aim was to establish a large comprehensive database of patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) to enable surveillance and research of the disease. Methods: All patients diagnosed and/or treated for OSCC at Rigshospitalet, University of Copenhagen, Denmark in the period 2000–2014 were included. Rigshospitalet is a tertiary treatment center and covers the Eastern Denmark region, comprising nearly half of the approximately 5.8 million inhabitants of Denmark. Data on numerous variables regarding general information of the patients at diagnosis, their primary cancer, recurrence, treatment, prior cancers, and secondary cancers were collected from the Danish Pathology Register and by evaluation of medical charts. Results: One thousand three hundred and ninety-nine OSCC patients were included in the database (62% males). The median age at diagnosis was 63 years (range: 23–99 years). The most common anatomical location was the floor of mouth (38%). Among patients with known stage, 70.0% were diagnosed in T-stage 1 or 2 and 64.9% were diagnosed in N-stage 0. Most patients were treated with primary surgery (81.7% among patients with known treatment), of these 44% received adjuvant radiotherapy after surgery. The overall age-standardized incidence of OSCC per 100,000 increased from 2.15 in 2000 to 3.04 in 2014, with a significant annual percent change of 3.2%. Conclusion: We have established a consecutive, population-based database of 1,399 OSCC patients. This creates a basis for multiple studies that will elaborate our understanding of OSCC, and hopefully improve diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of OSCC patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Describe prognostic parameters of Danish male breast cancer patients (MBCP) diagnosed from 1980-2009. Determine all-cause mortality compared to the general male population and analyze survival/mortality compared with Danish female breast cancer patients (FBCP) in the same period. Material and methods: The MBCP cohort was defined from three national registers. Data was extracted from medical journals. Data for FBCP is from the DBCG database. Overall survival (OS) was quantified by Kaplan-Meier estimates. Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were calculated based on mortality rate among patients relative to the mortality rate in the general population. The association between SMR and risk factors were analyzed in univariate and multivariable Poisson regression models. Separate models for each gender were used for the analyses. Results: We found a marked difference in OS for the two genders. For the total population of MBCP, 5- and 10-year survivals were 55.1% and 31.7%, respectively. For FBCP, the corresponding figures were 76.8% and 59.3%. Median age at diagnosis for FBCP was 61 years and 70 years for MBCP. By applying SMR, the difference in mortality between genders equalized and showed pronounced age-dependency. For males<40 years, SMR was 9.43 and for females 19.56 compared to SMR for males 80+years (0.95) and females 80+years (0.89). During the period 1980-2009, the risk of dying gradually decreased for FBCP (p<.0001). The risk 1980-1984 was 35% higher than 2005-2009 (RR 1.35). Although the risk of dying for MBCP was also lowest in 2005-2009, there was no clear tendency (p=.1439). The risk was highest in 1990-1994 (RR =2.48). Conclusion: We found better OS for FBCP than for MBCP. But SMR showed similar mortality rate for the two genders, except for very young FBCP, who had higher SMR. Objectives: Nasopharyngeal malignancies are reported having decreasing incidence and reduced mortality. This study provides a nationwide update of the incidence and survival in Denmark.Materials and Methods: The Danish Cancer Registry (DCR) and Central Population Register (CPR) were used to identify all patients registered with nasopharyngeal malignancies between 1980 and 2014 in Denmark. We evaluated the age-adjusted incidence rate (AAIR), average annual percent change (AAPC) and relative survival (RS) and also constructed age-population-cohort (APC) models.Results: 911 patients were identified with a male:female ratio of 2.2:1, a median age of 57.7 years (range 2.8-98.3 years) and an overall median follow-up time of 2.7 years (range 0-37 years). The AAIR was 0.39 cases per 100 000 in 1980 and 0.28 cases per 100 000 in 2014 with an AAPC of -3.2 (95% CI: -7.5; 1.2, p = 0.1). The overall 1-year and 5-year RS rates were 76.3% and 42.1%, respectively. We found a significant age effect in the APC model for the incidence of nasopharyngeal malignancies, but no significant cohort or period effects.Conclusion: The incidence of nasopharyngeal carcinomas has slightly decreased over the last four decades, however insignificantly. Meanwhile, the relative survival has increased significantly in Denmark since 1980. The cause of improved relative survival might be attributed to altered treatment practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Human papillomavirus infection and p16-overexpression is a principal cause and favorable prognostic factor for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas but the value as prognostic marker in oral cavity squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC) is undetermined.Materials and Methods: All patients diagnosed with OSCC in Eastern Denmark in the period 2008-2014 were enrolled. Survival estimates were evaluated as overall survival (OS) and progression free survival (PFS) by Kaplan-Meier survival curves and multivariate Cox-regression analyses.Results: We included 575 patients from which 13% (n = 69) had p16-positive tumors. The 5-year OS were 55% and 62% for the p16-negative and p16-positive patients, respectively, and the 5-year PFS were 48% and 50%. In a multivariate survival analysis, p16-positivity showed no significant influence on OS (HR: 1.06 [0.67-1.70], p = 0.79) and PFS (HR: 1.11 [0.76-1.63], p = 0.58).Conclusion: In this population-based cohort of non-selected OSCC patients, we found no difference in survival outcomes when stratified on p16-overexpression status. Background: To describe relevant pathological parameters of Danish male breast cancer patients (MBCP) diagnosed from 1980 to 2009, and to relate these data to treatment, overall survival (OS) and standardized mortality rate (SMR)., Materials and Methods: The MBCP cohort was defined from national Danish registers. A total of 643 MBCP were identified with tissue available in 457. Among these, 384 were primary operable. Where tissue blocks were available, tumor type, grade, estrogen receptor (ER), progesteron receptor (PgR) and androgen-receptor (AR) status as well as HER 2 and Ki67 were performed. OS was quantified by Kaplan-Meier estimates and SMR was calculated based on mortality rate among patients relative to the mortality rate in the general population., Results: Male breast cancer was more often of ductal type, grade II and a very high proportion were ER and AR positive and HER2 negative. Intrinsic subtypes based on immunohistochemical evaluation showed luminal subtype. Ki67 ratio increased over period of study. OS declined by increased age, bigger tumor size, positive lymph node status, higher grade and Luminal B subtype. Hazard ratio and relative risk of SMR were highest for patients aged < 60 years., Conclusion: Male breast cancer is of luminal subtype, but more often Luminal B. Ki67 is crucial in evaluation of subtypes by immunohistochemistry, but have limitations. Subtyping seems to be of major importance. AR also can have a role in future treatment.

Background: Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is the least common but most malignant thyroid cancer. We aimed to examine the characteristics as well as evaluate the incidence, prognostic factors, and if introduction of a fast track cancer program might influence survival in a cohort of ATC patients., Methods: A cohort study based on prospective data from the national Danish thyroid cancer database DATHYRCA and the national Danish Pathology Register including 219 patients diagnosed from 1996 to 2012, whom were followed until death or through September 2014., Results: We found the median age in the 7th decade, the majority of patients being women presenting with a growing mass at the neck, diagnosed with stage T4b disease. At diagnosis, 56% of the patients had lymph node metastasis and 38% distant metastasis. We observed one- and five-year survival of 20.7% and 11.0%, respectively. Both univariate and multivariate analyses showed age (above 73.6 years), respiratory impairment, T4b stage, and distant metastasis at diagnosis to be significant prognostic factors. Further, introduction of a national fast track cancer program increased survival nearly two-fold., Conclusion: As new information, our study adds "respiratory impairment at diagnosis" and "introduction of a national fast track cancer program" to the list of already established prognostic indicators for ATC., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd.
