The application of continuous fibre reinforced plastics for components in rail vehicles opens up enormous potential for lightweight construction, especially when carbon-fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) are used. For example, CFRP sandwich structures can be used to realize very light shell structures for car bodies or front cabins. However, these sandwich structures are usually subjected to high impact loads by flying gravel or other objects due to their exposed exterior position, which can quickly lead to critical damage in pure CFRP laminates. CG Rail GmbH in Dresden and its partners have carried out extensive theoretical and practical investigations on impact-resistant CFRP sandwich components as part of the development of the CETROVO lightweight train. The results of these investigations serve for an efficient predetermination of suitable layer structures in future projects by means of finite element simulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
