This paper assesses the mortality dynamics of the populations of the CSFR, CR and SR from 1950 to 1985 using medical demography techniques and secondary analyses of primary demographic data. Major diseases focussed on include malignant neoplasms and circulatory diseases in adult and pediatric populations. Attention is drawn to risk population groups and predictions are made using a number of statistical methods. The model POPUL is then used to simulate population development given the elimination of causes of mortality. This approach can be used to monitor the mortality dynamics at the level of the population and the model method can be further supplemented with single tests, selective surveys and epidemiological methods. The outcome of this research is a proposed research institute and graduate programme to furnish a body of expertise in the CSFR to pay long term attention to and research on the health status and mortality in this region.

The authors presented a taxonomic survey of dermatophytes of the genus Microsporum. From the 19 species described so far, they isolated ten species in the region of Eastern Bohemia. Only the species Microsporum cookel and M. gypsem are considered to be endemic species. The remaining are regarded as imported dermatophytes which are not able to maintain their existence permanently in the conditions of the mentioned region. Data on the findings of the individual species were completed by the authors' remarks on their primary hosts and/or substrates of heterotrophy, frequency of occurrence and geographical distribution.

In December 1973 a technician was accidentally irradiated when attempting to bring under control a sealed 60Co source (110 TBq) which had been lodged in the head of a medical irradiation unit during a replacement operation. In the early period after the accident, severe skin changes on the left hand, epilation in a small area of the left temporal region and minor deviations in peripheral blood developed. In the following years, repeated surgery due to secondary skin defects of the left hand resulted in the loss of the fingers 2-5. Since 1975, changes in the lens of the left eye began to appear leading gradually to the deterioration of visual acuity. Later, opacities of the lens of the right eye were found. The patient's psychological and emotional attitude about the accident changed in the course of time. The factors influencing the psychic state of the patient are identified.

The authors described a dermal lesion in seven antelopes of the species Boselaphus tragocamelus (Pallas 1776), kept in a zoo-park. Mycological examination revealed the dermatophyte Trichophyton mentagrophytes (Robin) Blanchard 1896 as the causative agent of the lesion. The clinical picture of the dermatophytosis was manifested by a non-inflammatory desquamation of the epidermis with focal hair shedding. The lesions, mostly localized on the heads of the animals affected, were successfully treated with local antimycotics and by oral administration of griseofulvin. The authors present a list of the species of Artiodactyla in which Trichophyton mentagrophytes has been found until the present time. They draw attention to the fact that in wild animals the dermatophyte mostly causes symptomless disease.
