The article offers information on the history of candles and candlemaking which originated in the northern and central Europe. The use of candle had been the main source of artificial light other than the use of oil lamps. It was in the nineteenth century when tallow, an animal fat derived from sheep, pig, and cow, was used as the main material for making candles. Moreover, other animal products had also been used in creating candles such as beeswax, spermaceti, and vegetable waxes.
