The article presents a comparative study which examines the teaching and learning beliefs of mathematics teachers in England and China. It reveals that English and Chinese teachers share the same beliefs on the nature of Mathematics and its importance in real-life situation. Chinese teachers are more concerned on the introduction of new concepts and methods, and role precise language than English teachers. The study suggests that Chinese teachers place greater emphasis on the scientific understanding of theory, and English teachers on the pragmatic understanding of theory.
