On June 5, 2004, the University of Manchester hosted Turing 2004, a one-day conference jointly sponsored by the British Society, History of Mathematics, and Logic Colloquium. The conference celebrated Alan Turing's life and achievements. Janet Delve, University of Portsmouth, and Jeff Paris, University of Manchester, were the conference organizers. Andrew Hodges gave the program's opening talk on Turing's work in practical computing, electronic engineering, the cognitive sciences, applied mathematics, and mathematical physics. Hodges related a number of episodes from Turing's life, illustrating his combination of logical and physical insight. Hodges also spoke about the background to Turing's definition of computability. Jack Copeland continued the afternoon session by discussing the role Turing played in artificial intelligence. Copeland illustrated how the Bletchley Park Bombes were an early application involving the use of heuristics. He also spoke about the current thinking of the famous Turing test, which Copeland somewhat against the trend still believes has considerable value in the field.
