Abstract

The article cites diseases of small ruminants discussed in the Veterinary Laboratories Agency's disease surveillance report for England and Wales. Clostridium sordellii and Fusobacterium necrophorum funduliforme were isolated from the abomasum of a five-month-old Lleyn lamb. An abomasal worm burden of 13,100 Haemonchus contortus worms was identified in Kent, England. Polyarthritis caused by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae was diagnosed in three yearling sheep examined at Carmarthen, Wales.

Abstract

The article reports on the study conducted by researchers at the University of Nottingham School of Veterinary Medicine and Science in England, in partnership with the Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition, showing that curcumin added to a laboratory model of equine arthritis caused substantial reductions in cartilage loss caused by an inflammatory stimulus. The finding shows that adding curcumin to a horse's diet can serve as a protection against such maladies as arthritis. Curcumin is a component in the Indian spice turmeric.
