The article focuses on European cultural heritage. Lectio was introduced as a means of gaining knowledge by studying the text of a selected topic given by a master. Translatio studiorum stands as one of the most important and visible links between the old and the new. Quaestio is the second exercise of reason that took its place at the center of the medieval university. Disputatio is an outward sign of autonomy with regard to doctrinal approaches and scientific curiosity. Summa stands for the need for integrating knowledge that was characterized by conciseness, systemization and the tendency toward completeness.
