This chapter focuses on the nuclear developments in East Asia. The intensive development of the technology in the region can be explained both as the result of each nation's desire to create technocratic competency and a shared perception that the technology represents the most economical response to energy demands. Japan possesses the largest number of research and power reactors in the region. South Korea's program is also very strong. The commitment of China to the nuclear energy option is in the relatively early stages of preparation, as compared to Korea and Japan.
