People affected by bipolar disorders experience alternating states of depression with episodes of mania or hypomania. This mental can lead to a poor handling of daily routines, can worsen personal relationships, and often can be life-threatening. This preliminary study aims at investigating how the autonomic nervous system, in terms of electrodermal activity, responds to specific controlled emotional stimuli in bipolar patients. More specifically, we present here a method to deploy the analysis of ElectroDermal Activity (EDA) to discriminate clinical mood states. EDA was analyzed by using a deconvolution method to separate tonic from phasic components. The three subjects recruited and the experimental protocol used here is part of the European project PSYCHE. Preliminary results show that the bipolar mood states can be related to electrodermal tonic activity.

Objective: To present criteria for pathophysiological interpretation of motor and sensory nerve conduction studies and for pathophysiological classification of polyneuropathies suggested by a group of European neurophysiologists., Methods: Since 1992 seven neurophysiologists from six European countries have collected random samples of their electrodiagnostic examinations for peer review medical audit in the ESTEEM (European Standardized Telematic tool to Evaluate Electrodiagnostic Methods) project. Based on existing criteria in the literature, the experience with a patient material of 572 peer reviewed electrodiagnostic examinations, and productive discussions between the physicians at workshops, the collaboration has produced a set of criteria now routinely used at the centres involved in the project., Results: The first part of the paper considers pathophysiology of individual nerve segments. For interpretation of motor and sensory nerve conduction studies, figures showing change in amplitude versus change in conduction velocity/distal latency and change in F-wave frequency versus change in F-wave latency are presented. The suggested boundaries delimit areas corresponding to normal, axonal, demyelinated, or neuropathic nerve segments. Criteria for motor conduction block in upper and lower extremities are schematically depicted using the parameters CMAP amplitude and CMAP duration. The second part of the paper suggests criteria for classification of polyneuropathies into axonal, demyelinating, or mixed using the above-mentioned criteria., Conclusions: The suggested criteria are developed during many years of collaboration of different centres and may be useful for standardization in clinical neurophysiology., Significance: Consistent interpretation of nerve conduction studies is an important step in optimising diagnosis and treatment of nerve disorders.

Objective: To review the historical developments leading to the modern understanding of central area physiological features., Methods: Important scientific writings related to stimulation and function of the central area were studied, beginning with the first electrolytic battery description., Results: Volta's description of the electrolytic battery provided a reliable tool for mapping cortical function. However, 70 years elapsed before Fritsch and Hitzig convincingly demonstrated an excitable cortex and challenged Flourens' theories of cerebral function. The localization of sensory and motor cortical representations was hampered by difficulties in interpreting responses to stimulation in animals and in relating animal data to the human brain. Nevertheless, by the beginning of the 20th century, the evidence for a separate sensory and motor gyrus within the central area was overwhelming. Pioneering surgeons such as Keen, Krause, Foerster, Frazier, and Cushing demonstrated the motor and sensory areas in human subjects during the course of surgery., Conclusion: The interpretation of central area function has evolved from the 19th century view that diffuse areas of the cortex and the limbic system serve motor and sensory functions to the theories of Grünbaum, Sherrington, Campbell, and others at the beginning of the 20th century, who suggested segregated functional regions defined by sulcal and architectonic anatomic features. Subsequently, Penfield and Rasmussen supported the idea of a sensorimotor area in which central area function is not strictly separated by the central sulcus. Modern research using microelectrode recordings and functional imaging indicates localized primary sensory and motor functions defined by architectonic anatomic features.

This paper begins with consideration of a qualitative model of excitation-contraction coupling in cardiac muscle which is based to a large extent on experimental work carried out on isolated preparations of cardiac muscle by Earl Wood during sabbatical years in Europe in 1966-67 and 1972-73. It goes on to consider newer evidence about excitation-contraction coupling that has been obtained from studies of "skinned" fiber preparations (that is, muscles in which the cell membranes have been disrupted or are absent) and from studied of isolated preparations in which the photoprotein aequorin was used to monitor changes in sarcoplasmic Ca2+ concentration. The results obtained from these two kinds of study are then combined in a qualitative way to illustrate current ideas about the mode of action of inotropic interventions and to provide possible explanations of the Frank-Starling effect as it appears in isolated preparations of cardiac muscle.
