Background: Worldwide, 10% of postpartum women experience postpartum depression, which can lead to diverse sequalae at individual, family, and societal levels. In sub-Saharan Africa, it is estimated that 17% of women experience depression in the postpartum period, which could be an underestimate as 48% of women in the region do not receive postnatal care (81% in Ethiopia and 51% in Guinea) and a large share of postpartum depression remains undiagnosed and untreated as a result. Globally, despite a critical evidence gap, there are growing reports of postpartum depression among women mistreated (disrespected and abused) during childbirth in health facilities, making a strong case to examine the association between mistreatment and postpartum depression. This study in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and Conakry (Guinea) uses a mixed methods design to 1) examine the link between mistreatment and postpartum depression, 2) explore the health system capacity to provide respectful maternity care and maternal mental health services, and 3) explore the experiences of women in accessing care and support for postpartum depression. Methods: We will conduct a prospective longitudinal survey of women (434 in Addis Ababa and 408 in Conakry) from the third trimester of pregnancy to eight weeks postpartum and carry out in-depth interviews with key health system informants (20–25 in each city) and women who recovered from a clinically confirmed episode of postpartum depression (15–25 in each city). Quantitative data from the women's survey will be analysed using a multilevel mixed-effects model; qualitative data from key-informants will be analysed by using a hybrid thematic analysis approach, whereas data from women's in-depth interviews will be analysed using the phenomenological approach. The inclusion of two different settings in our study (Addis Ababa and Conakry) will enable us to apply a comparative health systems lens to explore the dynamics of respectful maternity care and maternal mental health services within the broader health systems of the two countries (Ethiopia and Guinea). Discussion: The findings from this study will inform actions aimed at mitigating the mistreatment of women in maternity settings and improving promotive, preventive, and treatment interventions for postpartum depression in Ethiopia and Guinea. Background: The injectable shorter multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) regimen, has been reported to be less costly and more effective in the treatment of MDR-TB compared to the longer regimen. Ethiopia introduced the injectable shorter regimen (SR) in April 2018 following official recommendation by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2016. While the WHO recommendation was based on evidence coming from extensive programmatic studies in some Asian and African countries, there is paucity of information on patient outcomes in the Ethiopian context. Thus, we aimed to assess the treatment outcomes and identify factors associated with the outcomes of MDR-TB patients on injectable SR. Methods: A multi-center facility-based retrospective cohort study was conducted in Ethiopia on 245 MDR-TB patients who were treated between April 2018 and March 2020. Data were collected from patients' medical records and analyzed using SPSS version 25. Descriptive statistics was used to summarize the results while inferential analysis was employed to investigate predictors of treatment outcomes and survival status. Results: A total of 245 patients were included in the study, with 129 (52.7%) of them being female. Median age of the patients was 27 (IQR: 21–33). The overall treatment success rate was 87.8%, with 156 (63.7%) cured and 59 (24.1%) patients who completed treatment. The unfavorable outcomes accounted for 12.2%, with 16 (6.5%) treatment failure, 8 (3.3%) death and 6 (2.4%) lost to follow up. Majority of the unfavorable outcomes occurred during the early phase of therapy, with median time to event of 1.8 months (95% CI: 0.99—2.69). The use of khat (a green leafy shrub abused for its stimulant like effect) and being diagnosed with MDR-TB than rifampicin resistant only, were identified as independent factors associated with unfavorable outcomes. Rapid growth and improvement in ICT have led to the diffusion of technology in education. The purpose of this study is to investigate teachers' perception on integrating ICT in teaching-learning process. The research questions sought to measure teachers' software usage as well as other instructional tools and materials, preferences for professional development on information gathering and support, factors that encourage teachers' usage of technology, teachers' perceptions of self-efficacy and barriers that teachers faced during technology utilization in teaching-learning process. A population of 72 teachers at Adwa College participated in this survey. The result on hardware and software usage shows that majority of teachers in the college are unable to use hardware in teaching learning process due to mainly shortage of resources. Teachers who cannot use ICT as instructional tool are 55.6 percent higher than those who can use it. This indicates that most teachers in the college are not integrating ICT in the course they teach. In regard the information and support services, there is no equal support service by the technical support units. Adwa College is found as poor by most of the teachers in preparing ICT trainings. The mean of the factors that encourage technology ranged from 2.72 to 2.99 which indicate that encouraging technology is important to apply ICT in teaching-learning process. Moreover, the mean for the perception of teachers about ICT usage ranged from 4.28 to 4.79 shows that Adwa College teachers have strong positive perception to use ICT in teaching-learning process. Pearson correlation (r = 0.412) shows that there is significant relationship between teachers' perception towards ICT integration into Teaching-learning process and the factors that encourage ICT usage. This indicates that the teachers' perception towards ICT integration into teaching-learning process increases if ICT usage is encouraged and vice versa. The results of the correlation for the relationship between teachers' perception toward ICT usage to increase quality of courses they teach and their productiveness due to ICT usage is also found as significant (r = 0.615). This indicates that the teachers' productiveness is realized if ICT is integrated to the course they teach. However, majority of the teachers pointed out that one of the barriers to technology implementation is lack of teachers' technical knowledge and shortage of resources. This shows that equipping the college with ICT is not enough for attaining educational change. Therefore, the college should critically focus to integrate ICT in each course to make courses interactive and easily understandable by their students.

This study attempted to explore the main influences of politics on teacher's academic freedom and on the independence of academic institutions. The general objective of this study was assessing the impact of political party membership among teachers on their freedom in the study area. Nigste Saba is a model high school which is selected purposefully from the total three high schools in Adwa town. The study explored the influence difference made on the teachers who are members of the ruling political party and non-members. Moreover, it explored the influence of the woreda on the school and teachers' academic freedom by using census method (86 teacher respondents). The study finds that majority (62.2 percent) of teachers in the school are not members to any political party since they hate politics. But they are obliged to join the ruling party directly or indirectly. The majority of the teachers (68.9 percent) agreed that members of the ruling party get priority in getting benefits from the school. The school is turned into a center of politics instead of academics. Moreover, the main influences made on teachers who are not members of the ruling party are: intimidated by the school director, intimidated by the woreda educational office, neglected from training, victimized during promotion, transferred and other service related issues, delayed documents in transferring from one to another work place and exposed to lack of transparency. Furthermore, the members of the ruling party also have influences such as expending more time to political issues, de-motivated to teach accurately and loose freedom. All these cause teachers to hate their profession in the school. In addition, the study finds that on average one teacher who is member of the ruling party is paid up to 3 percent of their monthly salary to the party. In general, there is treatment difference between teachers who are members to the ruling party and those who are not. Moreover, political interference in the affairs of an educational institution destroys teachers' freedom and education quality. Freeing schools from political intervention to do their academic issues independently can sustain academic freedom and quality of education. Furthermore, the discrimination between members of the ruling party and nonmembers should be avoided.

Background: More than 70% of the health facilities in Tigray, northern Ethiopia, have been totally or partially destroyed by the recent war in the region. Diagnosis and management of tuberculosis were among many health services that suffered. In this study we assess the status of tuberculosis care in health facilities of Tigray during the recent war and compare it with the immediate pre-war state. Methods: Using sequential mixed method, we analyzed and compared the availability of diagnostic services in 69 health facilities and the utilization of tuberculosis care in 50 of them immediately before the war (September-October 2020) and during the war (November-July 2021). TB focal persons in each selected health facility were interviewed to evaluate the status of diagnostic services. Patient service utilization was assessed using health facility registrations. We also compared the average monthly case detection rate of multidrug resistant tuberculosis in the region before and during the war. We computed summary statistics and performed comparisons using t-tests. Finally, existing challenges related to tuberculosis care in the region were explored via in-depth interviews. Two investigators openly coded and analyzed the qualitative data independently via thematic analysis. Results: Among the 69 health facilities randomly selected, the registers of 19 facilities were destroyed by the war; data from the remaining 50 facilities were included in the TB service utilization analysis. In the first month of the war (November 2021) the number of tuberculosis patients visiting health facilities fell 34%. Subsequently the visitation rate improved steadily, but not to pre-war rates. This reduction was significant in northwest, central and eastern zones. Tuberculosis care in rural areas was hit hardest. Prior to the war 60% of tuberculosis patients were served in rural clinics; this number dropped to an average of 17% during the war. Health facilities were systematically looted. Of the 69 institutions assessed, over 69% of the microscopes in health centers, 87.5% of the microscopes in primary hospitals, and 68% of the microscopes in general hospitals were stolen or damaged. Two GeneXpert nucleic acid amplification machines were also taken from general hospitals. Regarding drug resistant TB, the average number of multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) cases detected per month was reduced by 41% during the war with p-value < 0.001. In-depth interviews with eight health care workers indicated that the main factors affecting tuberculosis care in the area were lack of security, health facility destruction, theft of essential equipment, and drug supply disruption. Conclusion and recommendation: Many tuberculosis patients failed to visit health facilities during the war. There was substantial physical damage to health care facilities and systematic looting of diagnostic equipment. Background: Foot and mouth disease is a contagious, transboundary, and economically devastating viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals. The disease can cause many consequences, including decreased productivity, limited market access, and elimination of flocks or herds. This study aimed to assess farmers' willingness to pay (WTP) for foot and mouth disease (FMD) vaccines and identify factors influencing their WTP. A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted on 396 randomly selected livestock-owning farmers from three districts in the central Oromia region (Ambo, Dendi, and Holeta districts. The study utilized the contingent valuation method, specifically employing dichotomous choice bids with double bounds, to evaluate the willingness to pay (WTP) for the FMD vaccine. Mean WTP was assessed using interval regression, and influential factors were identified. Results: The study revealed that the farmer's mean willingness to pay for a hypothetical foot and mouth disease vaccine was 37.5 Ethiopian Birr (ETB) [95% confidence interval [CI]: 34.5 40.58] in all data, while it was 23.84 (95% CI: 21.47–26.28) in the mixed farming system and 64.87 Ethiopian Birr (95% CI: 58.68 71.15) in the market-oriented farming system. We identified main livelihood, management system, sales income, breed, keeping animals for profit, and foot and mouth disease impact perception score as significant variables (p ≤ 0.05) determining the farmers' WTP for the FMD vaccine. Conclusion: Farmers demonstrated a high computed willingness to pay, which can be considered an advantage in the foot and mouth disease vaccination program in central Oromia. The productivity of rice (Oryza sativa L.) in Ethiopia is below the potential due to spatial and temporal soil fertility variability and sub-optimal fertilization. This on-farm study was conducted in 2019 and 2020 to determine yield-limiting nutrients, quantify yield gaps, and determine indigenous soil nutrient supply (ISNS) for lowland rice in Fogera floodplain of Northwest Ethiopia. The study comprised the following treatments; NPKSZnB, -N (PKSZnB), -P (NKSZnB), -K (NPSZnB), -S (NPKZnB), -Zn (NPKSB), -B (NPKSZn), and Zero fertilizer (F0). The treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design considering farmers' fields as replications. The results revealed that the growth and yield of rice were significantly affected by the -N and F0 treatments. However, the other nutrient omissions did not significantly influence the mentioned parameters. The highest (2299.5 kg ha−1) yield response was recorded from the -N treatment. However, very low and insignificant yield responses were recorded from the other nutrient omissions. The average agronomic N use efficiency was 16.7 kg kg−1, which indicated a high probability of yield response to the application of N fertilizer. The lowest (42.4%) ISNS was found for N, while the highest ISNS (>90%) were recorded for P, K, S, Zn, and B. The yield gaps due to the omission of N was 57.6%, while the yield gaps due to the omission of P, K, S, Zn, and B were very low. This study presents an engineering geological investigation aimed at assessing the bearing capacity of the proposed site for the Meli gold processing plant (GPP) located in the northwestern region of Tigray, Ethiopia. The geological composition of the site predominantly comprises low-grade metamorphic rocks, with intermediate metavolcanic rocks being the most prevalent. This research utilized an innovative combination of empirical methodologies, including the Hoek–Brown and Mohr–Coulomb criteria, to evaluate the strength and elasticity characteristics of the rock mass. Additionally, the rock mass foundation for the GPP was rigorously classified using renowned systems such as the rock mass rating (RMR), quality index (Q), and geological strength index (GSI). Employing five different empirical equations to estimate bearing capacity, this study significantly advances our understanding by comparing these diverse methodologies, which is a novel approach in this geological context where engineering property data are scarce or non-existent. The bearing capacities determined using the Hoek–Brown and Mohr–Coulomb criteria ranged from 11.6 to 46.2 MPa and 7.9 to 10.5 MPa, respectively. These findings not only offer valuable insights into the assessment of bearing capacity in metamorphic rock formations but also underscore the effectiveness of combining multiple empirical approaches to enhance the reliability of geological assessments. This research contributes to the advancement of construction practices and enhances project planning strategies in comparable geological environments, particularly highlighting the utility of robust empirical data in the absence of extensive drilling data. By integrating comprehensive empirical analyses, the study provides a methodological framework that significantly aids in informed decision-making for future projects located in similar geological settings. Background: We aimed to compare anticoagulation control and outcomes between usual medical care (UMC) and pharmacist-led anticoagulation services (PLAS) in patients receiving warfarin at the Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted, including 350 (66.7%) and 175 (33.3%) patients from the UMC and PLAS groups, respectively, from 525 patients. The time in therapeutic range (TTR) was determined using the Rosendaal method, with a TTR ≥ 65% set as the cut-off for optimal anticoagulation. The two-sample Wilcoxon rank-sum (Mann–Whitney U) test was used to compare continuous variables between groups. Categorical variables were compared between groups using Pearson's chi-square test or Fisher's exact test. Logistic regression and negative binomial regression analyses were conducted to identify the factors associated with suboptimal TTR and secondary outcomes, respectively, at the p values < 0.05, and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: Compared with the UMC group, the patients in the PLAC group showed a significantly higher median (IQR) TTR [60.89% (43.5–74.69%) vs. 53.65% (33.92–69.14%), p < 0.001]. A significantly higher optimal TTR (≥ 65%) was achieved in the PLAC group (41.7% vs. 31.7%) than in the UMC group (p = 0.002). The odds of having a poor TTR were reduced by 43% (AOR = 0.57, 95% CI = 0.36–0.88, p = 0.01) among patients in the PLAC group compared to those in the UMC group. There were no statistically significant differences in the secondary outcomes between the groups, except for all-cause emergency visits (p = 0.003). The incidence of bleeding events decreased by 3% (IRR = 0.97, 95% CI = 0.96–0.99, p < 0.001) for every increase in INR monitoring frequency. The incidence of thromboembolic events increased by a factor of 15.13 (IRR = 15.13, 95% CI = 1.47–155.52, p = 0.02) among patients with a high-risk CHA2DS2-VASc score compared with those with a moderate score. Conclusion: Patients in the PLAC group had a significantly higher median TTR than those in the UMC group did. There were no statistically significant differences in the secondary outcomes between the groups, except for fewer all-cause emergency department visits in the PLAC group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Civilian war and internal conflicts increase the incidences of mental health conditions among war survivors. It is crucial to assess war-related psychological consequences in war-affected areas in Ethiopia to intervene in the future. Thus, this study aimed to determine the magnitude of psychological distress and associated factors of psychological distress among war survivor women in Northern, Ethiopia. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted, and 1596 war survivor women were recruited to participate using a face-to-face interviews with a census sampling technique from May 1–30, 2022. The psychological distress was assessed using a Kessler psychological distress scale (K10). Bi-variable and multi-variable logistic regression analyses were used, and variables with a p-value less than 0.05 in the multivariable analyses were considered statistically significant. Result: In this study, the response rate was 100% and the prevalence of psychological distress was 44.90% at a 95% CI: (42.40, 47.40). Psychological distress was significantly associated with the education of ability to read and write (AOR = 2.92; 95% CI: 2.12, 4.01), primary education and above (AOR = 3.08; 95% CI: 2.09, 4.54), housewife (AOR = 5.07; 95%CI: 2.64, 9.74), farmer (AOR = 8.92; 95%CI: 4.03, 19.70), emotional violence (AOR = 1.52; 95%CI: 1.05, 2.18), physical violence (AOR = 3.85; 95%CI: 2.37, 6.26) and sexual violence (AOR = 3.25; 95%CI: 1.98, 5.33) whereas being separate was protective for psychological distress (AOR = 0.38; 95%CI: 0.16, 0.92). Conclusion: The prevalence of psychological distress was found to be high. Therefore, women who are housewives, married, farmers, educated, and who have experienced violence must be the focus of governmental and private collaborative interventions to prevent war-related psychological morbidity and mortality. Nutrition-sensitive agriculture is an approach that aims to ensure the production of affordable, safe, culturally appropriate, and nutritious foods in sufficient quantity and quality to meet dietary needs. This study aims to examine the production pathway by which smallholder farmers adopt nutrition-sensitive agriculture in northwest Ethiopia. Data were collected from 478 randomly sampled households through a structured questionnaire-based survey, observations, and group discussions. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed for analysis. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the influences of demographic, socioeconomic, and institutional explanatory variables on the production of various food groups in households. Arable land owned by households, the use of irrigation, access to the nearest markets, contacts with agricultural extension workers, and management practices affect plant-sourced food production. On the other hand, the number of livestock owned, the total crop produced, and contacts with extension workers affected animal-sourced food production. However, different factors, such as technological, institutional, and managerial challenges, that include dependency on rain-fed and free-grazing-based traditional herding systems adversely affect the production pathway to nutrition-sensitive agriculture. The study concludes that improving agricultural extension services, promoting small-scale irrigation schemes, and introducing improved animal feeding with improved crop and livestock management techniques could significantly contribute to increased household availability of diversified foods. Land degradation is one of the major challenges causing food insecurity and instability in Ethiopia. A comprehensive study on trends and drivers of land degradation and, socioeconomic and ecological impact of land degradation is necessary for an effective and sustainable mitigation measures. This study reviewed the drivers, trends and impacts of land degradation, existing sustainable land management (SLM) practices, and policies for land use and resources management. We employed the keyword research acquisition approach to review 122 scientific papers, reports, and other documents. The scientific literatures in the study were accessed through as the Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar search engines, while reports and other additional materials were sourced from a variety of repositories and governmental offices. There has been a substantial increase in soil erosion since the 1980s in the highlands of Ethiopia. Illegal logging, poor land management system, overgrazing of pasturelands, population growth, insecure land tenure, war and conflict, poverty, ineffective government policies and programs, institutional issues, poor rural markets, and low agricultural inputs remained the major drivers for land degradation in Ethiopia causing huge loss of agricultural production and environmental unsustainability. Biological and physical soil and water conservation measures, exclosure establishment, afforestation, and reforestation programs are the most common intervention measures of preventing and restoring degraded lands. SLM practices such as intercropping systems, composting, crop rotation, zero grazing, minimum tillage, agroforestry and rotational grazing has been implemented across the country. However, land security and the absence of clearly defined property rights are the major factors that influence farmers' decisions for a long-term investment on land resources. Background: This study examines medication adherence among kidney transplant patients at St. Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, focusing on the level of adherence and associated factors to immunosuppressant medicines. Methods and materials: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 270 patients from October 2021 to January 2022 using a structured questionnaire analyzed with SPSS version 26. The prevalence of medication adherence was computed, and a binary logistic regression was fitted to estimate the association. Medication adherence level measurement in post-kidney transplant patients was assessed using the Simplified Medication Adherence Questionnaire (SMAQ) and Basel Adherence Assessment Scale in Immunosuppressants (BAASIS). A 95% confidence interval and p-value < 0.05 were used for statistical significance. Results: The study found that 71.5% of kidney transplant patients were male, with a median age of 37 and a mean duration of 3.55 years. Medication adherence in post-kidney transplant patients was 81.9%. Post-transplant duration above 5 years and missing follow-up visits more than two times was associated with a 92.6% and 91.2% in medication non-adherence rate respectively. Additionally, forgetfulness was associated with a 90.6%, non-adherence level compared to drug unavailability and financial reasons. Conclusion and recommendation: The study indicates that our patients exhibit higher medication adherence than WHO-measured levels, suggesting the need for healthcare providers to strengthen their intervention, especially for those above 5 years post-kidney transplant. The reason for increased adherence could be explained by the health education program about the medication name, dosing, frequency of ingestion and adverse effects of the drug, and effects of non-adherence. Background: Food insecurity is a state or condition in which people have limited or uncertain physical, social, and economic access to safe, sufficient, and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs. Since no thorough evaluation was carried out to determine the degree of household food insecurity in Tigrayan communities in the aftermath of the conflict. This study aims to describe household-level food insecurity status among pregnant and lactating women during the post-armed conflict in Tigray, Ethiopia. Method: Descriptive research was designed to assess household food insecurity. A multi-stage sampling technique was used for this study. One thousand two hundred forty-nine households were selected systematically following a list of food insecure households. Descriptive statistical values, including frequency counts, percentages, minimum values, maximum values, and averages, were calculated to quantify the indicators under study. Household food insecurity and hunger Scale measurement using the standardized Food and Agriculture Organization standard. Results: The mean age (± SD) of the mothers was 28.35 ± 5.91 years. More than three fourth of the participants 1010(80.93%) were rural residents. The survey result showed that 88.8% of the pregnant and lactating were food insecure. Half (50.1%) of the households were hungry,one month before the study, 78.5% of the families expressed concern about running out of food and 6.4% had severe hunger. Conclusions: The food insecurity levels and hunger prestige of the study communities were excessively high. This is in the context of a region affected by intense armed conflict. It is commended that the study communities need to be safeguarded from the direct and long-term consequences of armed conflict-caused household food insecurity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Low birth weight (LBW) is a major public health problem in Ethiopia. Dietary diversity is a key indicator of maternal dietary adequacy that may affect birth weight but little is known about their relationship. Hence, this study aimed to assess the association of suboptimal maternal dietary diversity during pregnancy and low birth weight in Gurage Zone, Ethiopia. Methods: The prospective study was conducted among 1062 pregnant women enrolled consecutively in between 16 to 20 gestational weeks and followed until delivery. The baseline data were collected at recruitment and dietary diversity was assessed using the minimum dietary diversity score for women (MDD-W) tool in three different rounds. The average of three scores was considered to categorize women into optimal (consumed ≥ 5 food groups) and suboptimal (consumed < 5 food groups) dietary diversity groups. The risk of low birth weight among suboptimal dietary diversity was assessed using modified Poisson regression with robust standard error. Results: Of the 1062 pregnant women recruited, 959 (90.4%) women completed follow-up. Among them, 302 (31.5%) women are having optimal and the rest, 657 (68.5%) women are having suboptimal dietary diversity. The risk of low birth weight was significantly higher among women with sub-optimal dietary diversity than among those with optimal diversity (ARR = 1.89, 95% CI: 1.25, 2.84). Other factors such as rural residence (ARR = 1.61, 95% CI: 1.43, 1.87), age > = 35 years (AAR = 3.94, 95% CI: 2.41, 6.46), being underweight (ARR = 1.81, 95% CI: 1.14, 2.86), height < 150cm (ARR = 4.65, 95% CI: 2.52, 8.59), unwanted pregnancy (ARR = 3.35, 95% CI: 2.23, 5.02), preterm delivery (3.65, 95% CI: 2.27, 5.84) and lack of nutritional counseling (ARR = 1.69, 95% CI: 1.08, 2.67) significantly increased the risk of low birth weight. Conclusion: Suboptimal dietary diversity associated low birth weight. Promoting dietary diversity by strengthening nutritional education and avoiding unwanted pregnancy particularly among rural residents may help to reduce the incidence of low birth weight. Simple Summary: Immunocompromised individuals, including hematological cancer cases, are prone to a high risk of infections such as SARS-CoV-2. Adverse outcomes, including high mortality, were reported in cases infected with SARS-CoV-2 compared with the general population as well as with non-infected malignancy cases. Liver impairment was reported in individuals co-infected with SARS-CoV-2 and other blood borne viruses including HBV. The aim of this study was to assess the SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence and occurrence of associated infection with HBV among acute leukemia cases in Ethiopia. The findings of this study could potentially increase the clinician awareness of ongoing infections, improve patient care, and support public health strategies. SARS-CoV-2 and blood-borne viral coinfections are well reported. Nevertheless, little is known regarding the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 and coinfection with blood-borne viruses in hematologic malignancy patients in Ethiopia. We aimed to assess the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 and associated infections with hepatitis B and other viruses among adolescent and adult acute leukemia patients at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2020 to June 2021. Blood samples were tested for the presence of anti-SARS-CoV-2, HBV, HCV, and HIV with ELISA kits and occult hepatitis B infection with a real-time polymerase chain reaction assay. Out of a total 110 cases, the SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence was 35.5%. The prevalence showed a significant increment from July 2020 to the end of June 2021 (p = 0.015). In 22.7% and 2.7% of leukemia cases, HBV and HIV, respectively, were detected. No HCV was identified. The rate of SARS-CoV-2 coinfection with HBV and HIV was 28% (11/39) and 2.6% (1/39), respectively; however, there was no statistically significant association between SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity with HBV and HIV (p > 0.05). Background: Higher rate of acute malnutrition is observed in emergencies compared to non-emergency settings and severe acute malnutrition upsurges alarmingly and become deadly in humanitarian crises due to lack of food, lack of quality water supply and insufficient healthcare. Research is one learning tool by identifying strength and areas of improvement. However, little is known about outcomes of therapeutic feeding programmes in comparison with the standard indicators set in humanitarian setting. Methods: Health facility based prospective cohort study was conducted using routinely collected programme data of children hospitalized to the inpatient therapeutic feeding center in suhul general hospital from January 1st, 2023 to June 30, 2023. Data was collected using a form developed relating to the federal ministry of health standard management protocols for severe acute malnutrition then it was cleaned, coded and entered to EpiData version 4.2.0 and then exported to SPSS version 25 for analysis. Results: From 184 children, 96.2% were stabilized while the remaining 3.8% were censored with overall median stabilizing time of 8 days. Weight gain was used as one of the discharging criteria for infants less than six months and their mean weight gain found to be 12.89 g per kilogram daily. Appetite test (AHR = 0.338; 95% CI: 0.221–0.518), blood transfusion (AHR = 5.825; 95% CI: 2.568–13.211), IV fluid resuscitation (AHR = 2.017; 95% CI: 1.094–3.717), IV antibiotics (AHR = 2.288; 95% CI: 1.164-4.500) and NG tube feeding (AHR = 1.485; 95% CI: 1.065–2.071) were identified as significant predictors of stabilizing time. Conclusion: All the outcome indicators for stabilization center are consistent with the SPHERE association set of standards during humanitarian intervention. The hospital and other concerned humanitarian organizations should focus on sustaining these achievements as suhul hospital is the main treatment center for children suffering from severe acute malnutrition in the northwest zone of Tigray regional state. Ecosystems provide a wide range of services crucial for human well-being and decision-making processes at various levels. This study analyzed the major land cover types of north-central Ethiopia and their impact on total and per-capita ecosystem service value (ESV). The ESV was estimated using the benefit-transfer method along the established global and local coefficient values for the periods 1973, 1986, 2001, 2016, and 2024. The findings show that agricultural lands continued to expand at a rate of 563.4 ha year−1, at the expense of forests and grasslands. As a result, the total ESV of the study area declined from $101.4 to $61.03 million and $60.08–$43.69 million, respectively. The ESV per capita was also diminished by $152.4 (37.7%) and $257 (40.6%), respectively. However, land-cover improvement during the period 2001–2016 enhanced the total and per capita ESV in the study area. Therefore, potential future research may be required to develop a valid approach for assessing the robustness and sensitivity of value coefficients for the valuation of the ESV at the landscape level. (1) Background: Measles remains a major cause of disease and death worldwide, especially in the World Health Organization African Region. This study aimed to estimate the coverage of measles vaccinations and map the spatial distribution of measles vaccination dropout in Ethiopia; (2) Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Ethiopia's underprivileged areas. The study included 3646 mothers/caregivers of children. ArcGIS for the spatial analysis, Global Moran's I statistic for spatial autocorrelation, and Getis-Ord Gi* statistics for hot spot analysis were applied; (3) Results: Overall, coverages of measles-containing-vaccine first- and second-doses were 67% and 35%, respectively. Developing regions had the lowest coverages of measles-containing-vaccine first- and second-doses, 46.4% and 21.2%, respectively. On average, the measles vaccination dropout estimate was 48.3%. Refugees had the highest measles vaccination dropout estimate (56.4%). The hot spot analysis detected the highest burden of measles vaccination dropout mainly in the northeastern parts of Ethiopia, such as the Afar Region's zones 1 and 5, the Amhara Region's North Gondar Zone, and peripheral areas in the Benishangul Gumuz Region's Assosa Zone; (4) Conclusions: The overall measles vaccination coverages were relatively low, and measles vaccination dropout estimates were high. The purpose of this study was to determine magnitude and associated factors of maternal near miss among women seeking obstetric and gynecologic care. A hospital based cross-sectional study design was implemented in selected public hospitals of Tigrai. Systematic random sampling method was used to select study participants. Data were entered to epi data manager version 4.1 and exported to Statistical Package for social science version 20 for analysis. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with maternal near miss. The magnitude of maternal near miss was found to be 7.3%. Regression analysis showed that, mothers who reside in rural area, had distance of greater than 10 km, referred from low level health institution, and mothers had no antenatal care follow up were significantly associated with maternal near miss. Background: Globally, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) 2023 report, more than 14.3 million children in low- and middle-income countries, primarily in Africa and South-East Asia, are not receiving any vaccinations. Ethiopia is one of the top ten countries contributing to the global number of zero-dose children. Objective: To estimate the prevalence of zero-dose children and associated factors in underserved populations of Ethiopia. Methods: A cross-sectional vaccine coverage survey was conducted in June 2022. The study participants were mothers of children aged 12–35 months. Data were collected using the CommCare application system and later analysed using Stata version 17. Vaccination coverage was estimated using a weighted analysis approach. A generalized estimating equation model was fitted to determine the predictors of zero-dose children. An adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) and a p-value of 0.05 or less was considered statistically significant. Results: The overall prevalence of zero-dose children in the study settings was 33.7% (95% CI: 34.9%, 75.7%). Developing and pastoralist regions, internally displaced peoples, newly formed regions, and conflict-affected areas had the highest prevalence of zero-dose children. Wealth index (poorest [AOR = 2.78; 95% CI: 1.70, 4.53], poorer [AOR = 1.96; 95% CI: 1.02, 3.77]), single marital status [AOR = 2.4; 95% CI: 1.7, 3.3], and maternal age (15–24 years) [AOR = 1.2; 95% CI: 1.1, 1.3] were identified as key determinant factors of zero-dose children in the study settings. Additional factors included fewer than four Antenatal care visits (ANC) [AOR = 1.3; 95% CI: 1.2, 1.4], not receiving Postnatal Care (PNC) services [AOR = 2.1; 95% CI: 1.5, 3.0], unavailability of health facilities within the village [AOR = 3.7; 95% CI: 2.6, 5.4], women-headed household [AOR = 1.3; 95% CI:1.02, 1.7], low gender empowerment [AOR = 1.6; 95% CI: 1.3, 2.1], and medium gender empowerment [AOR = 1.7; 95% CI: 1.2, 2.5]. Conclusion: In the study settings, the prevalence of zero-dose children is very high. Poor economic status, disempowerment of women, being unmarried, young maternal age, and underutilizing antenatal or post-natal services are the important predictors. Therefore, it is recommended to target tailored integrated and context-specific service delivery approach. Background: Campylobacter species are the most predominant bacterial agents to cause diarrhea in under-five children. It poses a serious challenge to public health worldwide with ongoing acquisition of resistance to different antimicrobials with multiple patterns. Thus, this study aimed to determine the prevalence, and antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter species, and associated factors among under-five children with diarrhea in selected public health facilities. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among under-five children with diarrhea using convenient sampling. Health facilities were selected using a simple random sampling method. The stool samples collected from 214 study participants were transported and processed following standard microbiological protocols. Campylobacter isolates were identified using Gram staining, biochemical test, serological test, and aerobic growth at 25°C. Antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of isolates were performed using the Kirby–Bauer method. Data were analyzed using SPSS ver. 25.0. Association between variables was assessed using Chi-square test and Logistic regression, with P ≤ 0.05. Results: The subject's mean age was 31.3 (± 3.9) months. Of the 214 samples cultured, 14 (6.5%) of them were positive for Campylobacter species with 95% CI (3.3– 10.3). Out of the isolated species, 12 (85.7%) were Campylobacter jejuni /Campylobacter coli and 2 (14.3%) were other Campylobacter species. Bottle feeding and history of direct contact to domestic animals were associated with Campylobacter species (AOR=5.13, CI=1.21– 21.6, p=0.026 and AOR=4.93, CI=1.33– 18.17, P=0.016), respectively. Campylobacter isolates were highly resistant to ciprofloxacin 5 (35.7%), and tetracycline 3 (21.4%). Conclusion: A higher incidence of Campylobacter species was obtained in children who were bottle-fed and who had a history of direct contact with domestic animals. The isolates were highly resistant to ciprofloxacin and tetracycline. These findings indicate that special attention is needed for better management of Campylobacter drug resistance in under-five children. To enhance and support our current findings, further research using molecular techniques is needed to identify the resistant and virulent genes of the bacterial isolates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a major public health problem that continues to pose an enormous challenge to mankind's survival worldwide. In urban Ethiopia, the HIV prevalence among adults aged 15–49 years is 2.9%, while in Addis Ababa, it is 3.4%. To take the edge off, the Ethiopian government has been implementing the 90-90-90 strategy also known as the surge project, in urban cities. However, the implementation of the program has not been evaluated. Thus, we evaluated the process of the 90-90-90 targets of the surge project in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods: We conducted a case study with concurrent mixed-methods evaluation. We used indicator-driven evaluation dimensions –availability and accommodation dimensions from the health services access and compliance and fidelity from implementation fidelity frameworks to test the program process theory with a total of 52 indicators. We interviewed a total of 419 clients and 210 healthcare providers and reviewed 417 clients' cards and 17 registries. We also conducted 30 key informant interviews and resource inventory. A binary logistic regression analysis was done to identify factors associated with clients' satisfaction. We transcribed and translated the qualitative data and analysed thematically. Finally, we judged the overall process of the surge project based on the pre-seated judgmental criteria as; needs urgent improvement, needs improvement and well implemented. Results: We found that 90% of the project process was as per the program process theory measured by the availability of resources (95.8%), compliance (88.0%), fidelity (84.7%), and accommodation of services (89.3%). We found a shortage of human power, test kits, and viral load testing machines. The commitment of health care providers, provider-client interaction, and clients' satisfaction with the service at card rooms were found to be poor. Moreover, being aged 15–24, being married and government government-employed were negatively associated with clients' satisfaction with antiretroviral therapy services. Conclusion: The process of the surge project needs improvement. Moreover, the achievements of the first two 90–90 targets were poor. Therefore, implementers need to take intensified action for the availability of resources and to improve the commitment of healthcare providers through refreshment training. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Ensuring regular supervision, capacity building and motivation are crucial for the successful retention of health extension workers (HEWs). Failure in these aspects could increase the attrition rate of HEWs. To date, there has not been a comprehensive nationwide study on HEW attrition that could act as a source of evidence for policy makers. This study explored HEW attrition, including leaving the health sector entirely and its regional variation, trends and predictors of attrition out of the health system. Methods: This study explored the attrition of HEWs from the beginning of the program until the end of 2018. A district-based mixed method study was conducted to review the personnel files of HEWs. A multistage sampling technique was employed to select 3,476 HEWs, and a probability weight was assigned for each observation. Descriptive statistics were calculated for the outcome and predictor variables. A logistic regression model was used to model attrition out of the health system. A qualitative study was conducted to understand the reasons why HEWs leave their jobs. Thematic analysis was performed using Nvivo version 12. Results: The magnitude of attrition of HEWs was found to be 21.1% during the fifteen years of HEP implementation. Of the total 704 who left their job as an HEW, 530 (73%) left the health system altogether. Number of biological children [AOR = 0.61, 95% CI; 0.42–0.89], having an additional education [AOR = 8.34, 95% CI; 3.67–18.98], obtaining official recognition [AOR = 0.29, 95% CI; 0.10–0.83], administrative reprimand [AOR = 1.66, 95% CI; 1.07 -2. 56), distance between district health office and health post [AOR = 1.75, 95%CI; 1.18–2.59) and COC status [AOR = 2.06, 95%CI 1.39–3.06) were independent predictors of leaving the health sector. High regional variation in attrition was observed, ranging from 38.5% in Addis Ababa to just 6.1% in the Harari region. The trend of attrition has steadily increased over time, with a high of 1,999 attritions per 10,000 HEW in 2018. Psychosocial factors, administrative issues, career advancement incentives, and workplace-related problems were the themes that emerged from the qualitative study as reasons for attrition of HEWs. Conclusion: Even though the magnitude of attrition was relatively low, there was high regional variation and incremental trends. Moreover, the out-of-health sector attrition is also high. Critically examining the HEP policy environment to increase the number of HEWs deployed per health post to reduce workload and improving HEW incentives, including career development, may assist in increasing HEW job satisfaction, which in turn could help to reduce attrition, including leaving the health sector. Background: Food and nutrition insecurity continues to be one of the persistent challenges in Ethiopia. The country has been responding to the challenges in various ways to foster sustainable development. Objectives: The objective of the study is to assess national food and nutrition security policy and strategic responses. Method: A qualitative review of policies, strategies, programs, guidelines, and a government commitment, document was conducted. Interviews with experts from food and nutrition-implementing governmental and nongovernmental organizations were also employed. Thematic analysis with description was used. Results: The results of the study revealed that global initiatives stimulated Ethiopia to progressively take various strategic directions to address the ongoing food and nutrition challenges. In addition to various policy directions, the country has been implementing nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive programs under the multisectoral approach. The concepts and practices of food and nutrition security shifted from simply balancing the demand and supply of food to a broader and more inclusive food system approach with the involvement of multiple actors. However, more has been said than done. The policy, strategic objectives, and initiatives have not been adequately translated into practices. Actions toward ensuring food and nutrition security, on the other hand, are constrained by institutional, environmental, technological, and emerging priorities like an outbreak of a pandemic and political instability. Conclusion: The study concluded that available policy and strategic intents have sufficiently addressed food and nutrition challenges in documents and need to be fully translated into practices. Canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) is a significant vector-borne Meta zoonotic disease caused by agents of the L. donovani complex. The disease is transmitted by the bite of phlebotomine female sandflies of the genera Phlebotomus and Lutzomyia in the old and new worlds, respectively. This study was conducted to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practices of the residents about CVL based on the One Health concept in two towns of the Oromia Region, Ethiopia. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted between October 2019 and September 2020, using an interview questionnaire as the study instrument. The study participants were selected through a simple random sampling method. Pearson's Chi-square and logistic regression tests were used to evaluate the association between the study participants' knowledge, attitude, and practices toward CVL and possible risk factors. The study included a total of 400 participants, and the results indicated that 77.25% had good knowledge, 60.5% had a favorable attitude, and 59.25% had good practices toward CVL. The town of Ejaji and dog ownership were significantly associated with good knowledge (p = 0.001), and attitude (p = 0.001) towards CVL, while having a dog (p = 0.001), having a diploma (p = 0.019) or degree and above (0.018), being divorced or widowed (0.012), and being Oromo (p = 0.013) were all significantly associated with good CVL practice. Most participants in both study areas had good knowledge but moderate attitudes and practices toward CVL. Therefore, it is crucial to undertake comprehensive community health education and awareness programs of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis and its vectors based on the One Health concept through various means. Escherichia coli is a major foodborne pathogen worldwide. This study was conducted to assess the prevalence, risk factors, and antimicrobial susceptibility of E. coli and E. coli O157 in milk and milk products and hygienic practices in West Shoa, Oromia, Ethiopia. Five hundred fifty-six milk samples comprising 421 udder milk, 57 bulk tank milk, and 78 milk products were investigated. Moreover, a questionnaire was administered to 145 participants to assess hygienic practices. A standard microbiological procedure was used to detect E. coli and E. coli O157. The Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method was used to test the antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates. Petri film plates were used to enumerate the coliform in raw bulk tank milk. Farm and animal-level E coli prevalence were estimated and association with risk factors was assessed. Escherichia coli was detected in 33.8% (95% confidence interval (CI) 29.9–37.9%) of the samples, of which only one isolate (0.2%) was E. coli O157. Escherichia coli contamination was higher in bulk tank samples (47.4%; 95% CI 34.0–61.0%) than in udder milk (34.7%; CI 30.1–39.4%), cottage cheese (27.0%; 95% CI 14.6–43.9%), and yoghurt 10.5% (95% CI 2.9–24.8%). For the animal-level E. coli contamination, only the study area was identified as a risk factor. Risk factors such as types of milk containers, udder washing practices, hygiene, and management systems were associated with both farm-level and milk products E. coli contamination. Most (59.0%) of the farmers practice udder washing only before milking and the remaining did not practice udder washing at all. The mean coliform count in raw bulk tank milk was higher than the international standard (4.09 log10 CFU/ml). All the 42 E. coli isolates tested were multidrug resistant. The occurrence of E. coli is high, while that of E. coli O157 is too low. The milk-handling practices are poor in the study areas. The high prevalence of E. coli, as well as the high coliform count and higher multi-drug resistance may pose risk to public health and food safety. BACKGROUND: X-ray Computed Tomography dose levels have been varying among modalities and scanning body regions due to the absence of incessant routine follow-up. Thus, the study aimed to compute the dose index discrepancies in Ethiopia for the most recurring scan protocols (head, chest, abdomen, and pelvis). METHODS: A purposive sampling method was employed to select the hospitals due to the rare existence of functional CT scanners in Ethiopia. From the selected hospitals, a total of 1,385 (249 heads, 804 chests, 132 abdomens, and 200 pelvis) were collected in terms of standard dose metric values in the period of December 2019-March 2020. Patients' DLP was computed into mean value using IBM SPSS Statistics 20 software. From the mean DLP, we can compute the effective dose. RESULTS: Patients' dose level disparity was observed in this study though it is below the ICRP standard level for all body regions except for pelvis DLP (593.37 mGy-cm) at Black Lion. The dose level for the head and chest are computed within the recommended level at all hospitals. Effective doses for the pelvis at four hospitals (Teklehaimanot, Black Lion, ALERT, Paul's, and Ayder hospitals) were computed as 6.45, 8.90, 5.08, 6.54, and 6.84 mSv respectively, and the effective doses for abdomen at Ayder Hospital was obtained to be 8.90 mSv, which is above the recommended value. CONCLUSION: X-ray CT scanners are somewhat properly functioning although some sort of justification and optimization for pelvis and abdomen examinations are strongly recommended to implement as low as reasonably achievable principle. Aim: To assess the inter‐rater reliability of modified Downes' scores assigned by physicians and nurses in the Ethiopian Neonatal Network and to calculate the concordance of score‐based treatment for preterm infants with respiratory distress. Methods: We included preterm infants admitted from June 2020 to July 2021 to four tertiary neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) of the Ethiopian Neonatal Network that presented with respiratory distress. We calculated the kappa statistic to determine the nurse and physician correlation for each component of the modified Downes' score and total score on admission and evaluated the concordance of scores above and below the treatment threshold of 4. Results: Of the 1151 eligible infants admitted, 817 infants (71%) had scores reported concurrently and independently by nurse and physician. The kappa statistic for modified Downes' score components ranged from 0.88 to 0.92 and was 0.89 for the total score. There was 98% concordance for score‐based treatment. Conclusion: Incorporation of the modified Downes' score on admission for preterm infants with respiratory distress was feasible in tertiary NICUs in Ethiopia. The kappa statistics showed near‐perfect agreement between nurse and physician assessments, translating to a very high degree of concordance in score‐based treatment recommendations. Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) is an evidence-based neonatal resuscitation program designed for implementation in low-resource settings. While HBB reduces rates of early neonatal mortality and stillbirth, maintenance of knowledge and skills remains a challenge. The extent to which the inclusion of educational clinical videos impacts learners' knowledge and skills acquisition, and retention is largely unknown. We conducted a cluster-randomized controlled trial at two public teaching hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. We randomized small training group clusters of 84 midwives to standard HBB vs. standard HBB training supplemented with exposure to an educational clinical video on newborn resuscitation. Midwives were followed over a 7-month time period and assessed on their knowledge and skills using standard HBB tools. When comparing the intervention to the control group, there was no difference in outcomes across all assessments, indicating that the addition of the video did not influence skill retention. Pass rates for both the control and intervention group on bag and mask skills remained low at 7 months despite frequent assessments. To determine the effect of armed conflict and COVID-19 pandemic on the level and trend of surgical volume at Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Tigray, Northern Ethiopia.Methods: All major surgeries carried out over four consecutive years were included and subjected to an interrupted time-series analysis called segmented regression analysis to examine the effect of war and COVID-19 on level of and trend changes in major surgeries. The outcome was measured and estimated that there was a significant change in the number of major surgeries as a result of the conflict and COVID-19 pandemic compared to the baseline status.Results: We analyzed 29,877 major surgeries conducted during the study period. The results indicate that, before the beginning of the intervention period, on average 632 surgeries per month were performed [632.1 (95% CI: 575.8, 688.41)]. Right after COVID-19, however, this number dropped by 359 patients per month [− 359.3 (95% CI: − 486.4, − 232.2)]. During the war period, the number of surgeries decreased by 232 patients per month [− 232.7 (95% CI: − 408.5, − 56.9)].Conclusion: This study revealed that both COVID-19 and the war in Tigray have significantly reduced the number of major surgeries that could have been carried out in their absence at a large tertiary hospital in Northern Ethiopia. Background: School closures in response to the COVID-19 impacted children's education, protection, and wellbeing. After understanding these impacts and that children were not super spreaders, countries including Ethiopia decided to reopen schools with specified preconditions. But when deciding to reopen schools, the benefits and risks across education, public health and socio-economic factors have to be evaluated. However, there was information gap on status of schools as per preconditions. Hence, this study was designed to investigate status of schools in Southern Ethiopia. Methods: School based cross-sectional study was conducted in October 2020 in Southern Ethiopia. Sample of 430 schools were included. National school reopening guideline was used to develop checklist for assessment. Data was collected by public health experts at regional emergency operation center. Descriptive analysis was performed to summarize data. Results: A total of 430 schools were included. More than two thirds, 298 (69.3%), of schools were from rural areas while 132 (30.7%) were from urban settings. The general infection prevention and water, sanitation and hygiene (IPC-WASH) status of schools were poor and COVID-19 specific preparations were inadequate to meet national preconditions to reopen schools during the pandemic. Total score from 24 items observed ranged from 3 to 22 points with mean score of 11.75 (SD±4.02). No school scored 100% and only 41 (9.5%) scored above 75% while 216 (50.2%%) scored below half point that is 12 items. Conclusion: Both the basic and COVID-19 specific IPC-WASH status of schools were inadequate to implement national school reopening preconditions and general standards. Some of strategies planned to accommodate teaching process and preconditions maximized inequalities in education. Although COVID-19 impact lessened due to vaccination and other factors, it is rational to consider fulfilling water and basic sanitation facilities to schools to prevent communicable diseases of public health importance. Neonatal health is a significant global public health concern, and the first two days of life are crucial for newborn survival. Most studies on newborn postnatal care have focused on crude coverage measures, which limit the evaluation of care quality. However, evidence suggests a shift towards emphasising effective coverage, which incorporates the quality of care when measuring intervention coverage. This research aimed to assess the effective coverage of newborn postnatal care in Ethiopia while also examining its inequalities and spatial distribution. The study used secondary data from the 2016 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey, which was a cross-sectional community-based study. A total weighted sample of 4169 women was used for analyses. We calculated crude coverage, which is the proportion who received a postnatal check within 48 hours of birth and quality-adjusted coverage (effective coverage), which is the proportion who received a postnatal check within 48 hours of birth and reported receipt of 6 or more contents of care provided by health care providers. Concentration index and concentration curves were used to estimate the socioeconomic-related inequalities in quality-adjusted newborn postnatal care. The spatial statistic was analysed by using Arc-GIS. The crude coverage of newborn postnatal care was found to be 13.2%, while the effective coverage was 9%. High-quality postnatal care was disproportionately concentrated among the rich. A spatial variation was found in quality-adjusted coverage of newborn postnatal care across regions. The findings suggest that there is a significant gap in the coverage and quality of postnatal care for newborns across regions in Ethiopia. The low rates of coverage and effective coverage, combined with the concentration of high-quality care among the rich and the spatial variation across regions, highlight the need for targeted interventions and policies to address the inequalities in access to high-quality postnatal care for newborns. Background: Persistent inequalities in coverage of maternal health services in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), a region home to two-thirds of global maternal deaths in 2017, poses a challenge for countries to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets. This study assesses wealth-based inequalities in coverage of maternal continuum of care in 16 SSA countries with the objective of informing targeted policies to ensure maternal health equity in the region. Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data from 16 SSA countries (Angola, Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia). A total of 133,709 women aged 15-49 years who reported a live birth in the five years preceding the survey were included. We defined and measured completion of maternal continuum of care as having had at least one antenatal care (ANC) visit, birth in a health facility, and postnatal care (PNC) by a skilled provider within two days of birth. We used concentration index analysis to measure wealth-based inequality in maternal continuum of care and conducted decomposition analysis to estimate the contributions of sociodemographic and obstetric factors to the observed inequality. Results: The percentage of women who had 1) at least one ANC visit was lowest in Ethiopia (62.3%) and highest in Burundi (99.2%), 2) birth in a health facility was less than 50% in Ethiopia and Nigeria, and 3) PNC within two days was less than 50% in eight countries (Angola, Burundi, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Malawi, Nigeria, and Tanzania). Completion of maternal continuum of care was highest in South Africa (81.4%) and below 50% in nine of the 16 countries (Angola, Burundi, Ethiopia, Guinea, Malawi, Mali, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda), the lowest being in Ethiopia (12.5%). There was pro-rich wealth-based inequality in maternal continuum of care in all 16 countries, the lowest in South Africa and Liberia (concentration index = 0.04) and the highest in Nigeria (concentration index = 0.34). Our decomposition analysis showed that in 15 of the 16 countries, wealth index was the largest contributor to inequality in primary maternal continuum of care. In Malawi, geographical region was the largest contributor. Conclusions: Addressing the coverage gap in maternal continuum of care in SSA using multidimensional and people-centred approaches remains a key strategy needed to realise the SDG3. Opportunistic infections (OIs) are diseases that cause infections in people whose immune systems are compromised. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of OIs and associated factors among HIV-infected patients. Institutional-based cross-sectional study was done in Eastern Zone, Tigray, Ethiopia. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the data from 394 study participants through an interview method. The required sample size was determined using a single population proportion formula. Participants were selected using a systematic random sampling method. Data was entered and analyzed using SPSS version 22. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to find factors at p <.05. The prevalence of OIs was found to be 52% (95% CI [47.5, 57.1]). Occupation, CD4+ count, adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART), and functional status were independently associated with OIs. Background: In developing nations with fragile healthcare systems, the effect of war is likely to be much worse than it would be in more developed countries. The presence of COVID-19 will also likely exacerbate the war's impact. This study set out to determine the effect of armed conflict and the COVID-19 pandemic on health service utilization at Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. Methods: An interrupted time-series study design was used to analyze patient visits over forty-eight consecutive months (from July 2017 to June 2021) at inpatient, outpatient, and emergency departments. Data were analyzed using segmented regression analysis with a defined outcome of level and trend changes in the number of patient visits. In addition, negative binomial regression analysis was also used to estimate the impact of both COVID-19 and the war on patient flow. Results: There were 59,935 admissions, 876,533 outpatient visits, and 127,872 emergency room visits. The effect of COVID-19 was seen as soon as the Tigray regional government imposed comprehensive restrictions. Immediately after COVID-19 appeared, all the service areas exhibited a significant monthly drop in visits; [-35.6% (95% CI: -48.2%, -23.1%)] for inpatient, [-60.6% (95% CI: -71.6%, -49.5%)] for outpatient, and [-44.1% (95% CI: -59.5%, -28.7%)] for emergency department visits. The impact of the war became apparent after a lag time of one month. Controlling the effects of time and COVID-19, the war led to a significant fall in inpatient visits [-44.3% (95% CI: -67.2%, -21.5%)], outpatients [-52.1% (95% CI: -82.7%, -21.5%)], and emergency-room attendances [-45.0% (95% CI: -74.8%, -15.2%)]. An upward trend in outpatient flow was observed after the war [1,219.4 (95% CI: 326.1, 2,112.8)]. Conclusions: The present study has clearly indicated that the war and COVID-19 have led to a large reduction in admissions, outpatient attendance, and emergency department visits. The evidence from this study suggests that due to this double catastrophe, thousands of patients could not gain access to healthcare, with probable negative consequences. This study aimed to assess the barriers to and intention to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and the associated factors among adults in the Jimma zone, Ethiopia.Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study with multistage sampling was conducted with 621 participants from 16 April to 17 May 2022. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with the outcome of interest. Statistical p-value ≤ 0.05 was set at p ≤ 0.05. Qualitative data were supplemented with quantitative results.Results: The majority of the study participants (382 [61.5%]) intended to uptake the COVID-19 vaccine. In this study, travel history (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) = 2.18, 95% CI 1.23– 3.87), vaccination history (AOR = 2.64, 95% CI 1.69– 4.12), perceptions of infection prevention for COVID-19 (AOR = 1.97, 95% CI 1.28– 3.03), subjective norm (AOR = 2.27, 95% CI 1.52– 3.39), and perceived behavioral control (PBC) (AOR = 2.30, 95% CI 1.55– 3.41) were significantly associated with the intention to be vaccinated against COVID-19.Conclusion: More than half of the adult participants intended to be vaccinated against COVID-19. The study participant's traveling history, vaccination history, perception of infection prevention for COVID-19, subjective norms, and Perceived Behavioral Control were significantly associated with the intention to be vaccinated. Background: Leukemic patients are prone to infectious agents such as viruses due to dysregulated immune system resulting from infiltration of the bone marrow by malignant cells, chronic stimulation, reactivation of some viruses and viral pathogenicity as well as rarely from acquisition of a new infections leading to severe complications. However, the prevalence of these infections has not been systematically documented in resource-limited settings such as Ethiopia. Objective: To determine the prevalence of HBV, HCV, and HIV among adult and adolescent in-patients with acute leukemia before the administration of chemotherapy, at the Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted on 176 adult and adolescent inpatient Ethiopians, who were diagnosed with acute leukemia from April 2019 to June 2021. Socio-demographic characteristics and relevant clinical data were collected. Peripheral blood samples were collected and tested for HBV, HIV, and HCV using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and real-time PCR. Chi-square tests were used to assess associations between variables. Results: Of the 176 patients, 109(62%) were males. The median age was 25[IQR,18–35] yr, with a range from 13 to 76 year. The prevalence of HBV (positivity for HBsAg plus HBV DNA), HCV and HIV was 21.6%, 1.7%, and 1.7%, respectively. HBsAg was positive in 19 cases (10.8%). Among 157 HBsAg negative patients, 52(33.1%) were positive for Anti-HBcAg; of these seropositive cases, 47.5% were positive for HBV DNA. Most DNA positive, HBsAg negative cases (79.0%) had DNA concentrations below 200 IU/ml indicating true occult HBV infection (OBI). Of the 176 cases, 122 had a history of blood transfusions, but no statistically significant association was found between HBV infection and blood product transfusion history (P = 0.963). Conclusions: The prevalence of HBV, HIV and HCV in patients with acute leukemia was similar to the national prevalence level of these infections. Given the HBsAg positivity and the high prevalence of occult hepatitis B infection in our study, these patients may be at increased risk for chemotherapy related hepatitis flares. Leakage is one of the major problems facing the functionality and sustainability of dams. It occurs through the embankment body, reservoir, foundation, and abutments. This study was conducted to identify the main causes of the leakage problem at the Dora-1 dam, located in the northern part of Ethiopia. It is an earthfill dam with a height of 43.5 m, crest length of 454 m, and reservoir capacity of 4.67 million cubic meters. Part of the embankment body was wet and swampy up to 20 m high from the ground due to leaking water. Geological investigation, laboratory test of the construction materials (including grain size analysis, specific gravity and water absorption, Atterberg limit, free swell, dispersion, permeability, and shear strength), and electrical resistivity investigation were used to identify and pinpoint the possible causes of the leakage problem. Results of the study show that the favorable geological features responsible for the occurrence of leakage include: (a) geological contact between sandstone and moderately to highly weathered basalt unit at the left abutment, (b) the gravelly sand deposit at the central foundation and (c) dyke outcrop at the river course within the reservoir running in the upstream-downstream direction. Results of laboratory tests for clay core show medium to high compressibility, good to poor workability, and semi-pervious to impervious permeability when compacted. The water absorption and the percentage finer of the filter material don't satisfy the filter criteria and the shell material was found to be semi-previous. The anomalous in the resistivity survey result confirms the situation. Slope stability analysis of the embankment showed instability conditions at full reservoir level. The prognosis of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) on tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) treatment is based on the quantification of BCR::ABL1 fusion gene transcript copy number, harmonized by an international scale (IS) based on TaqMan-based real-time quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR). In Ethiopia, as in most low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), access to standard diagnostic, follow-up, and prognostic tools is very limited, and it has been challenging to strictly follow international guidelines. This seriously compromises clinical outcome, despite the availability of TKIs through the Glivec International Patient Assistance Program (GIPAP). Multiplex PCR (mpx-PCR), conventionally regarded as a "screening tool," offers a potential solution to this problem. A total of 219 samples from confirmed CML patients were assayed. In reference to qRT-PCR, the AUC of ROC curve for mpx-PCR was 0.983 (95% CI: 0.957 to 0.997). At the optimum cut-off value, equivalent to BCR::ABL1 (IS) transcript copy number of 0.6%, the specificity and sensitivity were 93% and 95%, respectively, with 94% accuracy. Albeit the sensitivity and accuracy of mpx-PCR decrease below the optimum cutoff of 0.6% (IS), the specificity at 0.1% (IS) was 100%, making it an attractive means to rule-out relapse and drug non-adherence at later stages of treatment, which is particularly an issue in a low income setting. We conclude that the relative simplicity and low cost of mpx-PCR and prognostic relevant cutoff values (0.1–0.6% IS) should allow its use in peripheral clinics and thus maximize the positive impact of TKIs made available through GIPAP in most LMICs. Background: Congenital unilateral pulmonary vein atresia is a rare anomaly resulting from failure of the pulmonary vein to incorporate in the left atrium. It is a very rare cause of recurrent respiratory infections and hemoptysis requiring a high index of suspicion for proper diagnosis and management in early childhood. Case presentation: We report a 13-year old Anuac (Ethiopia, Region of Gambela) male adolescent with a delayed diagnosis of isolated atresia of the left pulmonary veins despite early childhood presentation with recurrent chest infections, hemoptysis and exercise intolerance. Contrast enhanced CT of thorax with reconstructed planes confirmed the diagnosis. He underwent pneumonectomy for severe and recurrent symptoms and did well on subsequent follow ups after 6 months of pneumonectomy. Conclusion: Although a rare anomaly, congenital unilateral pulmonary vein atresia should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a child presenting with recurrent chest infections, exercise intolerance and hemoptysis to facilitate early appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Background: Little is known about bacteria that produce extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) and carbapenemase in patients with urinary tract infections (UTIs) in Tigrai, Ethiopia. The aim of this study was to describe the magnitude of ESBL- and carbapenemase -producing gram-negative bacteria among patients suspected of community- and hospital-acquired UTIs at a referral hospital in Tigrai, Ethiopia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Ayder Comprehensive Specialized hospital from January 2020 to June 2020. A 10– 20 mL sample of morning mid-stream and catheter urine was collected from consenting participants. Urine samples were cultured on cysteine lactose electrolyte deficient medium and MacConkey agar, and bacteria were identified using standard microbiological protocols. The Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method was used for antimicrobial susceptibility testing. The combination disk and modified Hodge tests were used detect ESBL and carbapenemase production, respectively. The data was entered into EPI 3.1 software and analyzed using SPSS version 21. Results: Overall, 67 gram-negative bacteria were recovered from 64 participants. Escherichia coli was the predominant isolate (68.6%), followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (22.4%), while ESBL production was found in both Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae (52.2% and 86.7%, respectively). Isolates recovered from patients with hospital-acquired UTIs were more likely to produce ESBLs (AOR= 16.2; 95% CI: 2.95– 89.5). Carbapenemase was produced by 4.3% of E. coli and 20% of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates. High resistance rates were found against tetracycline (84.8%), ampicillin (78.3%), amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (58.7%) for Escherichia coli isolates and against ampicillin (93.3%), sulphamethexazole trimethoprim (93.3%), cefotaxime (86.6%), and ceftazidime (86.6%), and tetracycline (73.3%) for Klebsiella pneumoniae. Conclusion: Most UTIs were caused by ESBL-producing bacteria, especially those that were related to healthcare. Microbiological-based therapy for patients with UTIs is essential at our study site due to high rates of ESBL and significant carbapenemase production with concomitant high rates of drug resistance to several antibiotics. Background: Obstetric fistula is a major public health concerns in Ethiopia. It is the most devastating cause of all maternal morbidities. Method: Data from the 2016 Ethiopian Demographic Health Survey (EDHS) was analyzed. A community-based unmatched case control study was conducted. Seventy cases and 210 non cases were selected using random number table. Data were analyzed by using STATA statistical software version 14. Multivariable logistic regression model was applied to determine the factors associated with fistula. Results: The majority of fistula cases were from rural residences. The multivariable statistical model showed that rural residence (Adjusted OR (AOR) = 5, 95% CI 4.26, 7.52), age at first marriage (AOR = 3.3, 95% CI 2.83, 4.60), poorest wealth index (AOR = 3.3, 95% CI 2.24, 5.01) and decision making for contraceptive use by husband alone (AOR = 1.3, 95% CI 1.124, 1.67) were factors significantly associated with obstetric fistula. Conclusion: Age at first marriage, rural residence, poorest wealth index and decision making for contraceptive use by husband alone were significantly associated factors for obstetric fistula. Intervening on these factors will reduce the magnitude of obstetrics fistula. In this context there is in-need to improve on avoiding early marriage through awareness creation to the community and developing legal framework by the policymakers. Furthermore, information about the joint decision making to use contraceptives should be disseminated though mass-media and interpersonal channels. Intervening on these factors will reduce the magnitude of obstetrics fistula. In this context there is in-need to improve on avoiding early marriage through awareness creation to the community and developing legal framework by the policymakers. Furthermore, information about the joint decision making to use contraceptives should be disseminated though mass-media and interpersonal channels. Background: Hepatitis B and C viruses are the major public health concerns of the globe. The two hepatotropic viruses share common modes of transmission and their co-infection is common. Despite the provision of an effective prevention mechanism, the infections caused by these viruses remain a significant problem worldwide, particularly among developing countries like Ethiopia. Methods: This institutional-based retrospective study was conducted between January 2014 December and December 2019 from documented laboratory logbooks of Adigrat general hospital serology laboratory, Tigrai, Ethiopia. data were collected and checked for completeness on a daily based, coded, entered, and cleaned using Epinfo version 7.1, exported and analyzed using SPSS version 23. Binary logistic regression analysis and Chi-square test (X2) assessed the association between dependent and independent variables. The corresponding variables with a P-value (P < 0.05) and 95% confidence interval were considered statistically significant. Results: Out of 20,935 clinically suspected individuals, 20,622 were given specimens and tested for hepatitis B and C viruses with total completeness of 98.5%. The overall prevalence of hepatitis B and hepatitis C virus was found to be 3.57% (689/19,273) and 2.13% (30/1,405), respectively. The positivity rate of the hepatitis B virus was 8.0% (106/1317) and 3.24% (583/17,956) among males and females, respectively. Additionally, 2.49%(12/481) of males and 1.94% (18/924) of females were positive for hepatitis C virus infection. The overall prevalence of co-infection for both hepatitis B and hepatitis C virus was 7.4% (4/54). Sex and age were significantly associated with hepatitis B and C virus infection. Conclusions: The overall prevalence of hepatitis B and C is low intermediate according to the WHO criteria. Although there was a fluctuating trend of hepatitis B and C through the years 2014–2019, the result shows moreover declining trend. Both hepatitis B and C share similar routes of transmission and affect all age categories but males were more highly affected than females. Therefore, awareness creation of the community about the methods of transmission, education about prevention, and control of hepatitis B and C virus infection, and improving coverage of youth-friendly services in health facilities should be strengthened. Back ground: HIV/AIDS remained among the common public health problems in developing country. Despite the extensive delivery of ART and improved coverage of the service access, still, man-made problems like war have negatively influenced the utilization of antiretroviral treatment services. The war in Tigray Region in the northern Ethiopia broke out in November 2020 and thereby has brought about an extreme damage on most of the infrastructure in Tigray, including the health institutions. The purpose of this study is, therefore, to assess and report the trend of HIV service provision across the war affected rural health facilities in Tigray. Methods: The study was conducted in 33 rural health facilities during the active war in Tigray. A facility based retrospective cross-sectional study design was conducted among health facilities from July 03 to August 05, 2021. Result: A total of 33 health facilities from 25 rural districts were included in the HIV service delivery assessment. A total of 3274 and 3298 HIV patients were seen during pre-war period in September and October 2020, respectively. The number of follow-up patients during the war period in January remained to be only 847(25%) which is significantly reduced with a P value<0.001. A similar trend was observed during the subsequent months until May. The trend of follow-up patients on ART significantly declined from 1940 in September (pre-war) to 331(16.6%) in May (during the war). This study also revealed a 95.5% reduction of laboratory service provision to HIV/AIDS patients during the war in January and with similar trends thereafter (P<0.001). Conclusion: The war has led to a significant decline of HIV service provision in the rural health facilities and most part of the region during the first eight months of active war in Tigray. Background: Insulin therapy can be inconvenient, painful, burdensome, and restrict patients' daily activities and health related quality of life (HRQOL) due to improper injection techniques or the nature of administration. Objective: This study aimed to assess insulin injection practice, HRQOL and predictors among patients treated with insulin at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH). Methods: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among diabetes patients on insulin therapy from May to June 2022. A structured questionnaire was used to collect patient characteristics and insulin injection practice. The validated Amharic version of an EQ-5D-5L tool was used to assess the HRQOL. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 26. The patient data were summarized using descriptive statistics. One-way ANOVA using Kruskal–Wallis H tests was used to assess factors that predict insulin handling practice scores. Multivariate linear regression analysis was used to assess factors affecting HRQOL among diabetes patients treated with insulin. The EQ5D-5L utility scores of the patients were calculated using disutility coefficients taken from the Ethiopian general population. Statistical significance was declared at p-value < 0.05. Results: Of 319 patients who agreed and completed the survey, 51.1% of them were males. Almost half of the participants (n = 158) were > 50 years of age. Among the study participants, 62.1% were only on intermediate acting insulin. A significantly higher proportion of participants 291(91.2%) in this study were taking insulin two times per day. Most of the participants 234(73.4%) had fair practice with a median insulin handling practice score of 38 out of 56. Patient characteristics such as age, educational status, occupation, disease duration, and type of diabetes were significantly association with insulin injection practice (p < 0.05). The mean ± SD utility score of patients were 0.89 ± 0.19 (ranged from -0.04 to 1). Being female (β = -5.42, 95%CI:-8.63,-2.21, p = 0.001) and treated for type-I diabetes mellitus (β = + 9.04, 95%CI: 4.23,13.85, p-value < 0.0001) were significantly associated with HRQOL of patients on insulin therapy. Conclusion: The study participants had fair practices in insulin handling, storage, and administration techniques, and it was seen that male and type one diabetes patients have a better quality of life compared to their counterparts. This study examines the effects of an exogenous change in family policy in Ethiopia on women empowerment and the allocation of resources toward child health. Empowerment is formalized as an unobserved latent variable based on a large set of questions pertaining to women's autonomy and decision‐making power. Exploiting the time and regional variation in the implementation of the law, the study finds that early implementation of the reform increases women's access to information, literacy and education levels, and their assertiveness toward family planning and domestic violence. In addition, more decision power in the hands of women is found to have a positive impact on investments in the health and nutrition of children. The findings suggest that factors that do not enter the individual's preferences may affect outcomes for individuals and emphasize the role of intrahousehold heterogeneity. Background: An unmet need for contraception is associated with unintended pregnancy and adverse maternal and childhood outcomes. Family planning counselling is linked with reduced unmet need for contraception. However, evidence is lacking in Ethiopia on the impact of integrated family planning counselling on the unmet need for contraception. This study aimed to examine the association between family planning counselling and the unmet need for contraception in Ethiopia. Methods: We used community-based prospective cohort study data from a nationally representative survey conducted by Performance Monitoring for Action Ethiopia between 2019 and 2020. Women who had received three maternal and child health (MCH) services (n = 769) - antenatal care (ANC), facility delivery and child immunisation - were included in this study. The primary exposure variable was family planning counselling provided during the different MCH services. A weighted modified Poisson regression model was used to estimate the adjusted relative risk (aRR) of the unmet need for contraception. Results: The prevalence of family planning counselling during ANC, prior to discharge, and child immunisation was 22%, 28%, and 28%, respectively. Approximately one-third (34%) of the women had an unmet need for contraception. Family planning counselling prior to discharge from the facility was associated with reductions in the unmet need for contraception (aRR 0.88; 95% CI 0.67, 1.16). The risk of unmet need for contraception was 31% (aRR 0.69; 95% CI 0.48, 0.98) less likely among women who had received family planning counselling during child immunisation services. However, family planning counselling during ANC was associated with an increased unmet need for contraception (aRR 1.24; 95% CI 0.93, 1.64). Conclusion: Strongest evidence was observed for moderate associations between reductions in the unmet need for contraception and family planning counselling during the provision of child immunisation services in Ethiopia. In this study, auto-correlated Mann–Kendall (MK) and Sen's slope estimator tests were utilized to determine trends of rainfall, temperatures, and characteristics of crop-growing season during 1980–2009. Moreover, the Van Belle and Hughes' for homogeneity of general trend and Pettitt's test for the occurrence of abrupt changes were applied. On monthly, Kiremt (June–September) and annual time scale, the MK-trend test for rainfall exhibited non-significant increasing trend, while in Belg (February–May) rainfall season exhibited non-significant decreasing trend at the most of the stations. On the contrary, temperatures showed significant increasing trends in annual and Belg at the 5% significant level. In Kiremt season, however, the maximum temperature showed non-significant increasing, while the minimum temperature showed non-significant decreasing trend. Results of homogeneity for general trend obtained by the Van Belle and Hughes' test seem fairly consistent with those of the MK-trend test. Moreover, results of Pettitt's test indicated a homogeneous trend in monthly, annual, and seasonal rainfall series and no break point was distinguished, except few stations. On the contrary, the abrupt changes were found to be quite variable in temperatures. The study also found that trends of growing season characteristics (June–September) have not changed significantly at the 5% significant level. Nevertheless, the high coefficient of variation in Kiremt rainfall (21–31%) as well as dry spell length (25–43%) in conjunction with the short nature of the length of growing period (68–90 days) had negative implications to crop production in the eastern zone of Tigray region. Local production of generic medicines in developing countries has a critical role to meet public health needs by ensuring the availability of essential medicines and providing patients' relief from the burden of unaffordable medical bills. Compliance with bioequivalence (BE) requirements increase the quality and competitiveness of generic drugs regardless of the source. In this regard, a regional BE center has been established in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to serve the needs of Ethiopia and neighbouring countries. The present study aimed to assess the knowledge and perceptions of health professionals working in Addis Ababa regarding local production and BE studies of generic medicines. A cross-sectional survey was employed and physician participants working at public hospitals and pharmacists from various practice settings were selected using convenient sampling technique. Data was collected using self-administered structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics was used to summarize the data and multinomial logistic regression analyses was used to assess predictors of health professionals' perception towards the source of drugs. Statistically significant association was declared at p-value < 0.05. A total of 416 participants responded and 272 (65.4%) of them were male. Nearly half of the study participants (n = 194) preferred the imported products. Compared to physicians, participants with diploma (AOR = 0.40; 95%CI: 0.18–0.91, p = 0.028) and bachelor degree and above holders (AOR = 0.32; 95%CI: 0.15–0.68, p = 0.003) in pharmacy were more likely to prefer locally produced products. Participants who practiced in pharmaceutical industries (AOR = 0.40, 95%CI: 0.22–0.77, p = 0.006) preferred locally manufactured products as compared to those practicing in the hospital. While a majority (321, 77.2%) believed in the advantages of doing BE studies locally, only 106 (25.5%) recognized that local pharmaceutical manufacturers did not implement BE studies for their generic products and lack of enforcement by the national regulatory body was raised as a reason for not conducting BE studies by most of the participants (67.9%). The present study revealed a modest preference by physicians and pharmacy professionals towards locally produced products. Majority of participants supported the idea of doing BE studies locally. However, manufacturers and regulators should devise ways to increase health professionals' confidence in local products. Strengthening local BE study capacity is also highly recommended.
