Background and Purpose: Neurology is rapidly evolving as a result of continuous diagnostic and therapeutic progress, which influences the daily work of neurologists. Therefore, updating residency training programmes is crucial for the future of neurology. Several countries are currently discussing and/or modifying the structure of their neurology residency training programme. A detailed and up-to-date overview of the available European residency training programmes will aid this process., Methods: A questionnaire addressing numerous aspects of residency training programmes in neurology was distributed among 38 national representatives of the Resident and Research Fellow Section of the European Academy of Neurology., Results: We obtained data from 32 European countries (response rate 84%). The median (range) duration of the residency training programmes was 60 (12-72) months. In the majority of countries, rotations to other medical disciplines were mandatory, mostly psychiatry (69%), internal medicine (66%) and neurosurgery (59%). However, the choice of medical fields and the duration of rotations varied substantially between countries. In 50% of countries, there were formal regulations regarding training in evidence-based medicine, teaching skills and/or leadership qualities. In many countries (75%), residents had to take an examination., Conclusions: We found substantial variation among European countries in the duration of residency training programmes, and especially in the choice of obligatory rotations to external medical disciplines. Despite a presumably similar spectrum of patients, neurology residency training programmes across Europe are not harmonized. The structure of the programme should be determined by its relevance for neurologists today and in the future., (© 2020 The Authors. Urban areas in Europe are facing a range of environmental public health challenges, such as air pollution, traffic noise and road injuries. The identification and quantification of the public health risks associated with exposure to environmental conditions is important for prioritising policies and interventions that aim to diminish the risks and improve the health of the population. With this purpose in mind, the EURO-HEALTHY project used a consistent approach to assess the impact of key environmental risk factors and urban environmental determinants on public health in European metropolitan areas. A number of environmental public health indicators, which are closely tied to the physical and built environment, were identified through stakeholder consultation; data were collected from six European metropolitan areas (Athens, Barcelona, Lisbon, London, Stockholm and Turin) covering the period 2000-2014, and a health impact assessment framework enabled the quantification of health effects (attributable deaths) associated with these indicators. The key environmental public health indicators were related to air pollution and certain urban environmental conditions (urban green spaces, road safety). The air pollution was generally the highest environmental public health risk; the associated number of deaths in Athens, Barcelona and London ranged between 800 and 2300 attributable deaths per year. The number of victims of road traffic accidents and the associated deaths were lowest in the most recent year compared with previous years. We also examined the positive impacts on health associated with urban green spaces by calculating reduced mortality impacts for populations residing in areas with greater green space coverage; results in Athens showed reductions of all-cause mortality of 26 per 100,000 inhabitants for populations with benefits of local greenspace. Based on our analysis, we discuss recommendations of potential interventions that could be implemented to reduce the environmental public health risks in the European metropolitan areas covered by this study., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Background: Folic acid plays a fundamental role in cell division and differentiation. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) has been associated with infantile neurological and cognitive development. Thus, optimal intrauterine development and growth requires adequate supply of these nutrients during pregnancy., Methods: Healthy pregnant women, aged 18-41 years, were recruited in Granada (Spain; n = 62), Munich (Germany; n=97) and Pécs (Hungary; n=152). We estimated dietary DHA and folate intake in weeks 20 (w20) and 30 of gestation (w30) using a food frequency questionnaire with specific focus on the dietary sources of folate and DHA., Results: Both w20 and w30 Spanish participants had significantly higher daily DHA intakes (155+/-13 and 161+/-9 mg/1,000 kcal) than the German (119+/-9 and 124 +/- 12 mg/1,000 kcal; p=0.002) and Hungarian participants (122+/-8 and 125 +/- 10 mg/1,000 kcal; p=0.005). Hungarian women had higher folate intakes in w20 and w30 (149+/-5 and 147+/-6 microg/1,000 kcal) than Spanish (112+/-2 and 110+/-2 microg/1,000 kcal; p<0.001) and German participants (126+/-4 and 120+/-6 microg/1,000 kcal; p<0.001), respectively., Conclusion: Dietary DHA and folate intake of pregnant women differs significantly across the three European cohorts. Only 7% of the participants reached the recommended folate intake during pregnancy, whereas nearly 90% reached the DHA recommended intake of 200 mg per day., (Copyright 2008 S. Karger AG, Basel.)

Background and Purpose: For detecting therapeutic effect and matching of treatment groups in stroke trials, a scale that meets the clinimetric criteria is of the utmost importance., Methods: The European Stroke Scale consists of 14 items selected for their specificity and their prognostic value. It is designed for patients with middle cerebral artery stroke. Interrater reliability, internal consistency, and time for completion were investigated in 74 patients. Intrarater reliability was studied in 38 patients. To establish concurrent validity, two trials were performed in 20 and 44 patients. The scale was correlated with the MCA Neurological Scale, the Canadian Stroke Scale, the Scandinavian Stroke Scale, the Barthel Index, and the Rankin Scale. Correlations were calculated by means of Spearman's correlation coefficient. The trial in 44 patients also investigated the prognostic validity of the scale for 1-month and 8-month neurological, functional, and handicap status. These data were analyzed by linear regression., Results: Interrater (kappa value range, 0.62 to 0.85) and intrarater (kappa value range, 0.65 to 1.00) reliability for each item was good, and internal consistency was excellent (Cronbach's alpha coefficient, 0.92). Mean time for completion was 8.2 minutes (range, 4 to 14 minutes). Correlations of the European Stroke Scale with other neurological scales ranged from 0.93 to 0.95. The correlation with the Barthel Index and the Rankin Scale was 0.84 and -0.86. The R2 values for prognostic validity ranged from 0.45 to 0.81 (P < or = .0001)., Conclusions: The European Stroke Scale has been developed according to the clinimetric criteria.
