The article discusses the repercussions of the 18th-century theological and philosophical debate about faith and reason known as the Fragmentenstreit for the intellectual circle around the salon of Christiana Sophia Louise and Margarete Elisabeth Reimarus, also known as Sophie and Elise, respectively, in Hamburg, Germany, in the 1770s and early 1780s. The author relates the anonymous publication of fragmentary writings by Elise's father, Hermann Samuel Reimarus, in a periodical edited by German Enlightenment philosopher and playwright Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, which espoused a rationalist theology and triggered the Fragmentenstreit. She also considers a similar debate in Denmark triggered by the publication of the epic poem "Olavides" by Sophie's brother, August Hennings.
