The article discusses a visit to Cuba by Pope Benedict XVI, head of the Roman Catholic Church, in March 2012, examining the role of the church in Cuba. The article examines how Raúl Castro, brother of Cuban leader Fidel Castro and the country's President, is decommunizing sectors of the economy, allowing Cubans to buy personal real estate and increasing the private sector. The article examines historical relations between the Cuban government and the church, looking at the role of the church in education, community organization, and microlending.
