values of several of these variables. Although both dispenser types were efficient in controlling L. botrana populations and reducing fruit damage, their pheromone content and their release rates differed at the end of the crop cycle. The Ampoule dispensers emitted lower amounts of pheromone throughout the study period, whereas the Rope dispensers' emissions were weather-dependent, with higher emission rates at higher mean temperatures and wind speeds. Our results showed that the current commercial MD dispensers could be improved by adjusting their release rates to better reflect actual pheromone requirements. [Display omitted] • Both passive dispensers performed efficiently controlling L. botrana populations and reducing fruit damage. • Ampoule dispensers keep the efficacy with lower emission rates and can be more suitable for late cultivars. • Rope dispensers' emission was higher at higher mean temperatures and wind speeds. • Commercial mating disruption dispensers can be improved by reducing pheromone waste. To support development of effective policy and action for child and adolescent mental health (CAMH), key national and/or regional information on monitoring, evaluation, obstacles and opportunities in CAMH from 15 European countries was collected. National expert groups in each country were created to collect the data and complete a specially designed questionnaire. The data highlight that 1) the implementation and outcomes of CAMH policies and action plans are not assessed systematically in Europe, 2) prevalence data on positive mental health, mental disorders and ask, and vulnerable populations is heterogeneous and patchy across Europe, 3) children and adolescents are rarely involved in decision-making processes affecting CAMH practices, 4) CAMH issues are not included in all relevant higher education qualifications, 5) budgets dedicated to CAMH issues are not identifiable, specific or sufficient in the long term, and 6) stakeholders and the general public are not considered to be widely aware of the determinants of CAMH. Abstract: As a result of the ban of the CFC fluids in 2000 and the future limitation of HCFC fluids, which manufacture limit is the year 2010, refrigerant producers have been working to develop different mixtures, mainly based on HFC fluids, which emulate the properties of the former refrigerants used in refrigeration plants. At the moment, the HFC-404A and the HFC-507A are the more widely used fluids in Europe as replacement of the CFC-502 in plants operating at low temperatures. This work presents the experimental evaluation, from an energy point of view, of both refrigerants in the same refrigeration plant, which corresponds to a double-stage vapour compression plant driven by a compound compressor. The characterization was made for an evaporating temperature range between −36 and −20°C for a constant condensing temperature of 40°C. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Diptera: Drosophilidae), has become a key pest for soft fruits and cherries in Europe in less than a decade since the first outbreak in 2007. Although this pest's passive dispersal ability has been observed over more than 1400 km in 1 year, active spread has not yet been extensively studied. A mark−release−recapture (MRR) method based on protein-marked flies was employed to determine the flight capacity of D. suzukii. Sterile marked flies were released and recaptured in a trap grid at increasing distances from 10 to 250 m from the releasing point to study flight distance during periods ranging from 3 h to 1 week. MRR experiments were replicated in the presence and absence of host fruits to study how they could affect dispersal behavior. The dispersal capacity of the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann (Diptera: Tephritidae) was also studied under the same conditions. The results showed a low dispersal ability for D. suzukii, with a daily flight distance below 100 m with no predominant wind. The implications on natural dispersion and control methods based on attractants are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To evaluate the potential association between occupational exposure to chlorinated and petroleum solvents and mycosis fungoides (MF). Methods: A questionnaire on lifetime job history was administered to 100 patients diagnosed with MF and 2846 controls. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated as the measure of the association between exposure to each specific solvent and MF. Results: In the total sample and in men, cases and controls did not differ in relation to exposure to any of the solvents studied. In women, an association with MF was seen for the highest level of estimated exposure to perchloroethylene (OR = 11.38; 95% confidence interval: 1.04 to 124.85) and for exposure less than the median to kerosene/fuel/gasoil (OR = 8.53; 95% confidence interval: 1.11 to 65.62). Conclusions: These results do not provide conclusive evidence that exposure to solvents may increase risk of MF because they were not found in men. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The European Regulation no 2037/2000 has banned manufacturing HCFC refrigerants from January 1st 2010, although its use is allowed up to 2015 if the fluids come from a recycling process. This situation creates the need for developing new working fluids to replace the HCFC in the refrigeration plants now in operation. Among all the HCFCs the R22 is the most widely used in a wide range of applications, especially in air conditioning. This work presents an on-site experimental study of the R22 replacement by two possible substitutes, the HFC-417A and the HFC-422D, in a water chiller in which the energy performance was evaluated. This chiller is part of the centralized HVAC system of a lecture room building at the Jaume I University of Castellón, Spain. This communication compares and analyses main operation parameters of the chiller when operating with each refrigerant in real conditions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Objective: We sought to study the association between occupational sun exposure and mycosis fungoides (MF,), a peripheral T-cell lymphoma. Subjects and Methods: A European multicenter case-control study including seven rare cases (one being ME) was conducted between 1995 and 1997. From the 118 accepted cases, 104 were interviewed, of which 76 were definite cases. Population controls were selected randomly from the regions of case ascertainment. Information based on occupational experiences was coded according to industry types. A job exposure matrix was created according to the expected exposure to sunlight. Results: Once exposures to aromatic halogenated hydrocarbons were eliminated (odds ratio = 2.3; 95% confidence interval = 0.9-6.2), a high MF risk was associated with exposures to solar radiation. Conclusion: It would appear that workers exposed to sunlight have a higher risk of ME. However, this factor is not the only one involved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mycosis fungoides (MF) is a rare disease with an unknown etiology. Its distribution suggests that occupational exposures may play a role. In the present study, we searched for occupational factors associated with MF. A European multicenter case-control study on seven rare cancers, including MF, was conducted from 1995 to 1997. Patients between 35 and 69 years of age diagnosed with MF (n = 134) were identified and their diagnoses were checked by a reference pathologist who classified 83 cases as definitive, 35 cases as possible, and 16 cases as not histologically verified. Of the 118 histologically verified cases, 104 were interviewed of which 76 were definitive cases. As controls, we selected population controls and colon cancer controls to serve all seven case groups. Altogether, 833 colon cancer controls and 2071 population controls were interviewed The response rate was 91.5% for cases (76 of the 83 definitive cases), and 66.6% for controls. A high risk of MF for men was observed in the industries of other non-metallic mineral products (Odds Ratio [OR] 5.3, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.7-16.2) and of wholesale trade (OR 3.6, 95% CI = 1.3-10.5). A high risk was found for female employees in the sector of pulp paper manufacture (OR 14.4, 95% CI = 2.2-95.1). The male occupations with the highest risks were glass formers, potters, and ceramics workers (OR 17.9, 95% CI = 5.4-59.4) and technical salesmen (OR 8.6, 95% CI = 2.4-30.8). For women, the occupations associated with the highest risks were government executives (OR 4.8, 95% CI = 1.0-22.6) and railway and road vehicles loaders (OR 3.9, 95% CI = 1.0-14.0). The results suggest that some occupational factors are associated with MF. Working as glass formers, pottery, and ceramics workers carried the highest risk, and these findings deserve further attention and replication. Females working in the paper and pulp industries may also be exposed to carcinogens of relevance to MF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Bearded vulture ( Gypaetus barbatus ) populations are declining worldwide primarily due to anthropogenic factors. A captive breeding program has been established in Spain, a country with one of the largest free-living populations in Europe, to further enhance the conservation efforts of this emblematic species. However, captive vulture populations can be exposed to different risks through food, such as drug residues and antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacteria. Health surveillance of species involved in captive breeding programs is important to face introduction of healthy animals in situ and to obtain baseline clinical data. The objective of this study was to assess the general health status of bearded vultures held in captivity in Catalonia (northeastern Spain) by carrying out hematologic, biochemical, toxicologic, and bacteriologic analyses. A total of 16 bearded vultures were sampled; the data obtained from one vulture, with a chronic tibiotarsal fracture, were excluded from the statistical analysis. Hematologic and biochemical parameters of the bearded vultures were mostly within the range of standard values as stated in previous studies. Basal feather and serum corticosterone levels were analyzed and described for the first time in this species. A total of 15 Escherichia coli isolates were obtained that were resistant to fluoroquinolones (80%), tetracycline (60%), trimethoprim and ampicillin (40%), sulfamethoxazole (33%), and colistin (20%), with 40% of them being multidrug resistant. Three of 15 isolates were carriers of the mcr- 1 gene. Only the injured bird previously treated with enrofloxacin was positive for fluoroquinolone residues. Periodic monitoring for the presence of AMR bacteria would be recommended in captive breeding programs as a preventive action to establish future therapies.

Objectives: Mycosis Fungoides (MF) is a rare disease with an occurrence indicating that occupational exposures may play a role. To estimate the association between MF and occupational exposures as measured by means of an job-exposure matrix (JEM)., Methods: A European multicenter case-control study was conducted from 1995 to 1997 and included seven rare cancers, one of which was MF. Patients between 35 and 69 years of age, diagnosed with MF (n=140), were recruited and the diagnoses were checked by a reference pathologist who classified 83 cases as definite, 35 cases as possible and 22 cases as not accepted. Among the 118 accepted cases, 104 cases were interviewed, of which 76 were definite cases. We selected population controls and colon cancer controls to serve all seven case groups. Altogether 833 colon cancer controls and 2071 population controls were interviewed. Based on the reported occupational experiences, a team of industrial hygiene specialists identified five potential exposures and developed an JEM. This JEM was used to estimate the odds ratios (OR) for MF as a function of these exposures. The JEM included aromatic and/or halogenated hydrocarbons (AAHs), chrome (VI) and its salts, electromagnetic radiations, silica and pesticides., Results: Exposures to AHHs (OR 6.3, C.I 2.4-16.7 for male) were associated with a high MF risk., Conclusions: The study supports the hypothesis that some MFs have an occupational etiology but only a small fraction of exposed workers are apparently susceptible since the disease is so rare.

Mycosis fungoides (MF) is a rare disease with an unknown aetiology, although it has been suggested that infections may play a role. The present study investigates whether infections, atopic disorders and some other diseases are risk indicators for MF. A European multicentre case-control study involving seven rare cancers, including MF, was conducted from 1995 to 1998. Patients between 35 and 69 years of age diagnosed with MF (n = 140) were recruited, and the diagnoses were verified by a reference pathologist, who classified 83 cases as definitive and 35 cases as possible; 22 cases were not accepted. Of the 118 accepted cases, 104 patients were interviewed (including 76 definitive cases and 28 possible cases). These 76 definitive cases were used for this study. A common set of controls to serve all case groups were interviewed, representing a total of 4574 controls. The latter included 1008 colon cancer patients and 3566 subjects selected from population registers. Information on infections, skin pathology and clinical history 5 years before the diagnosis of MF was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) derived from logistic regression-modelling, which included gender, age and country. The highest ORs for MF were found in patients who reported a history of psoriasis 5 years before MF was diagnosed (OR 7.2, 95% CI: 3.6-14.5). Urticaria had an OR of 1.4 (95% CI: 0.6-3.6). Infections and atopic diseases were not closely associated with MF. Some diseases correlated to MF. Whether this has a causal background or reflects early diagnostic uncertainty is not known.
