The East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) is a crucial climate system in Asia, with significant social and economic impacts. Orbital‐scale variability of the EAWM during the Holocene and its associated mechanisms, however, are still not fully understood. Based on a high‐resolution transient simulation by a coupled climate model, we present here a continuous climate evolution of the EAWM in response to orbital forcing. Our simulated springtime EAWM variations, consistent with grain size records of loess, exhibit an obvious strengthening trend since the mid‐Holocene. In winter, a similar increasing trend is also simulated although not statistically significant. Our results suggest that the Holocene EAWM is basically controlled by meridional temperature gradients between high and low latitudes in both seasons. Other than northern insolation forcing, the feedbacks from Arctic sea ice and Eurasian snow cover also modulate the meridional temperature gradients, highlighting their important roles in driving EAWM evolution during the Holocene. Record of long‐term land temperature changes remains ephemeral, discontinuous, and isolated, thus leaving the common view that Pleistocene land temperature evolution should have followed ocean temperatures unconfirmed. Here, we present a continuous land surface temperature reconstruction in the Asian monsoon region over the past 3.0 Myr based on the distribution of soil bacterial lipids from the Chinese Loess Plateau. The land temperature record indicates an unexpected warming trend over the Pleistocene, which is opposite to the cooling trend in Pleistocene ocean temperatures, resulting in increased land‐sea thermal contrast. We propose that the previously unrecognized increase of land‐sea thermal contrast during much of the Pleistocene is a regional climate phenomenon that provides a likely mechanism in favor of the long‐term enhancement of the Pleistocene East Asian summer monsoon. The transport of dust aerosol in East Asia is affected by the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) and westerly circulation both for modern and geological periods. There are obvious seasonal changes in the intensity and range of EAWM and westerly jet; however, their impacts and relative contributions to East Asian dust transmission are still unclear. In this study, we use Regional Climate Model 4 (RegCM4) to simulate the changes in the East Asian dust cycle under present conditions, assessing the effects of EAWM and westerly jet on dust transport. The results show that the dust at the upper level is mainly transported by the westerly circulation, while that of the lower layer is mainly transported by the EAWM. In March, the westerly jet is located on the south side of the Tibet Plateau, and the high-level dust aerosol is transmitted eastward to the northern Pacific. Low-level dust is transmitted to the southeastern China with the influence of EAWM. With the northward shift of the westerly jet, the control range of the westerly winds increases in May and their correlations are weakened. In contrary, the impact of EAWM on the lower layer dust is enhanced. Due to the strengthened interaction between the westerly winds and the EAWM, they can both affect the middle-level dust transmission. The effect of EAWM is sensitive to the dust particle sizes. Under the action of EAWM, fine-grained dust is transmitted far away, while coarse-grained dust is limited to the vicinity of the source area. The Weihe Basin, enclosed by the Chinese Loess Plateau to the north and the Qinling Mountains to the south, is an outstanding, world-class continental site for obtaining high-resolution multi-proxy records that reflect environmental changes spanning most of the Cenozoic. Previous geophysical and sedimentary studies indicate that the basin hosts 6000–8000 m thick fluvial–lacustrine sedimentary successions spanning the Eocene to Holocene. This sedimentary record provides an excellent and unique archive to decipher long-term tectonic–climate interactions related to the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau, the onset/evolution of the Asian monsoon, and the development of the biogeography of East Asia. Owing to its location at the interface of the opposing westerly and Asian monsoon circulation systems, the Weihe Basin also holds enormous promise for providing a record of changes in these circulation systems in response to very different boundary conditions since the Eocene. To develop an international scientific drilling programme in the Weihe Basin, the Institute of Earth Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, organized a dedicated workshop with 55 participants from eight countries. The workshop was held in Xi'an, China, from 15 to 18 October 2019. Workshop participants conceived the key scientific objectives of the envisaged Weihe Basin Drilling Project (WBDP) and discussed technical and logistical aspects as well as the scope of the scientific collaboration in preparation for a full drilling proposal for submission to the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP). Workshop participants mutually agreed to design a two-phase scientific drilling programme that will in a first phase target the upper 3000 m and in a second phase the entire up to 7500 m thick sedimentary infill of the basin. For the purpose of the 7500 m deep borehole, the world's only drill rig for ultra-deep scientific drilling on land, Crust 1, which previously recovered the entire continental Cretaceous sediments in the Songliao Basin, will be deployed in the WBDP. As a unique continental archive, speleothem has been widely used in reconstructing paleoclimate change. However, the interpretation of Chinese speleothems δ18O has remained a subject of debate. Recently, a Community Atmosphere Model version 3 (CAM3) study indicated that the stalagmite δ18O from eastern China reflected the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) intensity rather than the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) intensity during Heinrich events. Here, we present a high-resolution speleothem δ18O record from Xianglong Cave in Shaanxi province, China, covering the period of 25.5–10.9 ka BP. The XL15 record shows similar variations with ice core record from Greenland and other climate records from China and India on millennial scale, including Heinrich 2 (H2), Heinrich 1 (H1), Bølling–Allerød (BA) and Younger Dryas (YD) events, supporting the connection between the Asian monsoon and northern high latitude climate. The δ18O amplitude of our record is larger than or similar to the stalagmite δ18O records from India during these events. In addition, differences of stalagmite δ18O in eastern China and the ISM region were observed on glacial-interglacial as well as decadal timescales. That means the ISM is not the sole controlling factor of Chinese stalagmite δ18O during Heinrich events. When subtracting the Indian stalagmite δ18O series from our XL15 record during H1 period, we found a significant negative correlation with sea surface temperature (SST) record of Western Pacific Warm Pool (WPWP). Consequently, our study suggests that the Chinese stalagmite δ18O is controlled by both the ISM and EASM on orbital-, millennial-, and decadal timescales. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The magnitude, rate, and extent of past and future East Asian monsoon (EAM) rainfall fluctuations remain unresolved. Here, late Pleistocene-Holocene EAM rainfall intensity is reconstructed using a well-dated northeastern China closed-basin lake area record located at the modern northwestern fringe of the EAM. The EAM intensity and northern extent alternated rapidly between wet and dry periods on time scales of centuries. Lake levels were 60 m higher than present during the early andmiddle Holocene, requiring a twofold increase in annual rainfall, which, based on modern rainfall distribution, requires a ~400 km northward expansion/migration of the EAM. The lake record is highly correlated with both northern and southern Chinese cave deposit isotope records, supporting rainfall "intensity based" interpretations of these deposits as opposed to an alternative "water vapor sourcing" interpretation. These results indicate that EAM intensity and the northward extent covary on orbital and millennial timescales. The termination of wet conditions at 5.5 ka BP (~35 m lake drop) triggered a large cultural collapse of Early Neolithic cultures in north China, and possibly promoted the emergence of complex societies of the Late Neolithic. Lake Qinghai, in North China, is the largest interior plateau lake in Central Asia, and is sensitive to climate change and the environmental effects of Tibetan Plateau uplift. We have obtained an almost continuous 626 m long sediment core from an in-filled part of the southern lake basin, which documents both the age of the origin of the lake and the evolution of the East Asian monsoon during the Late Cenozoic. High-resolution magnetostratigraphy provides a chronology back to ca. 5.1 Ma. Analysis of lithofacies and depositional environments reveal that the change from eolian to lacustrine facies occurred at ca. 4.63 Ma, corresponding to a shift from an arid or semi-arid to a more humid climate, which resulted in the origin of Lake Qinghai. Changes in sediment lithology and mean grain size indicate that the lake level fluctuated considerably, superimposed on a long-term trend from higher to lower levels in response to variations in the East Asian Monsoon. This archive is a significant additional source of information on regional and global environmental change, complementing the existing records from north China, which are mainly based on analysis of loess deposits. BSTRACT Primary (i.e. sugars and sugar-alcohols) and secondary (i.e. carboxylic acids) water-soluble organic compounds (WSOCs) in size-segregated aerosols from the urban and mountain atmosphere of China and from the marine atmosphere in the outflow region of East Asia were characterized on a molecular level. Levoglucosan is the most abundant compound among the quantified WSOCs in the urban and mountain atmosphere, whose concentration at the urban site was 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than that at the mountain and marine sites. In contrast, malic, succinic and phthalic acids were dominant among the measured WSOCs at the marine site. In the urban air, sugars except levoglucosan gave a bimodal size distribution with a large peak in fine range (<2.1 μm) and a small peak in coarse range (≥2.1 μm) during winter, being opposite to those in spring. In contrast, these WSOCs at the mountain and marine sites dominated in the coarse range but diminished and even disappeared in the fine range. Geometric mean diameters (GMDs) of the measured WSOCs in the fine mode at the urban site were larger in winter than in spring. Levoglucosan and carboxylic acids except for azelaic and benzoic acids showed a larger GMD in the coarse mode at the marine site probably due to an increased hygroscopic growth. The dynamics of glacial–interglacial monsoon variability can be attributed to orbitally induced changes in summer insolation and internal boundary conditions. However, the relative impacts of astronomical and internal factors on East Asian summer monsoon variability remain controversial. Here we combine proxy data and model results to evaluate the response of East Asian summer monsoon change to these forcings. δ 13 C of loess carbonate, a sensitive summer monsoon proxy from the western Chinese Loess Plateau, demonstrates coexistence of distinct 100-, 41- and 23-ka periods, in contrast to precession-dominated speleothem δ 18 O records in South China. Model results indicate that insolation, ice and CO 2 have distinct impacts on summer precipitation changes in East Asia, whereas their relative impacts are spatially different, with a relatively stronger insolation effect in south China and a more dominant ice/CO 2 influence in north China. Combined proxy data and model results indicate that East Asian summer monsoon variability was induced by integrated effects of summer insolation and changing boundary conditions (e.g., ice sheets and CO 2 concentration). Our proxy-model comparison further suggests that gradual weakening of the summer monsoon related to slowly decreasing summer insolation at astronomical timescales will be likely overwhelmed by the projected ongoing anthropogenic CO 2 emissions. The snow-darkening forcing of dust (SFD) is known to occur when dust-covered snow reduces surface albedo and absorbs more radiation, which causes snowmelt and surface warming. To date, few studies have focused on how SFD affects atmospheric circulation. In this study, we used a climate model to evaluate the influence of the SFD on seasonal changes in coupled monsoon westerlies over East Asia. The results indicate that the SFD causes anomalies in temperature, precipitation, and atmospheric circulation over East Asia. In December and January (DJ), the temperature increase over the Tibetan Plateau is significant, and the anomalous anticyclonic circulation causes a weakening of the westerly circulation during this period. In February, March, and April (FMA), the SFD causes an increase in temperature over the plateau and its eastern flank and widespread anomalous cooling to the north, which can be attributed to diabatic cooling of the upper atmosphere. These changes in thermal conditions lead to enhanced westerly winds and weakened East Asian winter monsoons during FMA. The enhanced westerly winds bring more precipitation to the East Asian continent. In May, June, and July (MJJ), only the Tibetan Plateau is significantly warmed in East Asia. At this time, the westerly circulation weakens, and the East Asian summer monsoon strengthens. The low-level atmospheric circulation shows anomalous westerly winds over South Asia. Quaternary monsoon changes in East Asia have been extensively investigated by proxy records from continental and marine archives. However, these proxy indicators often show controversial characteristics in terms of trends and rhythms, leading to perplexedunderstanding of orbital-scale monsoon dynamics. Here we review the orbital-scale monsoon variability and dynamics in East Asia by comparing multiple proxies from loess, lake, speleothem, and marine records with the HadCM3 modeling result. Evolutionary power spectra of loess grain size and sea surface temperature exhibit a remarkable shift from 41- to 100-kyr cycles across the mid-Pleistocene transition (MPT), whereas other proxy records (e.g. δ13C of loess carbonate, pollen concentration in lake sediments, and magnetic mineral compositions in marine sediments) display distinct and persistent precession cycles through the Quaternary, along with strong 100-kyr cycles after the MPT. Simulations with the HadCM3 climate model reveal that the effects of orbital parameters, ice volume, and CO 2 concentration on the temperature, precipitation, and southerly winds are seasonally and spatially different in East Asia. In the summer season, orbitally induced insolation plays a dominant role in driving changes in these three climate variables except for summer precipitation in south China (20-30°N), whilst annual changes in precipitation and temperature are jointly affected by insolation, ice volume, and CO 2. Proxy-model comparison suggests that several land-based proxies are sensitive to changes in summer precipitation, annual precipitation, and annual temperature, though their responses to astronomical, ice, and CO 2 forcing being quite different between north and south China. Our proxy-model comparison reveals that diverse expression of Quaternary climate periodicities was provoked by different sensitivities of marine and terrestrial proxies to seasonal and/or annual changes in precipitation and temperature, and by different responses of temperature and precipitation to insolation and ice/CO 2 forcing. We suggest that understanding of Quaternary climate change can be deepened by further comparison of quantitatively reconstructed paleotemperature and precipitation data with high-resolution regional climate modeling results. • Quaternary monsoon variability has been addressed by synthesizing multiple proxies from terrestrial and marine arcives. • The effects of insolation, ice volume, and CO 2 on climate elements are seasonally and spatially different in East Asia. • Proxy-model comparison suggests that insolation, ice, and CO 2 changes jointly affect rbital-scale monsoon variability.. • Future research should focus on comparison of quantitative paleotemperature and precipitation data with model results.
