Information is provided on the workshop titled "The Many Faces of Late Socialism: The Individual in the Eastern Bloc, 1953-1988" held at the University of Cologne in Cologne, Germany from May 26-28, 2016. Topics, including the Yugoslavian Stalinist Obrad Doroslovački, the Soviet Union political party the Communist Party, totalitarian features of socialism, the death of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, perestroika and socialism in Eastern Europe, are discussed.

The article focuses on perestroika doctrines related to Soviet Union's restructuring approaches in different literary works. Topics discussed include illustration of philosopher Plato's philosophy regarding noble lie conditions with analysis of Communism disruption in Soviet Union and Eastern Europe; determination of perestroika issues with utopian traditions in the "Perestroika: New Thinking for Our Country and the World" book; and perestroika relationship with sophistic conditions.

The article discusses the transformation of Central and and Eastern European governments from Communism to democracy during the collapse of the Soviet Union, with emphasis given to developments in Poland. The author is largely concerned with teleological aspects of this transformation, exploring whether or not democracy was ever the ultimate goal of Polish Communism, as was argued by the country's Communist leadership. The history of the Polish anti-communist Solidarity movement, largely led by the Polish Catholic Church, is examined, as is Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev's perestroika, or restructuring, political platform. The democratization process in various other Eastern European countries is also analyzed.

The aim of this article is to review and evaluate the condition and the development perspectives of the relations between the E.U. and its Eastern neighbors. The problem is analyzed in the context of the recent discussion on the 'Broader Europe" concept. The current dominant model of the relations between the E.U. and Eastern European countries is described in the article using the 'circular discourse" and 'circular interaction" terms. This article is aimed to reveal the initial theoretical and geo/political preconditions that helped this model to become the dominant theoretical and practical approach in the field of E.U.-East Europe relations, to uncover the logics of its functioning and the implications of its realization to Lithuania and the other new E.U. member states. There has been a growing debate about the ethics of management buy-outs (MBOs). One possible criticism of the MBO is that it serves the interests of incumbent management at the expense of shareholders. In this paper we develop the general arguments concerning the ethical aspects of the MBO to include other forms of buy-out beyond "going privates" and apply the analysis to MBOs as a mode of privatisation in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). MBOs are justified in this context post perestroika as a means of incentivising economic activity by giving managers an ownership stake in former state enterprises. The actual mode of privatisation, though, raises issues of social justice and the criticism that MBOs are at the expense of the broader social good. The ethical problem for the CEE is to balance the economic gains of a move to markets with the ethical risks to the agents of these markets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article looks at organized crime and its potential growth in Central and Eastern Europe. It mentions that the rates of reported as well as unreported crime have surged amid the virtual collapse of formal and informal social control in the region. Organized crime prior to the perestroika political movement are discussed which include drug-trafficking and art theft, the first of which is said to serve as a potential growth area where the shipment of drugs abroad generates significant profits. Changes and growth of organized crime following perestroika are also mentioned, one change of which is the increase in the number of targets for crime.

People of the Commonwealth of Independent States are well educated. Managers at all levels of business and government hold the equivalent of an American Master's degree in their academic specialization. Management is not a specialization there, nor a profession, but rather a function. Continuing education is legislated into the business and economic sectors, even into joint ventures. A vast array at schools and programs are organized into a sophisticated infrastructure of management education. Eastern Europeans are proud of these achievements and are moving rapidly to modernize and expand them further. Many of their cultural and societal values clash with ours, however. For instance, the U.S. educational system is based on a liberal arts philosophy. While those of Eastern Europeans and Germans follow Humboldt's philosophy of specialization beginning at a very early age and continuing on through the workplace. Therefore, our management concepts must be adapted to fit their work culture and environment to be successfully transplanted. In addition, Western European cultures are closer to those of Eastern Europe making their management much easier to adapt. A competitive advantage is thus available in cornering a share of the potentially lucrative markets. Eastern Europeans, however, are asking for American management assistance through joint cooperative efforts. By working together, the Eastern Europeans believe that we can restructure their economies. It would seem advantageous for us to return the compliment. A knowledge of how their managers have been educated, as Outlined here, offers a first step toward a common understanding.
