Within a short time, the Greek Revolt of 1821 deeply affected the island of Cyprus. Unlike in the other islands, the rebellion on Cyprus was over before it started owing to the severe measures taken against the rebels by Governor Mehmed Agha, who requested an edict from the sultan listing the names of prominent Greeks to execute. Many Greeks left the island for fear of execution, but some could not. According to Ottoman documents, there were 98 proscribed Cypriots, of whom 75 were executed; the other 23 escaped. In accordance with Ottoman law, the properties of the executed or escaped were first confiscated and then auctioned, with the proceeds transferred to the Public Treasury. But most of the executed or escaped Greeks were not wealthy, and claims by European consuls on the proceeds from the confiscated goods continued for many years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines Cyprus Leper Farm founded at the end of the 1820s or beginning of the 1830s between 1878 and 1955 during the British Period. Britain took over Cyprus with the agreement of the Ottoman government in 1878. Since beginning of the colonial period many improvements were carried out on health systems. British administration in Cyprus enacted two laws dated 1891 and 1929 regarding leprosy. The laws regulated the management of the Farm, and the Chief Medical Officer appointed by the Government. The British Government in Cyprus aimed to decrease the population of the Farm, and to treat the patients, and so provided it with suitable conditions such as bread, water, washing, a church and a mosque. The British administration succeeded in fighting with leprosy. After the remedial treatment of leprosy, the Cyprus Leper Farm was closed in 1955. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the early ages humans preferred to settle at places with warm climate and clean water supplies. Therefore, both economically and nutritionally, fisheries had a significant impact on human lives. As an island, fisheries have an important role on the civilizations founded on Cyprus Island. Fisheries have also been a significant portion of financial proceedings for Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), which is one of the two countries established on the Cyprus Island (9.251 km²) that is located at the eastern part of the Mediterranean Basin and is the biggest island of this region. The resources of countries that are founded on islands are typically limited, therefore for the most efficient usage of the existing resources fisheries are coming forward as an economic activity in TRNC. Additionally, wars and political disagreements in the history caused difficulties in fisheries as well as many other sectors. In this study we examined the fisheries of TRNC, which borders the half of the coastal region (50.6%) of the island, since its establishment and we proposed possible resolutions for existing problems. We collected data from the officials and individuals that are working in fisheries in order to address the issues of this sector and to understand the current situation of fisheries. Unfortunately, our literature surveys revealed a huge lack of scientific studies on this sector. For better understanding of the current sea food potential and its production; we compared our data with South Cyprus. We are encouraged by the lack of a comprehensive study on the fisheries of the TRNC and we hope that our study will help us on the improvements and policies of the fisheries in our country. Synopsis: North Cyprus is one of the destinations of women from Eastern Europe seeking economic opportunities abroad as sex workers. This paper, adopting a ‘labour’ approach to migrant sex work, focuses on working conditions in nightclubs and pubs. We examine the effects of laws governing immigration to North Cyprus and furnishing the regulatory framework for ‘entertainment’ establishments. Our research involved data from the relevant government offices; newspaper reports; and interviews with a member of the House of Representatives, a nightclub owner and a sample of 16 women working in the industry. Our principal finding is the contradiction of an official policy that on the one hand rules prostitution in nightclubs and pubs illegal while on the other submits the women in question to punitive regulations that implicitly acknowledge their engagement in sex work and enable tax revenue from their earnings, while failing to protect their interests and rights.
