The occurrence of cold events over East Asia is modulated by the background mean state associated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The present study compares the processes of occurrence of cold events over East Asia between El Niño and La Niña winters. It is found that the difference in atmospheric mean state in El Niño and La Niña winters leads to different processes of occurrence of cold events over East Asia during boreal winter. The cold events during El Niño winters are closely related to negative Arctic Oscillation (AO) and those during La Niña winters are contributed by the Ural blocking. Both negative AO in El Niño winters and the Ural blocking in La Niña winters are followed by a Rossby wave train over Eurasia that strengthens the Siberian high and the East Asian trough, leading to cold anomalies over East Asia. The negative AO during El Niño winters is related to a tropospheric teleconnection that weakens the polar vortex, which is confirmed by numerical experiment with a linear baroclinic model. The Ural blocking is associated with the Arctic sea ice loss in the Barents Sea during La Niña winters through the reduced meridional temperature gradient and decreased zonal mean winds. The Arctic sea ice loss over the Barents Sea during La Niña winters is contributed by the development of anticyclonic anomalies induced by the enhanced stationary waves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The MJO‐related tropical Indian Ocean outgoing longwave radiation anomalies display a bimodal distribution, indicating two types of MJO events. The present study distinguishes 14 strong and 16 weak MJO events during the 37 winters from 1979 to 2016 and compares the circulation and climate over the mid‐latitude Eurasia between strong and weak MJO events. Cold anomalies appear over Siberia and East Asia during strong MJO events when the MJO‐related convection is located over the tropical Indian Ocean, whereas the temperature anomalies are weak over Eurasia during weak MJO events. The cold anomalies over Eurasia in strong MJO events are associated with the development of surface anticyclonic anomalies and the accompanying northerly wind anomalies. On one hand, the enhancement of surface anticyclonic anomalies can be attributed to the poleward Rossby wave packets triggered by the MJO convection over the tropical Indian Ocean. On the other hand, the strong convective heating over the tropical Indian Ocean can induce anomalous meridional overturning circulation between the tropics and mid‐latitudes. The anomalous divergent winds associated with the convective heating can reach western Siberia and the descending branch of the vertical cell contributes to the enhancement of surface anticyclonic anomalies and northerly wind anomalies, leading to cold anomalies over Siberia and East Asia. In weak MJO events, the poleward Rossby waves are weak and anomalous meridional overturning is of limited meridional extent. The East Asian trough (EAT) is a distinct component of the boreal winter circulation whose strength corresponds to the amplitude of the Northern Hemispheric stationary waves. In this study, the mechanism and climatic impacts of the intraseasonal variations of the EAT's strength are investigated through composite analysis and dynamical diagnostics. The significant roles played by the low-frequency Rossby wave (RW) and synoptic transient eddy (TE) are revealed. Before the peaks of strong EAT events, an upper-tropospheric RW train propagates across northern Eurasia and interacts with preexisting surface cold anomalies over central Siberia. This pattern intensifies the Siberian high and causes RW convergence toward the EAT, leading to 30% of the EAT's amplification directly via the RW-induced feedback forcing. Meanwhile, RW weakens the background baroclinicity and reduces TE activities near the entrance region of the North Pacific storm track. The TE-induced feedback forcing leads to another 30% of the EAT's amplification. The evolution and dynamical processes of the weak EAT events generally resemble those of the strong events with opposite signs. These results are consistent with the knowledge on the mechanism of the strong and weak EAT events regarding the role of RWs with additional quantitative description and provide new insights regarding the role of TEs. Variations of the EAT's strength exert significant climatic impacts on East Asia and its downstream region. Near-surface air temperature is below (above) normal over East Asia during the growth and peak stages of the strong (weak) EAT events and above (below) normal over North America afterward. This study reveals that the dominant time scale of intraseasonal snow cover variation over the eastern China is within 30 days by using the latest satellite snow cover data from the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS)/Terra product. The leading empirical orthogonal function (EOF) mode of 10–30‐day snow cover variation during boreal winter from 2004 to 2018 over the eastern China has two centers: northwest part of the eastern China and north of the Yangtze River. Composite analysis based on 25 snow events identified from normalized leading principal time series (PC1) indicates that the southeastward intrusion of surface anticyclonic anomalies and accompanying low temperature anomalies provide the temperature condition for snow events. Negative Arctic Oscillation induces mid‐latitude wave train and leads to the development of surface anticyclonic anomalies and upper‐level cyclonic anomalies over East Asia. The cyclonic anomalies induce ascending motion and anomalous convergence of water vapor fluxes over the eastern China, which supplies moisture for snowfall. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to better understand the ENSO impacts on climate anomalies over East Asia in early winter (November–December) and late winter (January–February). In particular, the possible mechanisms during early winter are investigated. The results show that ENSO is associated with a Rossby wave train emanating from the tropical Indian Ocean toward East Asia (denoted as tIO-EA) in early winter. This tIO-EA wave train in El Niño (La Niña) is closely related to a weakening (strengthening) of the East Asian trough, and thereby a weakened (strengthened) East Asian winter monsoon and warm (cold) temperature anomalies over northeastern China and Japan. By using partial regression analysis and numerical experiments, we identify that the formation of tIO-EA wave train is closely related to precipitation anomalies in the tropical eastern Indian Ocean and western Pacific (denoted as eIO/wP). In addition, the ENSO-induced North Atlantic anomalies may also contribute to formation of the tIO-EA wave train in conjunction with the eIO/wP precipitation. The response of eIO/wP precipitation to ENSO is stronger in early winter than in late winter. This can be attributed to the stronger anomalous Walker circulation over the Indian Ocean, which in turn is caused by higher climatological SST and stronger mean precipitation state in the Indian Ocean during early winter. This study examines the relationship between the Quasi‐Biennial Oscillation (QBO) and the variability of the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) winter. Here, we consider the effects of QBO winds in the lower stratosphere at 70 hPa. It is found that during the period of 1958–2019, the EAWM in the early winter months (November–December) is weaker in the easterly phase of the QBO (EQBO) than in the westerly phase of the QBO (WQBO). During EQBO, the northerly monsoon flow is weakened, and anomalous warm temperatures occur over East Asia. Moreover, components of the EAWM circulation system, including the Siberian High, Aleutian Low, East Asian trough, and East Asian jet stream, are all weakened. Our further analysis suggests that the QBO may influence the EAWM directly via a subtropical pathway. The EQBO tends to weaken the East Asian jet stream and shift it poleward, and the changes in the East Asian jet stream lead to a weakened EAWM. The activities of planetary waves are also changed in association with the QBO. Examinations of individual zonal wavenumbers (WNs) of planetary waves in the SLP field reveal that WN 1 is strengthened while WNs 2 and 3 are weakened during EQBO. Specifically, the anomalous WN 2 leads to weakening of the Siberian High, Aleutian Low, and East Asian trough, and the anomalous WN 3 reduces the pressure gradient between the East Asia landmass and the western Pacific.
