The 2018 drought was one of the worst European droughts of the twenty-first century in terms of its severity, extent and duration. The effects of the drought could be seen in a reduction in harvest yields in parts of Europe, as well as an unprecedented browning of vegetation in summer. Here, we quantify the effect of the drought on net ecosystem exchange (NEE) using five independent regional atmospheric inversion frameworks. Using a network of atmospheric CO2 mole fraction observations, we estimate NEE with at least monthly and 0.5° × 0.5° resolution for 2009–2018. We find that the annual NEE in 2018 was likely more positive (less CO2 uptake) in the temperate region of Europe by 0.09 ± 0.06 Pg C yr−1 (mean ± s.d.) compared to the mean of the last 10 years of −0.08 ± 0.17 Pg C yr−1, making the region close to carbon neutral in 2018. Similarly, we find a positive annual NEE anomaly for the northern region of Europe of 0.02 ± 0.02 Pg C yr−1 compared the 10-year mean of −0.04 ± 0.05 Pg C yr−1. In both regions, this was largely owing to a reduction in the summer CO2 uptake. The positive NEE anomalies coincided spatially and temporally with negative anomalies in soil water. These anomalies were exceptional for the 10-year period of our study. Satellite retrievals for column CO2 with better spatial and temporal sampling are expected to improve the current surface flux estimates of CO2 via inverse techniques. However, the spatial scale mismatch between remotely sensed CO2 and current generation inverse models can induce representation errors, which can cause systematic biases in flux estimates. This study is focused on estimating these representation errors associated with utilization of satellite measurements in global models with a horizontal resolution of about 1 degree or less. For this we used simulated CO2 from the high resolution modeling framework WRF-VPRM, which links CO2 fluxes from a diagnostic biosphere model to a weather forecasting model at 10×10 km2 horizontal resolution. Sub-grid variability of column averaged CO2, i.e. the variability not resolved by global models, reached up to 1.2 ppm with a median value of 0.4 ppm. Statistical analysis of the simulation results indicate that orography plays an important role. Using sub-grid variability of orography and CO2 fluxes as well as resolved mixing ratio of CO2, a linear model can be formulated that could explain about 50% of the spatial patterns in the systematic (bias or correlated error) component of representation error in column and near-surface CO2 during day- and night-times. These findings give hints for a parameterization of representation error which would allow for the representation error to taken into account in inverse models or data assimilation systems. The fentanyl HCl iontophoretic transdermal system (ITS) is a compact, needle-free, pre-programmed patient-controlled analgesic system that was developed to address limitations to existing therapies for postoperative pain management. A randomized, controlled trial was conducted in 11 European countries to evaluate the efficacy and safety of postoperative pain control using fentanyl ITS compared with a standard regimen of morphine provided by an intravenous patient-controlled analgesia (IV PCA) pump. This article summarizes results from Nurse Ease-of-Care Questionnaires that were completed to assess the convenience and ease of use of each pain management modality from the perspective of the nurse. Nurses' ratings of patient-care tasks associated with each pain management system were significantly more favourable for fentanyl ITS than for morphine IV PCA. Background: A previous analysis of undesirable events (UEvs), reported to four major companies following the use of hair-colouring products in Europe, showed that the reporting rates were stable for both oxidative and direct hair-colouring products over the period 2003-2006., Objectives: In order to verify the impact of risk management measures implemented since 2006, as well as the impact of a new Commission Regulation (No 1223/2009), the same four companies analysed cosmetovigilance data collected over an additional four-year period (2014-2017). The objective was to determine whether there was any time effect, country effect, or product type effect, as well as identify risk factors., Materials and Methods: Each company collected reports of alleged UEvs, undesirable effects (UEfs) and serious undesirable effects (SUEs) for their products in their key European markets, and calculated the respective reporting rates (number of events/million units sold). A detailed analysis was performed on allergic contact dermatitis-type events., Results: The reporting rates for alleged UEvs and allergic-type UEfs associated with hair-colouring products remained stable over the four-year period, although a statistically significant decrease was observed for some companies. No time effect on SUEs was observed for three companies but a statistically significant decrease in SUEs was observed for one company. Black henna tattoos remained a major risk factor regarding SUEs due to hair dyes., Conclusion: The reporting rates of undesirable events, including contact allergy-type events, were stable over time. This was true for oxidative and direct hair dyes, for both home use and professional exposure scenarios.
