THIS PAPER INVESTIGATES physical impairment and disability in the c 5th to 6th centuries ad in England through a combination of osteological and funerary analyses. A total of 1,261 individuals, 33 of whom had osteologically identifiable physical impairment, from nine early medieval cemeteries were included. The funerary data for all individuals in each cemetery was collected, and the individuals with physical impairment were analysed palaeopathologically. The burial treatment of individuals with and without physical impairment was compared both quantitatively and qualitatively, and patterns within and between cemeteries were explored to investigate contemporary perceptions and understandings of impairment and disability. The results suggest that some people with physical impairment and potential disability were buried with treatment that was arguably positive, while others were buried with treatment that was either normative or potentially negative. This suggests that, in the same way as the rest of the community, individuals with physical impairment and potential disability had a variety of identities (that may or may not have been influenced by their impairment or disability) and could occupy different social spaces/statuses. More than 5.89 million people have died from COVID-19. Due to COVID-19, there is a need for organizations to reconsider their structures and systems in response to increased remote working and decreased face-to-face (FTF) interactions. This study analyzes organizational relationships, specifically the supervisor-subordinate relationship. This study examines the link between supervisor-subordinate immediacy and organizational identification in mediated communication. Participants from three nations (n = 1776) were explored to test the assumption that supervisor-subordinate immediacy explains organizational identification. The United States, Australia, and England were chosen as focal nations due to the differing government responses to the COVID-19 outbreak. Results revealed supervisors' perceived computer-mediated immediate behaviors and subordinates' perceived immediacy with their supervisors were positive predictors of organizational identity. U.S. supervisors were perceived to use higher levels of computer-mediated immediacy behaviors and have more perceived immediacy than Australian and English supervisors. This paper explores experiences and perceptions of physical impairment and disability in early medieval England, contrasting pre-Christian (AD 5th-early 7th centuries) and Christian (AD late 8th-11th centuries) communities through a combination of bioarchaeological, clinical, funerary, historical, and theoretical analyses. By comparing understandings of physical impairment and disability in the pre-Christian and Christian periods, this paper investigates how political rearrangements and the growing power of the Church might have influenced changing contemporary perceptions of physical impairment and disability. This research has found that the funerary treatment of individuals with physical impairment in the pre-Christian period was extremely variable within and between cemeteries, and there is evidence for arguably positive, normative, and potentially negative burial treatment. Although mortuary treatment of Christian-era individuals with physical impairment was somewhat variable, this variation was much more subtle. This reflects the overall Christian-era pattern in burial form, and strongly negative or positive mortuary treatment was not identified among the individuals with physical impairment. Based on this evidence, it is proposed that administrative and judicial standardisation, conversion to Christianity, and the spread of Christian morals and doctrine influenced the reduction in mortuary variability observed in individuals with physical impairment and/or disability in the 8th-11th centuries in England. Purpose: In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, this study aims to explore how working remotely might impact the superior–subordinate relationship. Specifically, this study examines how immediacy explains articulated dissent, considers how an individual's attitudes toward online communication predicts immediacy and articulated dissent and compares these relationships in England, Australia and the USA. Design/methodology/approach: Three nations were examined: Australia, England and the USA (n = 1,776). Surveys included demographic questions and the following measures: organizational dissent scale, perceived immediacy measure, computer-mediated immediate behaviors measure and measure of online communication attitude. Findings: The results reveal supervisors' computer-mediated immediate behaviors and perceived immediacy both positively predict dissent. Some aspects of online communication attitudes positively predict computer-mediated immediate behaviors and perceived immediacy. In addition, attitudes toward online communication positively predict dissent. National culture influences some of these relationships; in each case the effects were substantively larger for the USA when compared to the other nations. Originality/value: This study is the first to cross-culturally analyze dissent and immediacy. There has been a renewed call for a revaluing of informal caring in order to counter the way that caring is undervalued, taken for granted and invisible. Travel is one area where a detailed critique of this issue has emerged with the concept of 'mobility of care', however, this concept has only been applied in relation to younger age groups, and our understanding of mobilities of care in later life remains underdeveloped. By 'mobilities of care' we mean journeys made for the purpose of giving and receiving informal care and support. This paper draws on the mobility narratives of 99 older people (aged 55 and above) living in three locations in the North of England who participated in a two-year qualitative longitudinal study that explored the inter-play between mobility, wellbeing and life transitions. We focused on the experience of managing life transitions rather than assume that chronology per se determines wellbeing. Narratives of ageing emphasise the importance of getting out and about, and being socially connected active citizens. Our study demonstrates that for many older people getting out and about is not for leisure or utility purposes but to give support and care. As such, these journeys have a particular significance in the lives of older people and in the construction of roles, meaning and identity in later life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Smoking tobacco is both a pharmacological addiction and a serious social and public health issue. Smoking cessation services for pregnant women save babies' lives and have the potential to improve the health of families and communities. Engaging with pregnant smokers and their households towards quitting smoking requires a whole-team approach. Protected time for the specialist smoking in pregnancy team and freedom to develop the service improvement approach has been key in the setting described in this paper. The approach to smoking cessation described in this paper is of the quality improvement arm within the 'Saving babies' lives' bundle of interventions in Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The 'plan, study, do, act' model is described with a description of its implementation using sequential learning, enquiry, testing and being open to new ideas and approaches. Introduction: Cigarette smoking in English residents of Bangladeshi origin, particularly men, exceeds national estimates. Cessation outcomes and potential predictors of successful cigarette smoking cessation in this group await identification.Methods: This service review reports cessation outcomes and predictors of success for 324 adult English resident Bangladeshi origin smokers recruited into a project providing a specialist tobacco cessation service. Interview measures included sociodemographics, tobacco use and dependence. Cessation data (self-reported and validated) at 4 weeks was also collected. Cessation rate and predictors of successful cessation, modeled using multiple logistic regressions, are reported.Results: Clients' mean age was 45.59 (SD = 13.83) years. Thirty-three (10%) were females. Mean level of small area deprivation was 56.98 (SD = 5.37). Initial mean expired air carbon monoxide score was 11.66 parts per million (SD = 7.17). Thirty-eight per cent used combination nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) with behavioral support. Sixty-nine percent reported successful smoking cessation after 4 weeks, validated with carbon monoxide (mean =1.23 parts per million, SD = 1.32). Predictors of successful cessation were use of combined NRT with behavioral support (OR = 1.82, 95% CI = 1.07, 3.09), and community recruitment (OR = 1.85, 95% CI = 1.07, 3.22).Conclusions: English adult smokers of Bangladeshi origin resident in a highly disadvantaged locality, accessing community outreach services to help them quit and using NRT have validated short-term success rates greater than that locality's general population who access National Health Service Stop Smoking Services to quit. Objectives: To explore the self-reported oral health and health behaviours of a sample of Inner London Chinese elders and the impact of their self-reported oral health on their social functioning and eating ability.Design: Cross sectional.Setting: Luncheon clubs in Central and East London, UK.Subjects: 54 Chinese elders aged 54-81 years.Intervention: A structured questionnaire, administered by two interviewers in Cantonese.Main Outcome Measures: Knowledge and beliefs about the causes and prevention of tooth decay and gum disease, the oral conditions experienced in the previous twelve months and the impact of these conditions.Results: Overall health was rated more positively than oral health, although those who reported below average oral health were more likely to report below average overall health. Whilst over half thought that sugar and sweet food could cause tooth decay, only 19% thought that poor oral hygiene could cause gum disease. Over half thought that "hot air" caused gum disease. Three quarters brushed their teeth at least twice a day. Two thirds had experienced at least one oral condition in the previous twelve months, with the more elderly being more likely to report this. Social impacts affected 41% of the sample whilst 44% suffered at least one dietary impact.Conclusions: The burden of oral conditions is substantial, especially on the more elderly members, impacting on the performance of social functions. These burdens indicate a need for oral health services. Beliefs in the traditional Chinese explanation of "hot air" as a cause of gum disease were common. Aim To evaluate smokeless tobacco cessation in communities of South Asian origin. Design Multi-centre prospective cohort study. Setting Three tobacco cessation services offering specialist smokeless tobacco cessation outreach clinic support to South Asians ( Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani) resident in England. Participants A total of 239 South Asian participants seeking to stop smokeless tobacco use between November 2010 and December 2011. Measurements Socio-demographics, tobacco use and dependence, self-reported abstinence at 4 weeks and satisfaction measures. Findings Participants' mean age was 45 [standard deviation ( SD) = 13] years, were predominantly female (76%), of Bangladeshi origin (74%), either home carers (53%) or not working (29%). Sixty-three per cent were recruited from community locations, 21% through a clinical contact and 16% through friends and family. Mean daily number of smokeless tobacco intakes was 10 ( SD = 7) and the mean dependence score was 4.5 ( SD = 1.9). Sixty-three per cent of participants achieved continuous abstinence 4 weeks after quitting. Using nicotine replacement therapy ( NRT) versus not using it [ OR = 3.47, 95% confidence interval ( CI): 1.25, 9.62] and below median (≤8) daily smokeless tobacco intakes ( OR = 1.91, 95% CI: 1.07, 3.40) predicted successful abstinence. Conclusion South Asian smokeless tobacco users resident in England accessing services to help them stop appear to have short-term success rates comparable with smokers attending stop-smoking services, with higher success rates being reported by those using nicotine replacement therapy. Background Naswar is a niche smokeless tobacco product from Pakistan. There is little information about its availability and user characteristics. Methods This cross-sectional survey identified outlets selling Naswar in two wards of one London borough and interviewed a purposively recruited sample of 73 Naswar purchasers. Data were analysed using descriptive and chi-square tests (significance, P≤ 0.05). Results Of 65 outlets identified 15 sold Naswar. The purchasers’ mean (SD) age was 32 (±10) years and 63% had completed only secondary education. Naswar consumption was significantly associated with tobacco dependency, whilst starting Naswar use at a younger age, having lower education levels, using Naswar more frequently and being of Pakhtunkhwa origin was associated with high monthly consumption (P ≤ 0.05). Conclusions Naswar was widely available. Naswar purchasers of Pakistani origin were employed and young, but with limited education and little knowledge of Naswar's health impacts. Background The carcinogenicity of chewing tobacco is well established. It is predominantly used by the South Asian community in England. Little is known about the accessibility of the products available for use in England. Methods Wards with high proportions or numbers of residents from the South Asian community were identified using 2001 Census data. Within each ward product purchasers identified retail outlets and purchased chewing tobacco products from them. Results Chewing tobacco products were found in a broad variety of premises in all but one ward, and were easily accessible. Ninety-eight products were identified and purchased with a mean price of £1.82. Of the ninety four pre-packaged products purchased only 15% (95% CI: 8%, 22%) complied with legal health warning requirements. Conclusion The study indicates the need to improve compliance with legal controls and enforcement to protect the South Asian community from health risks associated with chewing tobacco products. This is an examination of the ethnic media use of French and British Muslims. A total of 677 Muslims participated in the study. Analysis reveals being an immigrant or a native of a nation does not significantly influence ethnic media use in France but does in Britain. Ethnic identification was also revealed as an influential predictor of ethnic media use among Muslims in France but not in Britain. Religiosity significantly predicted ethnic media use among British Muslims. Objective. To reflect on recent proposed tobacco control initiatives in the socio-cultural context of the smoking behaviours of UK resident Bangladeshi men. Design. Cross-sectional study using focus groups and one-to-one interviews conducted in English and Sylheti. Eighty-one men, aged 18-64 years, were recruited from the Bangladeshi community of Tower Hamlets, London, during 2002. Participants were purposively selected to reflect their age, place of birth and tobacco-use status. The discussions were tape-recorded and subsequently transcribed. The transcripts were analysed using 'framework' principles. Three of the current themes for tobacco control - smoke-free workplace environments, access to alternative sources of tobacco, and use and availability of nicotine replacement therapy - were used to organise the data. Results. Smoking initiation and use was confirmed as linked to gender, age, religion and tradition. Continued smoking was supported by anxieties about harassment in younger respondents, the migration experience of older respondents, and the unskilled employment opportunities available in the restaurant trade. These employment opportunities, whilst providing social support, did not support smoking regulations, in contrast to the practices observed in the general employment market. Levels of knowledge about the health risks of smoking varied by age. Three cheaper alternative tobacco types were readily accessible for use: contraband, roll-ups and traditional chewing tobacco in paan (chewing tobacco mixed with areca nut rolled in a betel leaf). Despite the latter's associations with use by women, younger respondents described the transition to chewing tobacco in paan as a smoking cessation aid instead of nicotine replacement therapy. There was confusion about the purpose, availability and efficacy of nicotine replacement therapy. Respondents reported isolation and marginalisation from current tobacco control initiatives, including much NHS Stop Smoking Service provision. Conclusion. The socio-cultural context of the smoking behaviours of this group of Bangladeshi men was linked to a reported isolation and exclusion from current tobacco control initiatives. These initiatives should be inclusive and address the reported needs of this community. The findings have implications for service development. The integrity of species is not fixed and may vary geographically. Here we investigate the geographic distributions and interactions of species in the Tegenaria atrica group (Araneae: Agelenidae). Detailed mapping of T. saeva and T. gigantea in England and Wales shows them to be broadly allopatric in southern England with a tightly defined, and possibly long-standing, narrow zone of parapatry in central southern England. In the north of England (Yorkshire), by contrast, the species are broadly sympatric as a result of recent range expansions. GIS techniques are used to map the species distributions and to quantify, we believe for the first time, the intimacy of interspecific interactions. The extent and nature of hybridization in these two areas is examined through regression and multivariate analyses of morphology. We show that the relative incidence of hybridization is much greater in Yorkshire than within the parapatric zone in the south. Clear patterns of asymmetric introgression are observed in both northern and southern England, with a greater impact of T. gigantea on T. saeva than vice versa. We find no sign of morphological reproductive character displacement at the zone of parapatry that might indicate reinforcement, although we cannot exclude more subtle effects, for example via cuticular pheromones. The integrity of these two species seems to be breaking down in northern England, a process that might gain momentum as the gene pools become more similar. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective To compare public perceptions and patient perceptions about back pain and its management with current clinical guidelines. Design A survey using a quota sampling technique. Setting On-the-street in South Derbyshire in the UK. Subjects 507 members of the general population aged between 20 and 60 years, including a representative subsample of 40% who had experienced back pain in the previous year. Survey To test knowledge and perceptions of back pain and its best management using statements based on The Back Book which was produced in conjunction with the Royal College of General Practitioners and based on best available evidence. In addition expectations of back pain management and outcome were investigated. Results Forty percent of this sample had experienced back pain during the previous year, more than half of whom had consulted their GP. More than half believed the spine is one of the strongest part of the body, but nearly two thirds incorrectly believed that back pain is often due to a slipped disc or trapped nerve. Two thirds expected a GP to be able to tell them exactly what was wrong with their back, although slightly fewer among those who had consulted. Most expected to have an X-ray, especially if they had consulted. Most recognised that the most important thing a GP can do is offer reassurance and advice. The responses were not related to age, gender or social class. Those who had consulted appeared to have slightly more misconceptions: this could be partly due to people with more severe problems or more misconceptions being more likely to consult, but also suggests either that GPs are still giving inaccurate information or at least failing to correct these misconceptions. Conclusions The problem of managing back pain might be reduced by closing the gap between the public’s expectations and what is recommended in the guidelines through the promotion of appropriate health education messages. Aim: To assess the use of dental services, barriers to uptake of dental care and attitudes to regular dental examinations and the prevalence of tobacco and paan chewing habits in a group of Bangladeshi medical care users.Design: Multi-centre cross-sectional study.Setting: Four general medical practices' waiting areas in Tower Hamlets.Subjects: Bangladeshi adults aged 40 years and over.Intervention: An interview schedule.Main Outcome Measures: The prevalence of tobacco smoking and paan chewing with or without the addition of tobacco. The use of dental services, barriers to the use of dental services and attitudes to regular dental examinations.Results: Results were obtained from 158 subjects (response rate 85%). 25% of the whole sample had never visited a dentist. These were significantly (P < 0.05) more likely to be women, who also thought regular check-ups were of little value. In their use of health services 73% experienced language difficulties. 33% of the sample were tobacco smokers. Paan was chewed by 78% of the sample with significantly (P < 0.05) more females than males adding tobacco to their quid and chewing more frequently than males.Conclusion: There are considerable barriers to be overcome if dental practices are to be the site for oral cancer screening and oral health promotion in this population. There are sex differences in reported behaviour and attitudes about use of dental services and in tobacco and paan use in this Bangladeshi sample. This article presents two important minutebooks discovered in the home of the ex-secretary of the Coventry, England branch which will allow historians to tread thorough account of the national development of the Communist Party's work in the trade union movement in the 1920s. The minutes of the Coventry branch are extant from November 1925 to August 1930, and those of the Midland Bureau of the Minority Movement from its inception in September 1929 to February 1931. They are available in photocopied form in the Modern Records Centre at the University of Warwick. These sources trace in some detail the development of the branch of Minority Movement and in particular debates over the implementation of national policy and its application in the trade union branches and workplaces. Capitalism was supposed to be entering a potential revolutionary crisis, and it was therefore necessary to abandon the slogan force the leaders to fight, and to lead worker struggles independently. Where possible, revolutionary trade unions were to be set up, separate from and in opposition to the reformist unions. During 1928 the Minority Movement was in a state of confusion, with leading members like Arthur Horner and A. J. Cook voicing criticisms of the new strategy.

BackgroundLittle is known of paan quid with tobacco (PQT), a hand-made mixture of smokeless tobacco, areca nut, lime and flavourings in a betel leaf, despite its wide use in south Asian communities. This study has explored the price, tobacco types, brands and ingredient weights in vendor assembled PQT in London (England).MethodsThis cross-sectional study identified 31 commercial outlets selling PQT. Outlet staff were invited to assemble PQT for purchase. Individual ingredients were identified and weighed using a calibrated scale. Free nicotine availability was assessed in the laboratory. The data were analysed using frequencies, means, t test and Pearson correlations. Significance was set at p<0.05.Results73 samples were assembled and purchased. Mean total PQT weight was 10.06 g (95% CI 9.26 to 10.86). Mean price was £1.43 (range £0.50–3.50), which varied by location (p=0.001). The most common smokeless tobacco type was zarda (64.4%). Mean tobacco weight was 0.65 g (95% CI 0.56 to 0.76) and the mean lime weight was 0.58 g (95% CI 0.41 to 0.75). While other ingredients did not vary, tobacco and lime mean weights varied by location (p=0.01). Tobacco and lime weights correlated positively (r=0.427, p=0.01). The pH of the tobacco and lime mix varied between 12.2 and 12.5, indicating 99% free nicotine availability.ConclusionsVendor assembled PQT shares similar ingredients but varies by assembly locality, price and tobacco and lime weights.
