(1) Background: During 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic was threatening healthcare services and workers, and acquiring immunity was an option to stop or limit the burden of this pandemic. Herd immunity was a top priority worldwide as the virus was spreading rapidly. It was estimated that 67% of the total global population should be immunized against COVID-19 to achieve herd immunity. The aim of the current study is to investigate different perceptions of healthcare workers in the Kingdom of Bahrain and Egypt using an online survey in an attempt to evaluate their awareness and concerns regarding new variants and booster doses. (2) Methods: This study conducted a survey on healthcare workers in the Kingdom of Bahrain and Egypt about their perception and concerns on the COVID-19 vaccines. (3) Results: The study found that out of 389 healthcare workers 46.1% of the physicians were not willing to take the booster doses (p = 0.004). Physicians also did not support taking the COVID-19 vaccine as an annual vaccine (p = 0.04). Furthermore, to assess the association between the type of vaccine taken with the willingness of taking a booster vaccine, healthcare workers beliefs on vaccine effectiveness (p = 0.001), suspension or contact with patients (p = 0.000), and infection after COVID-19 vaccination (p = 0.016) were significant. (4) Conclusion: Knowledge about vaccine accreditation and regulation should be dispersed more widely to ensure that the population has a positive perception on vaccine safety and effectiveness. Background: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy can cause severe maternal and fetal acute morbidity and mortality. Women with pre-eclampsia have been found to have alterations in calcium and vitamin D metabolism. There are conflicting results regarding the role of vitamin D deficiency in the development of pre-eclampsia. The aim was to compare 25 (OH) D level in patients with pre-eclampsia, eclampsia and normotensive pregnant women as well as to study the prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency among the 3 groups. Patients and methods: Two hundred patients with pre-eclampsia, 100 with eclampsia and 200 normotensive pregnant controls were compared as regards vitamin D level. Results: Mean 25(OH)D level was lower in the pre-eclampsia (14.8 ± 5.4 ng/mL) and in the eclampsia group (10.5 ± 1.6 ng/mL) than in the pregnant controls (19.5 ± 6.5 ng/mL) (P = 0.002). This difference was only significant between the eclampsia group and the pregnant controls (P = 0.02). All eclampsia cases had vitamin D insufficiency as compared to 17.5% in the pre-eclampsia group and 39.5% in the control group. Deficiency of vitamin D (<12 ng/mL) was 47.5% in the pre-eclampsia group, 80% in the eclampsia group and only 10.5% in the control group (P = 0.035). Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent among Egyptian pregnant females. Our study supports the hypothesis that low vitamin D level can play a role in the development of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. Thus, supplementation might prevent or delay the development of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia especially in patients at a high risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives Clinical manifestations of sickle cell disease (SCD) result from sickling of Hb S due to oxidation, which is augmented by accumulation of oxygen-free radicals. Deficiencies in normal antioxidant protective mechanism might lead to clinical manifestations of SCD like vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) and acute chest syndrome (ACS). The glutathione system plays an important role in the removal of endogenous products of peroxidation of lipids, thus protecting cells and tissue against damage from oxidative stress. Impairment of the glutathione system due to genetic polymorphisms of glutathione S-transferase (GST) genes is expected to increase the severity of SCD manifestations. This report describes a case control study aimed at studying the ethnic-dependent variation in the frequency of GST gene polymorphisms among participants selected from the Egyptian population and to find out the association between GST gene polymorphisms and the severity of SCD manifestations. Methods We measured the frequency distribution of the three GSTs gene polymorphisms in 100 Egyptian adult SCD patients and 80 corresponding controls. GSTM1 and GSTT1 genotypes were determined by multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR). GSTP1 genotyping was conducted with a PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism assay. Results The GSTM1 null genotype was significantly associated with ACS and VOC (P = 0.03 and 0.01, respectively). The GSTT1 null genotype was associated with significantly increased requirement of blood transfusion (P = 0.01). Absence of both GSTM1 and GSTT1 genes was significantly associated with pulmonary hypertension (P = 0.04). The non-wild-type GSTP1 polymorphism was not associated with clinical manifestations of SCD. Discussion Some GST gene polymorphisms were significantly associated with the worsening of the clinical manifestations of SCD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
