Data from 89 forested catchments and plots across Europe were used to define empirical relationships between aluminum leaching and input fluxes of major ions, output fluxes of major ions, ecosystem parameters such as soil pH, and combinations of these. Forests that release dissolved Al to seepage or surface waters are located primarily in areas receiving the highest loading of acid rain, and the output flux of Al shows the highest correlations to the throughfall flux of inorganic nitrogen, the output fluxes of NO−3, H+, and SO2−4, and the mineral soil pH. If the speciation of Al is taken to be Al3+ (an overestimate), Al is released in a nearly 1:1 molar charge ratio with the sum of NO−3 and SO2−4 in runoff or seepage water over a wide range of base‐poor bedrock types and acid deposition across Europe. The empirical data point to a threshold range of N deposition of 80 to 150 mmolc N m−2 yr−1 and a (less clearly defined) range of S deposition of 100 to 200 mmolc SO2−4 m−2 yr−1 above which Al released from forests exceeds 100 mmolc Al m−2 yr−1 Within this threshold range, the sites that release little or no dissolved Al are those that continue to assimilate input N and/or have high soil pH (>4.5). We evaluate the relationship between the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C:N) of the soil organic horizon and nitrate leaching in runoff or seepage water from33 conifer forests across Europe. The sitesspan a geographical range covering 11 countries from Ireland to western Russia and Finland to the southern Alps, and encompass a wide range in throughfall nitrogen deposition. The aim of the study is to evaluate the hypothesis that the C:N ratio of the organic (OH) horizon can be used to estimate the level of leaching of nitrate from a forestecosystem. The analysis suggests that C:N ratio can be an indicator of nitrate leaching for conifer forests across Europe if these ecosystems are grouped into broad categories of throughfall nitrogen deposition. At low levels of N deposition (<10 kg N ha-1 year-1), nitrate leaching is low regardless of the OH C:N ratio. At intermediate (10-20 kg N ha-1 year-1) and high (>20 kg N ha-1 year-1) N deposition, nitrateleaching increases with decreasing C:N ratio. In addition, for any given value of C:N, the level of nitrate leaching is higher at high N-deposition sites than at intermediate N-deposition sites. From the current data, OH horizon C:N ratio can give a reasonable estimate of the annual export flux of nitrate (95% confidence interval ca 15 kg N ha-1 year-1) for sites receiving throughfall-N up to about 30 kg N ha-1 year-1. To investigate which ecosystem parameters determine the risk and magnitude of nitrate leaching we compiled data from published and unpublished sources on dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN: NO2- +NH4+) in throughfall, DIN leaching loss in runoff or seepage water, and other ecosystem characteristics from 139 European forests. Not all data were available for all sites: 126 sites had at least one year's data on DIN inputs and DIN leaching loss; 40-50 sites had some dataon soil chemistry and/or vegetation pools of N. DIN inputs in throughfall range between <1 and about 70 kg N ha-1 yr-1 and the losses with seepage or runoff range between <1 and 50 kg N ha-1 yr-1. Retention of N within the ecosystem increases with increasing DIN deposition and increasing proportion of NH4+ in deposition. The amount of N in needles and litterfall shows a significant linear relationship with throughfall deposition of DIN, whereas the C:N ratio of the organic (OH) horizon is uncorrelated to the level of throughfall-DIN flux. About 50 % of the variability in DIN leaching loss can be explained by the flux of DIN in throughfall. Alternatively, about 60 % of the variability in DIN leaching loss can be explained in a two-variable multiple regression combining the C:N ratio of the organic soil and the pH of the mineral soil. The survey data suggest that leaching of DIN from forest ecosystems in Europe is related in part to current DIN deposition and in part to the longer-term internal ecosystem N status as reflected in the chemistry ofthe humus and acidification status of the soil. There is a growing evidence base demonstrating that atmospheric nitrogen deposition presents a threat to biodiversity and ecosystem function in acid grasslands in Western Europe. Here, we report the findings of a workshop held for European policy makers to assess the perceived importance of reactive nitrogen deposition for grassland conservation, identify areas for policy development in Europe and assess the potential for managing and mitigating the impacts of nitrogen deposition. The importance of nitrogen as a pollutant is already recognized in European legislation, but there is little emphasis in policy on the evaluation of changes in biodiversity due to nitrogen. We assess the potential value of using typical species, as defined in the European Union Habitats Directive, for determining the impact of nitrogen deposition on acid grasslands. Although some species could potentially be used as indicators of nitrogen deposition, many of the typical species do not respond strongly to nitrogen deposition and are unlikely to be useful for identifying impact on an individual site. We also discuss potential mitigation measures and novel ways in which emissions from agriculture could be reduced.

Regional-scale databases can be particularly useful for identifying relationships between dissolved inorganic nitrogen (N) leaching in forests and environmental drivers, which in turn allow an assessment of the risk of ecosystem damage, such as forest acidification and eutrophication of downstream water bodies. However, detecting the 'signal' of a significant correlate to N leaching against a background of wide variability in other factors requires a large number of sites, and the validation of models developed requires a similarly large number of independent sites. Here we use two large and fully independent databases of forest ecosystems across Europe to develop and validate indicators of N saturation and leaching. One database was used for model development and the other for validating these models. Among 35 variables considered, the most significant indicators of N leaching in the model development database were: the flux of dissolved inorganic N in deposition, mean annual temperature, mean altitude, the site drainage (plot vs catchment), needle- and litter-N concentration, organic horizon C:N ratio, and subsoil pH. Altitude was not a consistent predictor (it was significant in the development database but not in the validation database), and needle and litter N concentration, plot vs catchment, and subsoil pH all showed high intercorrelation with N deposition and so were not significant in models already including N deposition. The most consistent and useful indicators of N leaching were throughfall N deposition, organic horizon C:N ratio and mean annual temperature. Sites receiving low levels of N deposition (<8 kg N ha(-1) y(-1)) showed very low output fluxes of N and were simulated separately from more polluted forests. In general, the models successfully predicted N leaching (mean of +/-5 kg N ha(-1) y(-1) between observed and predicted) from forests at early to intermediate stages of nitrogen saturation but not from nitrogen-saturated sites. Thus, simple relationships developed from combining (1) external drivers (deposition, temperature) and (2) site conditions (nitrogen status of soils) can successfully estimate nitrogen leaching from forests that have not yet been highly damaged by N deposition.

Natural wetlands form the largest source of methane (CH(4)) to the atmosphere. Emission of this powerful greenhouse gas from wetlands is known to depend on climate, with increasing temperature and rainfall both expected to increase methane emissions. This study, combining our field and controlled environment manipulation studies in Europe and North America, reveals an additional control: an emergent pattern of increasing suppression of methane (CH(4)) emission from peatlands with increasing sulfate (SO(4)(2-)-S) deposition, within the range of global acid deposition. We apply a model of this relationship to demonstrate the potential effect of changes in global sulfate deposition from 1960 to 2080 on both northern peatland and global wetland CH(4) emissions. We estimate that sulfur pollution may currently counteract climate-induced growth in the wetland source, reducing CH(4) emissions by approximately 15 Tg or 8% smaller than it would be in the absence of global acid deposition. Our findings suggest that by 2030 sulfur pollution may be sufficient to reduce CH(4) emissions by 26 Tg or 15% of the total wetland source, a proportion as large as other components of the CH(4) budget that have until now received far greater attention. We conclude that documented increases in atmospheric CH(4) concentration since the late 19th century are likely due to factors other than the global warming of wetlands.
