A new report from Assiut University in Egypt presents research on ophthalmic antiinfectives. The study focuses on the synthesis of norfloxacin hydroxamic acid derivatives with the aim of targeting additional drug targets. The researchers found that several compounds showed promising activity against various bacteria, with some demonstrating a novel mechanism of action. The addition of metal-chelating and lipophilic groups to norfloxacin resulted in compounds that inhibit DNA gyrase/topoisomerase IV and bacterial cell wall synthesis.
