Radial gates are more common than vertical sluice gates for a number of reasons. They are simpler to use, cause less flow disturbance, require less lifting force, and deliver better discharge. Radial gates are commonly used in new barrages, such as the New Assuit Barrage. Prior researchers used physical investigations to study the efficiency of stilling basin downstream radial gates, but physical studies cost a lot of money and time, so numerical solutions should be investigated. The current study aimed to explore numerically the influence of stilling basin shape and baffle block arrangement on the stability of bed protection, near-bed velocity, energy dissipation, and hydraulic jump characteristics downstream of radial gates. Different 12 discharges were investigated, and their results were compared with previous physical results to verify the performance of the numerical results. The results obtained from the numerical model from all trials are almost identical to the physical model results. Five different alternative designs were carried out numerically to enhance the design of the New Assuit Barrage (NAB) spillway stilling basin. Results showed that alternatives 4 (changing the geometry of the basin by removing the end step and concrete slab) and 5 (as alternative 4 in addition to adding rounded baffle blocks presented in two rows arranged in a staggered way) gave good velocity distribution with low turbulence, low values of near-bed velocities, and stability of bed protection. Multi-vent regulators are widely used in Egypt. Operation system of gates affects the characteristics of the flow downstream (DS) of multi-vent regulators. The current study aimed toward introducing the artificial intelligence technique as a new modeling tool in the prediction of the characteristics of the flow downstream of multi-vent regulators under the management and operating systems of multi-gates. Specially Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is utilized in the current study in conjunction with experimental data to predict the relative length of the submerged hydraulic jump (HJ) occured DS of multi-vent regulators under the different cases of gates operation. The results show that ANN technique is very successful in simulating the relative submerged hydraulic jump length occurred in stilling basins downstream of multi-vent regulators better than multiple linear regression (MLR). By 2017, Egypt is expected to finish its sixth hydropower plant which is associated with the new Assiut barrage. Based on any hydraulic structure's design, there is enormous kinetic energy created downstream of the gates. This super power water jet generated under dams/barrage gates creates a destructive scouring effect downstream of the gates. In this work, a novel approach for hydrokinetic energy application is presented. The new approach proposes installing a farm of hydrokinetic turbines on the stilling basin of the spillways of the barrage's gate. This approach does not only magnify the total electric energy which was untapped in the past but also dissipates the enormous kinetic energy downstream of the gates. The total expected captured electric power from the barrage reaches 14.88 MW compared to 32 MW rated value of the existing hydropower plant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Barrage regulators are considered as one of the most important projects in the Egyptian irrigation practice, which is obvious by its controlling of the released discharge and both of upstream and downstream water levels. In the present time, the ministry of water resources and irrigation starts to construct new barrages on the River Nile instead of the oldest ones, which are not able to withstand the requirements of increasing head difference between the upstream and downstream water levels upon the gates. The present study was focused on investigating the effect of different shapes of stilling basins of regulator on the length of the submerged hydraulic jump, velocity profiles along the apron, and local scour downstream regulator floor. Extensive experimental program was conducted on a re-circulating flume with 1.0m wide, 26.0m long and 1.2m deep, with discharges range from 40 to 190l/s. The relative velocity near bed, and shear Reynolds number were studied to fix the best shape of stilling basin that could reduce both of length of submerged hydraulic jump and local scour downstream stilling basin. Statistical equation was developed to correlate the length of submerged jump with the other independent parameters. Finally, clear matching of results from the length of jump and velocity analysis was investigated. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
