DRUG abuse education - Abstract
This article provides a detailed evaluation of a recent initiative in the field of drugs education through Theatre in Education (TIE) carried out by a local education authority in England. In this project, Year 10 children from 11 secondary schools devised and performed their own TIE pieces for local primary school children. The article gives an account of the project's rationale, a description of how it was initiated and supported, a detailed evaluation of its achievements and an honest analysis of its more problematic features. It is intended to provide evidence as to how and why the project was both original and successful and to draw recommendations from it. It is hoped that it will act as both an argument and as a model for similar initiatives, whether in the UK or in other countries, for those who wish to harness the art form of drama in the service of significant and pressing social issues.
