Thermally modified wood is typically used in external building elements and saunas. It is exposed to high and changing temperatures and humidity. Therefore, it is necessary to apply an appropriate finishing system related both to the selection of a suitable lacquer product or activating the surface of thermally modified wood before finishing. The aim of this study was to present methods of thermal modification of wood, surface activation and lacquer products recommended for finishing of thermo-wood in Estonia and Poland. The results of the investigations on the adhesion strength of waterborne and alkyd-urethane coatings to the substrate were presented. The possibilities of using cold barrier discharge plasma treatment to activate the surface of thermo-wood prior to finishing were discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
