Objective: To provide a preliminary descriptive investigation of Denplan patients in the North West Region, by plotting the age/gender and payment banding distribution, and to identify the area types where Denplan patients live and the areas in the North West Region where Denplan practices are most likely to thrive.Setting: North West Region of EnglandSubjects and Materials: The study included Denplan patients resident in the North West Region. Age/gender and payment banding frequency distributions were constructed. A market penetration ranking report using the Target Market level of the Super Profiles geodemographic classification was produced by a spreadsheet analysis in Microsoft Excel. A Lorenz curve was plotted to graphically represent the output of the market penetration analysis. Following the market penetration analysis the enumeration districts (EDs) of the six top ranked Target Markets in the North West Region were identified and mapped out across the Region. Finally, the number and percentage of EDs in the six top ranked Target Markets were identified for each health authority in the Region.Results: 47,106 patients were registered with Denplan. In all but one 5-year age band (16-20-year-olds) female patients were in the majority. Patients were concentrated (40.5%) into the 40-55 age group. Nearly 50% (22,329) of patients were allocated to the second lowest payment banding. Under 0.5% of patients (N = 199) were categorised into the highest payment band. The Target Markets at the top of the penetration ranking were more affluent in nature, with a strong rural element and an older demographic profile as part of their descriptive titles. At the bottom of the ranking deprived area types with young demographic profiles predominated. About one half (49.9%) of Denplan patients were present in just over a quarter (25.7%) of the total population of the North West Region. The Lorenz curve demonstrated that Super Profiles at Target Market level had an effectiveness of 37.9% in segmenting the population of the North West Region according to Denplan registration status.Conclusions: The population using this service in the North West Region tend to be from more mature, rural and affluent populations. The article presents the preliminary findings from a study of the relationship between crime and social disadvantage in Merseyside, northwest England. According to data, calls to the police were about property crime, disorder such as domestic disputes and drunkenness, road traffic offenses, and crime against person such as assault, rape and homicide. It was found that crime hot spots coincided with a number of disadvantaged inner city areas, specifically Liverpool City, Bootle, Huyton to the east of Liverpool and the town of Birkenhead on the Wirral peninsular to the west. Data analysis also showed the relation of high crime areas with social disorganization risk factors, residential segregation of disadvantaged people, socio-ethnic mix, social class and social cohesion.

The creation of the Read Thesaurus was a unique undertaking, involving over 2000 clinicians. This clinically-led, multidisciplinary enterprise posed many organisational and professional challenges. The process of term collection and integration and the problems encountered are described. A brief account is given of the large task of maintenance and refinement. This paper looks at the practical and cultural aspects and describes how problems were tackled by good organisation, clear guidelines and much goodwill.

1. An epidemiological study of iron status in general practice has been undertaken. An age-sex register was established and a 10% stratified random sample (194 males and 220 females) of the patients above the age of 15 years was studied. A full blood count, serum Fe concentration, transferrin saturation and serum ferritin concentration were measured and correlated with clinical features associated with Fe deficiency. 2. The geometric mean for serum ferritin for males was 77 micrograms/l (20-196 micrograms/l) and for females 37 micrograms/l (8--177 micrograms/l). A low serum ferritin (male less than 30 micrograms/l, female less than 20 micrograms/l) in the absence of anaemia was found in fifteen males and thirty-five females. In this group forty patients had clinical features which are aetiologically associated with Fe deficiency. The incidence of similar features in a control group of thirty-three patients was seven. 3. It is suggested that this is indirect evidence that serum ferritin concentration is the most sensitive monitor of Fe status enabling the detection of pre-anaemic Fe deficiency.
