The fall armyworm Spodotera frugiperda (Smith) (Lepidoptera:Noctuidae) constitutes the most important pest of corn in Cuba, which causes considerable reduction of the yields. This investigation was developed at the farmer´s sector in Fomento municipality, Sancti Spíritus province from April to December of the year 2008, with the objective of diagnosing the behaviour of the Spodotera frugiperda population and evaluates the corn-pumpkin polyculture cropping system, as well as its influence on the economic results. The Spodotera frugiperda attack started in the crop in the first ten days after the germination. Sopimpa, Agabama and Jíquimas were the most affected areas in this cycle. The biggest affectation of the insect occurred 45 days after germination, closely related with the temperature and the plantation age. In the polyculture cropping system variant, Spodotera frugiperda reached lower infestation levels than in the monoculture system, so the first one was more economical due to a better use of the ground indicator with values between: 1.14 and 1.16.
