The objective of this work is to examine the validity of an analytical division between the construct of entrepreneurial behavioral and other organizational abilities, as a factor for explaining organizational performance. The article presents the construct of entrepreneurial behavior, in an approach that integrates the elements of initiative, innovation and behavior of the firm, based on the opportunities presented. Next, the explanations of the area of entrepreneurialism and strategy for the heterogeneity of performance are theoretically contrasted, and three research hypotheses developed. To test the hypotheses, a model of structural equations was proposed to evaluate the relationship between entrepreneurial behavior and functional organizational abilities, and the influence of these elements on variations in performance among small companies. The study was developed based on the application of a survey involving 130 small retailers in the clothing sector, in the central region of the city of Curitiba, PR. The results of the study suggest a positive influence of entrepreneurial behavior and organizational abilities strategic performance, as well as a causal relationship and a need for a hierarchical division between functional abilities and entrepreneurial behavior.
