The case for change In April 2022, a woman appeared in an Oxford court charged with procuring her own abortion under the Offences Against the Person Act 1861. B "it illustrates some of the absurdities of abortion law in England and Wales" b As will be shown in this article, underlying the laws that govern abortion are problematic understandings about women. For example, while qualified midwives can undertake vacuum aspiration and prescribe medical abortion medicines for miscarriage management, they cannot do the same in the case of an abortion, where two doctors must be involved.
