Until recently there was only one set of sample/standard pairs of known XYZ values which had been visually assessed on a pass-fail basis; i.e., that of Davidson and Friede. When these data were used to evaluate seven color difference formulas, the results were inconclusive; no formula was better than any other to a degree which was statistically significant. Now other data obtained in Europe are available, and analysis has yielded statistically significant results. With the use of the most reliable formula, instrumental shade passing becomes a viable alternative to the traditional method of relying on one observer's judgment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
