This article introduces abstracts on topics covered in the 18th annual conference of the British Psychosocial Oncology Society that was held at The Royal Marsden Hospital in London, England in December 2001. In the conference emphasis was given to the ways in which media presents cancer stories, which is a relatively untapped area in psychosocial work but has wide and serious connotations for both the public and people with cancer and their carers. An attempt was also made to highlight social aspects of cancer from the users perspective.
